Tried this place for the first time two weeks ago. The sushi chef and server were awesome and super attentive. The sashimi was fresh, cut big, and served beautifully. My party of five (3 kiddies and 2 adults) felt at home, and it was much appreciated. We got to talking and turns out they've not been there about 10 months or so. Hope they stick around. They're really close to us, fresh, have good service, and the prices are not bad. Small spot, but I've found that these humble little hole in the walls make me happier than fancy, flashy joints with big names do. We will definitely be back. read more

Back when Toshi was on Ventura in the hole in the wall next to the motel this was the best sushi in the valley. Then he closed and I had to find some place else to feed my craving. It turns out Toshi didn't close, he just moved and it only took me 2 years to learn that :( When (not if) you go see Toshi, sit at the small, 4 person bar, and let him feed you whatever he wants. The place is a divey hole in the wall that gets an A and has fantastic fish. The one bummer thing about the new location is you need to bring your own beer as he doesn't have a liquor license. read more

Place is little outdated Needs a good cleaning I'm sorry but won't stop me from coming back though especially because of that garlic shrimp dish everyone keeps mentioning bomb! I cannot say enough great things about Toshi Sushi or about Toshi. I have been going to Toshi Sushi for years now, even when it was at a different location in Sherman Oaks. I was never one to eat sushi prior to going to Toshi, and even now I don't eat it elsewhere. My favorite is the sashimi salad, I just leave it to Toshi's discretion. Toshi even makes gluten free tempura for my husband. Toshi is a wonderful sushi chef and a kind, charming person. It's always a fantastic experience dining there! read more

I came here with a friend after discovering it on yelp with good reviews. The sushi is good. The fish are fresh. Especially the yellowtail that we got. The customer service is great. The guys were friendly and were open to feedback on the spot. The only downside is the location and how small this joint is. It's nothing fancy at all compared to where I go for sushi. Not a place where you can bring a date. I would go back again though to try more of their rolls. read more

This is by far the best little sushi spot in the valley. Toshi is a sushi master and I'm pretty sure he's secretly a superhero. He usually runs the spot on his own and is usually running back and forth between the back kitchen and the front where he makes the fresh sushi. In the past few weeks I placed 2 large orders to feed my family of 10 and he has exceeded our expectations. Another wonderful evening at Toshi last night. I was there with a small group, and we ordered 3 rolls (Hawaiian, Toshi roll, and an off menu roll), the heart attack appetizer, and our very favorite crispy rice with spicy tuna. Why does this place have 4 1/2 stars? I only came here because it was rated so highly and I've never been more betrayed by yelp. My friend and I came in to an empty restaurant and walked past the server as he was cleaning up a table and sat down. He finished up and walked right past us, not even acknowledging us. He walked to the back of the restaurant and into the kitchen and then returned several minutes later with menus and asked for our drinks. Weird. I saw a piece of paper taped to the wall with "Today's Special" and it was Toro. We ordered that and they said they were out. The sign could be taken down, you know? I asked for a custom yellowtail cutroll with avocado and cucumber and I was told no by both the server and the chef. I was taken aback! What do you mean no? They told me they don't have avocado. What kind of place doesn't have avocado?? I then look at the menu and see avocado is an ingredient in multiple rolls and point this out to them and ask why they can't make my roll? While the server is still telling me no the chef looks at me like he got busted and reluctantly tells me ok but avocado is extra. I was annoyed at this time and wanted to leave but I was so hungry I decided to stick around. The fish isn't fresh. Its not bad but its not fresh either. Also many slices weren't cut all the way so I had to rip the tuna in my chirashi bowl apart by hand. The prices aren't cheap either. You go to tiny places for great sushi and smaller bills. Lunch for 2 people cost $46. Ridiculous. This place's food matches the ugly interior. I won't return and I DO NOT recommend! read more

