Such an amazing hole in the wall restaurant! It reminded us very much of our time in Japan. A small little place owned by Toshi who also runs the place by himself. He was so friendly and because it was just my boyfriend and me in there, we ended up talking with Toshi for well over an hour. So if you want speedy service on a slow night, don't count on it but he makes up for it in amazing sushi and great conversation. The fish he used was so fresh along with all the veggies that were crisp. We got 4 different rolls: spicy tuna, yellowtail, Toshi roll, and the Eel and Avocado and literally all of them were a hit. The miso soup was some of the best I've ever had and he even surprised us with his own little creation with the leftover spicy tuna so he didn't have to waste it. I will definitely be returning and bringing friends, I could not recommend this place more. Unless you want water or hot tea, you'll need to go next door for some drinks but we will always be down with BYOB lol. Lastly, for everything we got, the total was very doable and reasonable. We love Toshi Sushi!

Toshi is a real gentleman!! He treated us with a jalapeño roll which was the bomb ! The dragon roll was fire as well..! I recommend this place

Small place with interesting, eclectic wall decorations. The house salad is big and comes with fried onion strings, yum! I picked out every last one. The service is great and prices are fair. I really liked Toshi's Wrap roll. There's no rice, instead extra imitation crab meat and cucumber slices in place of the seaweed. Plus TWO tempura shrimp pieces per roll! I loved the stronger shrimp and crabmeat taste. Their sushi has big pieces of fish. Don't judge a place by it's cover and I'm guessing you'll enjoy a visit here.

This is your neighborhood sushi spot. Don't expect high end sushi but this place has all the staples - everything from nigiri, sashimi, hand rolls, to specialty rolls doused in teriyaki sauce or spicy mayo if that's your thing. This place is really close to our house so my husband and I have stopped by twice on a week night just to get our quick sushi fix. The latest time we came was a Tuesday so the restaurant was fairly empty. The chef came by to talk to us since we were the only ones there towards the end of the night. He's really friendly and is actually from Japan. We recently visited Japan in April so we had a nice conversation with him about that. The quality of the sushi isn't too bad but they could work on their service. Their food is very slow to come out and the young waitress working that night clearly seemed confused / flustered. That's our only complaint so far - will probably be back again soon since the location is convenient and the owner seems nice.

After my twins graduated, we headed out for our fave AYCE sushi place, but they were packed. Called Toshi and they said they had space for our party of 10, and we were all SUPER happy to have found out about this place! The dynamite roll is piled with succulent, scallops with the perfect amount of salt and sweet. I wabted to drink the sauce off the plate. The seaweed salad had three different types of salad, all yummy. Tempura served hot and crispy . Rolls were perfect balance of veg/fish/rice. Everything was great! Service was good. Tip: No liquor license, so bring your own beer & sake

Ok, so based on the reviews here I thought I found my new favorite sushi place in walking distance from home. When we walked into the place the first thing we both noticed was a stench of what must have been old cooking oil, just like a fast food restaurant. How can that even be in a SUSHI restaurant?! We didn't even sit down, turned right around and left. Luckily so, because the next sushi restaurant we tried, about 2 miles away, is a true gem in a rough neighborhood. read more

Cash only. Great job. My favorite is their baked scallops on California cut roll. I ask then to leave out the mayo sauce. No sauce and I get bursts of ocean goodness from little scallops. Very friendly, reasonable prices, great quality. A friend of mine is an attorney that works downtown but lives in the valley. He said that he brings clients to all of the famous, very expensive sushi places in west LA and nothing beats the small valley places like this one for quality and price. I agree wholeheartedly. read more

I want to add some credence and "is it really THAT good?" to these reviews. When you first walk into Toshi, you wince. It has the exact feel of a $4 beef bowl place. Blank walls, cheap wooden chairs and tables, and a sushi bar. I sat down, and within 2 minutes, I saw the server deliver an item to a table that had to have come from another restaurant. A HUGE roll, intricate, gorgeous, and it smelled incredible. The dichotomy between that roll and the surroundings was harsh, and it's what really sets the tone of the restaurant. Quick list of pros: amazingly fresh sushi, rather inexpensive, the servers are really nice and quite attentive. Also, the sushi chef and the server are both Latino - not sure where from. That's not really a pro, per se, but it's great if you speak Spanish, and I like seeing sushi chefs that aren't Japanese and Korean. Quick list of cons: there is zero ambiance. Just none. The chopsticks are the cheap-o, splinter-rific variety. The number of specialty rolls with anything interesting is small, and there's no alcohol. Other people mention the surroundings, and it's true - this place is in a strip mall in an eh part of town right next to a 7-Eleven. It's easily the best budget sushi restaurant, ever, anywhere. But I can't give it five stars. That doesn't mean I don't think it's a great place. You should check it out, 100%. It just didn't give me a need to come back. read more

