Best hole-in-the wall sushi in the valley! Toshi is located in, well, I'll use another reviewer's word because it really fits, "sketchy" strip mall. However, we read great reviews of the place, so we decided to brave it. So glad we did. It's small and tidy. Julio and Jose greeted us right away. And we got to business pronto. We started with the salmon sashimi. As you can see from the photo, we were served huge pieces. Ridiculous portion for the price. Then we went for the rolls: Super ninja, baked scallop over California roll, and the shrimp tempura roll. All were, again, huge portions and delicious. This does not have the highest quality sushi, nor is there any super sophisticated preparations with nuanced flavor profiles. This is tasty, good quality sushi, huge portions and low price (note: cash only). Plus a really warm neighborhood vibe and great service. I love all that. My family has been going to Toshi for over 10 years starting at his Encino location. I've started dining at his restaurant at a young age and even during my college years I craved Toshi's sushi whenever I was back at home. Kind of disappointed in myself that it took me this long to write a review. We are big sushi lovers! Toshi is an excellent place to go to for quality fish at an affordable, non pretentious price. My favorites are the Creamy Salmon Handroll, Yellowtail tar-tar roll, and the grilled yellowtail collar. He's often the only guy in-house during COVID times so be sure to order in advance, and be patient; you won't be disappointed since his sushi is so so yummy and the portions are generous. Let me preface this review by saying - I love sushi, and am happy spending $35 at All You Can Eat at Midori in the Valley, $30 at one of the countless quality spots on Ventura, or $150+ at a legit spot in Downtown. Informed by fellow Yelpers and always interested in locating my next "hole in the wall" favourite spot, I headed into NoHo to check out Toshi. My favourite thing about Toshi is the two staff members/owners. They are polite, terribly humble, and obviously take pride in their work and appreciate their customers. The portion sizes here are about 15-20% larger than other sushi places in the Valley within the rough price range. Their pricing is excellent value. The enormous "Super Ninja roll" I've posted a photo of was only $12. The quality of the fish on the rolls I had was good, but not excellent. You are NOT going to find Sugarfish quality fish here (I may be wrong as this was my first time, and it was later in the evening. Will head back in, sit at the sushi bar and ask for omakase next time and report back) There were only about 3-4 parties of patrons when I arrived for dinner but my food still took a while to come out. This is a lean operation, and whilst extremely diligent and efficient, there is only so much that a single server and a sushi chef can do in a set period of time. This didn't phase me, as they were so nice, but be aware in case you're in a rush. Cash only - once again, doesn't bother me - more power to 'em. The positive, humble nature of these guys and their friendly service reminds me a lot of Abraham, the owner at Deli Mex, my favourite little mom & pop Mexican food place just down the road on Magnolia in Van Nuys. Toshi is far from the prettiest place you'll ever eat good sushi (in fact, it's probably the most downright sparse, devoid of vibe joint you'll come across), but for the price, quality of food and service you'll receive - it's 100% worth it. This would usually be a 4 star review from me, but supporting the little guy really makes me happy, and seeing a small business working so hard and so damn well really does deserve that extra star. read more

Alas, I've found found it :) Don't let the location deter you from having some of the most delicious sushi I've ever had the pleasure of devouring. The staff is courteous and efficient. The fish is fresh and their dishes are very generously portioned (at least for now..). The sushi chef even brought over a complimentary roll for me and my friend to try (I posted it in the album). Also, I never thought green tea could be so outstanding that it required comment but it's seriously delicious here - is a beautiful opaque green color and has great flavor. The only downside is that the service is a tad slow, but I'm not downgrading my stars because the service is great and the people are friendly. This is a nice small hole in the wall place. The sushi is average so don't expect anything mind blowing for the prices you're paying. That being said, if you're in a rush or just need a quick fix, this one will do that job for you. I came in on an afternoon and was the only customer there. I was greeted by the chef (apparently the only person working there) and ushered to a table. The chef spoke broken English, which never bothered me. However, when the English becomes a bad service