Came in here the other week with my significant other and were very disappointed. We sat down and werent spoken to or even greeted for 15 mins. We were handed a menu by a server and that was all. He didnt speak to us to say hello, or tell he was going to disappear for 15 mins. We knew what we already wanted to order so we were just waiting around doing nothing. Hands down this has been my worst dining out experience since I joined yelp. I only went because it had seemingly good reviews, but when I get there I sat myself and was seated for about 20 minutes before someone took my order. After placing my order, it took another 20 minutes before I saw a waiter and had to request for water. By this point I was highly agitated. 10 minutes later my food is done. Rather than serving me on a plate they hand me a to go box. I tell the guy who's attempting to hand me the to go box that my order was dine-in, and he proceeds to feed me some excuse. So I tell them that my experience at their restaurant has been horrible and that I would be remiss if I stayed there to eat it. So I pay for my sushi and leave. I get home bite into my sushi. The Tiger roll wasn't bad (wasn't great either), and they didn't cut it all the way through. So when you took one piece, the rest of the roll came with it. The spicy tuna roll was bland and tasteless. I'm pretty sure I could've bought a better spicy tuna from the frozen food aisle at Ralph's. Overall, I was thoroughly disappointed. Save your TIME and your money. Learn from my mistakes and eat sushi somewhere else. This place sucked. If I could give it a 0/5 I would. I definitely would not recommend to a friend. read more

I was initially surprised to go to my favorite sushi spot and not see Julio. But I stayed to give the place a try. I searched frantically for my beloved Kinta roll and alas, it was gone. I asked the owner and he politely offered to make me a spicy tuna roll instead. I was really grateful that he at least made an attempt to give me a different roll. I can't speak about the owner in a particularly negative way, since he tried to cater to me (and I did ask for an off menu item). Of course, we can't possibly compare the new chef to Julio and Jose--that would be unfair. I really wanted to give this place a try again, but the roll was just...ordinary. It was also a little messy (presentation wise). Also, the quality of fish (I felt) wasn't as fresh. It wasn't a horrible experience, it just wasn't amazing or good enough to make me want to return to Toshi. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be coming back. Wha? We walked in tonight, so looking forward to seeing Julio and Jose, and indulging in that delectable spicy yellowtail roll. "Spicy. Yellowtail. Roll," Julio would tease me, holding up the fish (I would sometimes accidentally order tuna. But that was good, too!) Instead, we sat down, with NO ONE ELSE IN THE RESTAURANT, except a woman talking it up as if she were a plant. We waited 15 minutes without a greeting. We then got up and left. The prices have doubled. The atmosphere is totally jacked. The owner, chef, whoever he is, ran around on his tiptoes doing whatever, totally ignoring us, acting super busy with no one to serve. It was just weird. We don't know whether the food sucks or not. We never got served, and we couldn't afford it anyway. Goodbye Toshi Sushi! We miss Julio and Jose and habañero dragon roll! This is a spinoff of a shop in the more hoity-toity Sherman Oaks. The original Toshi, if you will. The thing that makes this place crazy, is that the chef is a Japanese trained sushi chef that speaks fluent Japanese, has a Japanese family and just happens to be Latin American. So cool. I spent a fantastic afternoon sharing some anecdotes of Japan with him (caveat: I've never been, so I am charmed by the tales). Whilst gnoshing on teriyaki chicken and some really outstanding spicy tuna. It's in a small complex and, as many have mentioned, very little style points. And was curious how a sushi restaurant would fare this far north of Victory (by that, I mean a block). But I'm glad others have gotten a chance to experience it. Atmosphere seriously leaves something to be desired - no matter how great the sushi was, I wouldn't be happy eating there because of that alone. Also, cash only. Sushi in NOHO....ummm I dunno. That's pretty much how the convo went. All joking aside I didn't expect to find a decent sushi spot in this neck of the woods. But this place exceeded my expectations (granted they were pretty low). Fresh fish, clean, and friendly staff. We ordered the sashimi plate lunch special (salmon was the best tasting one) and substituted the rice and miso soup for cucumber salad. The ninja roll and the rainbow roll (no rice) -I'm on that summer is around the corner diet. The rolls are not packed or on the big side. But at least the fish tasted fresh and not fishy.