I stopped in here starving and I can't believe I stumbled onto incredible sushi! The fish was INCREDIBLE- the perfect temperature (weird comment, I know, but most sushi fish is kept way too cold for good flavor) and so tender - really wonderful. This guy Toshi is super happy and humming while he works. Dig it. Will come back! read more

Average Sushi, not worth all the Hoopla and Exaggerated hype! I found the sushi rolls to be creative and very pretty. However, the food did not taste as good as the presentation. Super Ninja Roll (Spicy tuna roll topped with albacore and fried onions)-The onions had the most flavor. The roll looked spectacular. The taste was quite neutral almost bland, except for the onions. Russian Roulette Roll (Albacore Roll with one extra spicy seasoned cut sushi)-The Roll was very pretty looking. The taste was bland and not spicy at all. The extra spicy cut was just Hot, with no flavor. You can have Hot spices with flavor. And you can have sheer Heat! Which is not very pleasant or tasteful. Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll-Like the previous rolls mentioned above. The Tuna was very bland and lacked the right to be called Spicy. Service-Good Décor-A true hole in the wall. Ceiling tiles need replacement. Walls looked like the paint was just slapped on with no prep-work. Parking-Limited. Location small strip mall. read more

The nice presentation of the rolls and the prices are enough to give this place a couple stars, but unfortunately the fish wasn't fresh. Maybe we caught this place on a bad night as most of the reviews on here are 5 stars? We ordered the albacore sashimi and it was frozen. It had that icy crunch on almost every bite and a really strange taste. We also ordered another roll that had albacore on the inside, I believe it was the Russian roulette roll and it was so fatty it was inedible. I did like the creativity of only having one piece that was really spicy (Russian roulette), I've never seen that before! They were nice enough to remove that roll from our bill and gave us some hand rolls, but at that point we were already turned off. I wouldn't go back... read more

This is a new review for my once favorite sushi spot. Now under new management, I can only give this place an average rating compared to the old Toshi. I gave the new guys a chance but the quality and portions are not worth returning here. I only eat sushi about four times a month but when I do I expect it to be great. This place no longer does it for me. Good luck to the new owners. read more

Found this "hole in the wall" and it is amazing! Get the negative out of the way... it's small (28 seats ) the miso is on par with the best I have had! The fish is fresh and quality is noticed. The cuts are great (very well portion fish/rice)The rolls are full of flavor and appeal to the pallet as well as the eye! Over all the price is deserved as the quality is not cheap! I will definitely be returning!!! I would have included pics but I enjoyed them first sorry! read more

Food was good, service was great! We stopped in here on a whim and were surprised by the tasty food coming from such a modest location. I recommend the Russian Roulette roll, but you had better be ready for some serious spice if you pick 'the one'. On the cheaper side, the shrimp asparagus roll was really tasty. The sushi chef was very friendly and fun to talk with. read more

I am blown away, I came here for lunch on a quiet Saturday afternooon with my grandpa and we were the only patrons of the place...but this restaurant definitely exceeded my expectations. Like going out with a mediocre, balding guy, with a beer belly who turned out to have an extremely good personality and an awesome sense of humor!! - who would've thought you would get great quality sashimi (big generous chunks, I might add) in a strip mall in between a thai video rental place (surprisingly in business) and a thai restaurant. What I ordered: 1) Chirashi Bowl - really great fresh BIG pieces of tuna,salmon, yellowtail, salmon roe, shrimp over perfectly seasoned sushi rice. A+ on presentation the cucumbers were cut into chards of grass + and the shrimp was thoughtfully laid onto the sesame leaves. Definitely recommend this it was about 11 bucks or so! Great Value 2) Langostino Roll - YUMM this is an amp up version of your basic baked scallop roll but with chunks of lobster meat... *nom*.. and creamy mayo spicy sauce and half an avocdo sliced on top.. It definitely was worth the wait *TIP* remember to order this first thing as it may take a while to prepare Overall service was great, the two guys working here were generous.. when you walk in you see a mexican sushi chef, but do not be fooled, after talking to him he was trained for 7 years in Japan, and his passion and knowledge to preserving the art of sushi making is truly remarkable and refreshing for hole in the wall. I definitely recommend going here - take your date here - showing that you know good hidden gems, and that you arent pretentious. Save a little money along the way so you will have more for "dessert". read more

I placed a take out order and the person who took my call was super kind. I ordered 6 rolls and 1 hand roll for about $70. Not bad at all. The sushi was delicious & fresh. I loved the spicy tuna....melts in your mouth. The salmon baked roll and the Langostino roll were delicious, as well as the Fire roll. Everything was tasty. I will definitely be back! read more

I really enjoy coming here to eat. Always good. Service is always good as well. The only thing I want to bring up is that I noticed the Sushi Chef's helper does not really wash his hands well ( I mean like touching money, rinse his hands with water for a few seconds, and dry them with a paper towel.) and starts handling customers food, balling up wasabi etc. etc. I noticed a few different times. I do not want to distance myself from eating here. I hope that owner sees this review. read more

