I am slowly turning into a vegan :) My girlfriend and a friend came here to eat some late night dinner around 8pm. I reserved my seats in yelp for 3 people, but surprisingly enough they do not dine-in anymore because of the COVID lockdown that is going on in recent times :/ However, we get to order our food for to-go and seat on their chairs outside. The employees are accommodating and provide us some seats on their curbside, so that was cool :) The place from the inside when we ordered looks like a modernize cafeteria joint and their outside looks flashy with neon lightings to attract their customers. I love how they advertised themselves and a great way to promote vegan food in the community. I ordered their Chicken Mole Burrito and damn that was soooooo gooood! Yeah it says chicken, but in vegan terms that's considered some soy/tofu substitute. However, it does taste like chicken and I am completely mind blown lol. Their mole is outstanding, which is a subtle taste of sweetness and chili on it; it is just a perfect blend of that Mexican chocolate sauce. They have shitake mushroom, cabbages, and spinach in my mole burrito, as well. The combination of these vegetables makes it look like eating an actual meat. The sides are Spanish rice and black beans; a great complimentary with this mole burrito. Lastly, I ordered their bottle mango kombucha to soften the blow of all these flavors. I would say vegan restaurants have the best sauces..no doubt about it! Overall, I love this place; it is simple, affordable, and have delicious grub.. I wasn't expecting everything I experienced here. The cashier was so nice and pleasant to talk to and ask questions bout the menu. He was knowledgeable about what's popular with customers and helped me narrow it down to a breakfast burrito. The latte came out first and very quickly. He took the time to make the cutest design on it and it was the perfect amount of sweetness. Just a touch. I had to take a picture with the beautiful Christmas Tree in the background. That with the Christmas music in the background is definitely setting a great vibe for my day. The orange juice and meal came out quickly as well. The orange juice is so good and so worth it. It's made fresh in house and comes out very creamy. Not something I expect from an orange juice. It was delicious but then came the breakfast burrito. I am vegan which why i picked this place. This isn't my neighborhood and went to the first vegan spot that showed up. You can tell when a restaurant that serves vegan food has a Chef or owner that eats vegan food because they know where to get their ingredients and the food is so delicious. This is one of those places which is why i have to give it the best review possible. These restaurants are far and few between and i want it to stay forever because it is so delicious. We got the huevos rancheros, veggie omelet, and a slice of the carrot cake, which all came out to around $35, which was super worth it. I usually don't enjoy tofu scrambles because restaurants just don't do a good job making it but The Grain Cafe did an amazing job. There is a lot of flavor and everything is well balanced. The ranchero sauce in the huevos rancheros was probably the game changer for me in terms of actually enjoying a tofu scramble. Additionally, it was a well balanced meal with the corn tortilla, tofu in ranchero sauce, avocado, black beans, and tortilla chips. The carrot cake was also good. It reminded us of the nonvegan carrot cake from our childhood. They did a solid job with the icing as well as the cake itself being fresh in taste through the carrot and cinnamon. I was also impressed with their cake collection. They have outdoor dining with 4 tables of 2 seats, so a max of 6 people, spaced apart well. No public bathroom/restroom available at this time. We ordered the Grain Pancakes 3/5, one of the pancakes was undercooked, the Club Sandwich 5/5 by far our favorite dish, the Patty Crepe 2/5 too much aioli (tasted like a lot of mayo) and finally the Chorizo Tofu 4/5 very tasty but could've used cheese. The grain pancakes came with sausage which was ok. Overall, I like this place enough to come back and try what's on the dinner menu. I'm intrigued enough from the yummy sandwich and chorizo tofu to try more. I typically don't like tofu scrambles but the chorizo made this more flavorful and the texture was not weird. The grain cafe is a much needed restaurant in the Long Beach area - walk right in and you don't even have to think about what may or may not have animal flesh and fluid because nothing there does - it's hard to choose with so many options! I had the mint lemonade- good taste but so tangy it makes your eye go down. I wouldn't choose it again. I also had the breakfast burrito - the first time I've ever had a spinach tortilla on a breakfast burrito so looks were interesting but taste was . The hot sauce is very hot so I skipped that after one bite but the ketchup is organic, vegan, and refrigerated - a nice change up from the crusty months old bottles that typically line diner tables. I've been to the LA location so I thought I'd come and try the one here in Long Beach since I was nearby. Food and service was still great the only difference there is the location is a bit smaller. Food came out quickly! Wet burrito was delicious couldn't decide whether to do red or green salsa so I did both ! My girlfriend got the pozole , it was really good ! The staff are always nice and the wait time is very reasonable. During the week for lunch they have daily menu too.
