Not sure what happened to this place. Over the past year or so we (our office staff went here often) have had great experiences. The super ninja roll was always awesome and so was the yellow tail tartare. Every sushi item we ordered was great! Walked in today and they slapped some new paint on the walls, changed the seating arrangement and the recipes. The super ninja roll is no longer super and the yellow tail tartare tasted like a tuna salad sandwich that went bad (had to throw away the roll it was that bad). And the prices on a couple items went up. This was a hole in the wall that used to be a homerun........now it is just a hole in the wall. New staff, new recipes but unfortunately this took a turn for the worst. Will NOT go back. read more

One of the best sushi places I have been to. You will not regret it the prices are very good and the service is one of the best Julio and Jose were very nice funny guys. Quick service. Very good sushi for a great price. Even my wife said the place didn't look like it was going to be good but guess I shouldnt judge just because of its cover. WARNING!! This is under new management and what was once the BEST sushi in L.A. had become mediocre and over priced:( Julio and Jose were amazing, and always surpassed our expectations. Not only was it divine it was beautiful. When we went in today the owner explained he was there now, and things were different. Oh we're they!! WOW! This is my new favorite sushi place! It is a little hole in the wall, but it's a gem! The fish is incredibly fresh. They buy it every morning and it is prepared with love. Julio (manager/server) is the kindest man I have ever encountered in the restaurant industry. He took such good care of us, asked us if we had allergies, and accommodated my gluten allergy with leaving off the eel sauce and offered us Tamari (gluten-free soy sauce). The rolls were amazing, and the portions were very good. The prices are very affordable. I will be back (probably this week!). It wasn't too busy in there which was nice, but I hope they get very busy and stay open a long time. read more

We'd give it six if we could. This hidden gem seated two doors down from a 7-11 is north hollywood's answer to reasonably priced DELICIOUS sushi. The rolls were cold, a major plus in our book, and did I mention... huge! Also the owner and sushi chef were friendly and attentive, especially since the table next to us had about 20 changes to make to each roll they were ordering. Finally, whatever you do order the baked scallop on California roll... It's just the right temperature in all the right places, and is beautiful to boot! read more

I went to Toshi to grab takeout. The service was great and the guys were really friendly. They made my rolls on the spot and gladly gave me the extra pickled ginger I requested. This guy is super sweet and an amazing sushi chef! This place really is a hidden gem. It is in this random ghetto stripmall where you would not expect amazing sushi. Everything is clean and tastes great. I don't want to say it is fresh because I learned from a documentary that apparently fresh isn't actually better--it's the cut of the fish... so I'm going to guess the cuts he picks are very good? I don't understand what everyone is raving about on yelp. I just had frozen yellow tail - very fishy salmon and the Russian roll reminded me of something my friend used to make and his not even a sushi chef. It's priced high for what they are selling. Ate here twice because I wanted to give it a second chance because it's so close to my house. The other reviews don't make sense to me because this place isn't that cheap. But the quality is. The fish isn't good quality and one of the rolls I tried (tempura roll) I had to spit out because it was disgusting. It was a hot roll with raw fish on top. I give them 2 stars for trying their best to pass this place as a sushi restaurant. How can you all call this place the best sushi in town? I had the sashimi plate. The fish wasnt fresh at all. The albacore literally was disintegrating on my plate. The sushi rice was interesting. The rice was not properly flavor. It's like they forgot to put in the rice vinegar. I still cant believe this place has 4 and a 1/2 stars on yelp. I was fooled by the high rating on yelp to come here. I mean the hispanic sushiman was also the cashier! It's just nuts! For the $20 i spent, i could've went to Sugarfish and had a proper sushi lunch. One good thing about this place is that it's next to 7-eleven. After having my baby and craving sushi throughout my entire pregnancy, my husband went to pick up sushi from our favorite spot (and guys) for me and was shocked to see they weren't there. He ordered anyway because he didn't want to come home empty handed and it was a huge disappointment. We are so sad Jose and Julio aren't there anymore. Now we need to find another good local spot and I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist. read more

I love Sushi by Toshi! The owner is a lovely man & the sushi is delicious! It's kind of hidden & small so the atmosphere is very relaxed. I've tried many of their specialty rolls and I haven't found one I don't love. If you want to frequent amazing local businesses, this place is my first choice in NOHO. I'm looking at the other reviews and it's obviously many people share my same experiences with Toshi. It's hard to explain how kind he is... you just need to experience it for yourself :) read more

I was really excited when I saw all the good reviews on this sushi place near my house. And then I was really confused by how little my experience had in common with the reviews. I wondered if I was at the same restaurant and had to confirm it. The food here is cheap. I don't just mean in price: I mean in quality as well. That's not something you want with sushi, generally. I just got a california roll and a spicy tuna roll because they're so hard to mess up, but they tasted like sushi you'd get from the grocery store. I didn't even finish it, and I love sushi. Don't get this place confused with the other Sushi joints called Toshi. This one is in a strip mall on Vanowen. Yeah, you heard me, I went to a Sushi place on Vanowen in the deep Valley, in a strip mall, that doesn't take credit cards. Don't stop reading I promise you. My son and his girlfriend would not shut up about this place, so I finally went. Now most kids don't really know about Sushi, but Chaz has been eating sushi all along Ventura Boulevard since before he was potty trained. So, I took a chance on a late lunch with him during the week. We walked into Toshi and there are two guys working the whole place. One at the bar, and another front of house and the kitchen. These guys really were slammed, cause there were people there and they were eating a ton of this yummy fish that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Let me add, that all along these two dudes never lost their patience or missed a beat. We waited, and it was worth it. We tried a little of everything. Rolls are rolls, but these were pretty good. We can't tolerate mayo, and they were able to accommodate. Not like some of those snobs that won't carry change their spicy tuna because it's not part of their vision. We had a few orders of Sushi, and than moved onto some sashimi. The fish could not have been fresher, and the cuts were generous and tender. The rice had a good balance and provided a good delivery system for these pieces of fish. And they had a selection of things that we like to try. Now, you need to bring cash, but not a ton. And they don't have a liquor license, so there is no beer and Sake. Didn't ask if we could bring our own. But who needs that at lunch. They had great green tea and a full array of soft drinks. Just moved to the neighborhood and was looking for a new sushi spot. This place is great! I don't mind the esthetics of a restaurant. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, anyway. As long as they are clean and the food is good, I'm good. And they are clean, and the food is delicious! The fish quality is great! And the rice, perfect! The sushi chef, Julio, is not just some schmo they hired to be behind the bar. He actually lived in Japan and trained to make sushi there, and it shows in the food. And he was so friendly! Fresh sushi and pretty authentic. They don't offer your typical American rolls, they only have churashi, hand rolls, sashimi, and nigiri.