Sorry to all my other sushi spots but this is my new favorite. This place is so welcoming. We walked in and were greeted immediately. As we sat and looked at the menu they brought a roll for us to sample. Delicious! We ordered tuna sushi, salmon sushi, unagi, fire cracker roll, and a langostino roll. Wow! All of it was fresh, well prepared, beautifully presented, and delicious! And then for dessert they brought us fresh cut fruit. There is nothing I could find wrong with this place. Five star all the way. Thank you Toshi, I will be back soon. read more

Julio is a SUSHI GOD! I love him so much! This place looks sketchy on the outside but has the best sushi in all of LA (in my humble opinion). The service is beyond excellent! Cash only... Really good sushi, good service, easy and convenient to get to. I had the Firecracker roll to go and was happily surprised by the generous portion! And the price was on point $11. It was suppose to be spicy, but really wasn't for me, but that just may be my problem, since I love spicy food ;). The place is tucked away in a little plaza with a 7-11 on the corner, next to a Thai food place and a dry cleaners. I'll definitely be back for take-out. The restaurant was clean and simple, but a little too quiet for me. read more

The food is super good. Servings were big too. It was a shame that the service was kind of super slow. I feel like it was 2 men operating the entire restaurant, and only one of them was making anything sushi-related. Considering it's a sushi restaurant, and there was a super large take-out order of a bazillion sushi rolls ahead of us, you can imagine the kind of bottleneck they had. BUT BUT BUT, I'm all for really nice service with good food and reasonable prices so I didn't care as much about how long we waited. Maybe try take-out if you're in a rush? I feel like I'm making a big fuss about the wait haha. Other yelpers seemed to have zippy service so maybe it was just an off day. Let's focus back on the food, people! No qualms about the food. It's great! Go nom! TLDR: Be prepared for slower service (sometimes) but the food and pricing is worth it! read more

This is my first time at this place and i really cant say enough about how nice jose and julio were! Even we went in right before they close, they still greeted us with smiles and were happy to see customers, we went on a week day at night where most ppl are getting ready for bed. I heard this place gets packed on peak hours. Anyway its one of the best sushi rolls i ever had, and im comparing it not just locally but internationally as ive been to several sushi bars in different countries. The fish is really fresh!! They buy it daily and dont store it which makes their sushi light and tastey. Your are getting high quality rolls for quarter the price. Lol i swear i dont work for them, but their sushi and nice treatment made my Tuesday which was a busy work day and i just needed this good food so bad. Trust me on this one! read more

U will not last... Bring back Julio & Jose or you will be done. I tried 3 times after they left.. All I know is quality is KING when it comes to food.. U don't have quality.. And at least u can say sorry when u serve bad sushi.. These were for the owners to read if they even care.. Was a regular here at least 3 times a month.. Now I need a new sushi place read more

Delicious, fresh and friendly. I love this restaurant. In fact, I haven't ordered sushi at any other restaurant in ages. If I want sushi I am definitely going to Tashi. I work right next to Toshi so I come here a lot! Julio, the sushi chef, is very welcoming and the sushi is always good. I love the Lily Roll! It's not on the menu but you can order it. It's in a small shopping plaza and it's right next to 7-11p. With that being said, it's not exactly a place you would take a date. But 4 stars on Yelp means "Yay! I'm a fan" and I am definitely a fan. Very good prices too! PS... doesn't serve alcohol and cash only read more

I have only eaten here once so I can't say that I have a lot of experience with the menu, but my one trip really left a lasting impression with me. I love how the restaurant isn't pretentious, the hole I'm the wall vibe makes this place unique. The fish was fresh, the rolls beautiful, and the service was attentive. I have to say Toshi Sushi is the place to go eat sushi, I personally recommend this place. Everything is fresh . It may have just one downside, which is all cash and no alcohol , but other than that this is a great place for sushi. read more

Never been disappointed here! Sushi is SOO good, portions are good & prices are awesome. It has as much ambiance as the 7-11 it's next to. BYOB!! Just be discreet. UPDATED: They have updated the decor in the place & I think toned down the lights! It's not like the 7-11 anymore. Last time I went there were quite a few Asian diners there, so you KNOW it's good ;) read more

Don't let the strip mall under estimated appearance for you. This is a Beverly Hills quality sushi restaurant with Van Nuys prices. I feel guilty just leaving this review because I don't want people to discover it. But at the same time he deserves to be supported as this is the best sushi around. We are so lucky to have discovered this place and enjoyed it for the past couple years. It's the best date night around. read more

If it was bad before now let's sadly even worse. Don't know if they sold it, but now it's a one person operation. Rolls came out falling apart, and not as the description said. Food is mediocre. The fish is not fresh. Order eel hand roll , the seaweed is mushy. The place is kind of dirty, the menu and table is sticky. I should have left when I saw the chef is Latino. It is not a good sign. The only positive thing is the food potion is reasonable. read more