issue, that's when it starts affecting my perception of a particular place. Being the only customer in the shop at the time, I would have expected faster service for something as simple as a chirashi bowl (basically, sushi rice with slices of cut fish on top). I cringed when two more people walked in and the chef had to stop what he was doing just to greet the new customers. This would mean my simple order would take even longer considering the new restaurant guests would also have to be served water, have their order taken, etc. Having worked in sushi...I always worry about sushi places that don't have the sushi displayed in front of you. Maybe I'm biased....but I like to see how my fish looks like before and during the process in which they prepare the food considering it is raw. Don't expect to have that luxury here. I wanted to give it another chance since it was a half block away from where I was staying temporarily. But now that I've moved away from that neighborhood, I won't be going back. read more

It should be 2 1/2 but I decided to round up because maybe it was an off day. I came here on Sat, 02/14/15. Yes, it was Valentine's Day so I may have to do a re-review on a regular day. I was surprised to see the place needed to have tables bussed (like half of the tables). The place is really small so the mess just looked really bad especially since there is only 8 tables and 4 seats at the sushi bar. They had to push tables together to the 4 of us. By the time we sat and ordered, it was 7:45pm. Here's my order: - Salmon teriyaki bento box with spicy tuna roll. It comes with miso soup and salad. (Yummy!) - crunch roll (8 large pieces - yummy!) My family ordered bento boxes too. They were so slow that we didn't get our soup til 8:05pm (yup, 20 mins after we ordered.) and then I got my crunch roll 10 mins after. I felt bad for my family because they don't eat sushi even though this is cooked. Oh well! LOL I was so hungry. By the time, all of us got our food it was a little before 8:30pm. My family was not happy about that. Seriously, the only redeeming quality was that the food was good but they need to hire help. My mom told me the cook/chef in the kitchen was the one that bussed our table. When we left there were so many tables to bus while we were there and after. Sheesh! Live very nearby, but never carry cash so I have never stopped in. Finally went in for dinner and am really happy I did. It's a small cash only establishment in a strip mall. It's easy to miss if you're not looking hard enough. The inside seats probably 25-30 people tops. It's a comfortable dining room, nothing too fancy. The service was great. The place was slow when I was there, so they only had two people working. This wasn't at all a problem, as the service was really good. The sushi was really really good. We go all over the place trying new sushi joints and some of the best sushi I've had in the valley is right next to my place... Not mad at that. The tuna, salmon, eel, and shrimp/asparagus rolls were incredible. The rolls were a great size for the price, and they were all quite fresh and had great taste. Now I want to go back and try everything else they have to offer. Overall Toshi had great service, comfortable atmosphere, fair prices, and delicious Sushi. Toshi is located in a small strip mall snugged in between a 7-11, a Thai Book store, a Thai food place, and a donut shop. Don't let the location fool you, because it is most definitely worth trying the delicious Japanese cuisine offered in this establishment. We initially walked in and the lights were turned off, which i was very fond of, considering I am a green type of guy. Rosario, the waiter, turned them on for us and asked us to sit where ever we liked. The service and conversation there after, was great!. The sushi chef, Julio, has many years of experience working around and with fresh fish; it definitely shows in his work. His wife is Japanese, he speaks the language, and he even lived in Japan for 6 years, learning the art of sushi making. This guy is pretty much an honorary Japanese member. The decor is plain and simple, which does not bother me one bit. I'm sure as time goes by, they will start putting up some stuff on the walls. The fish quality is awesome; super fresh and tasty with generous sized portions. The rolls hold together very nicely, which is a huge plus in my book. Also, everything is fairly priced. Overall, this is going to be my new sushi spot that i will frequent and recommend to all my family, friends, and co-workers. This is what I love about Yelp! Wanted to meet a friend for lunch between point A and point B. We both love sushi. Found this place, high ratings on Yelp and met there. We arrived just as it opened so it was very warm when we first sat down, before the A/C kicked in. By the time we left, we were shivering! The service was a little unconventional. Things arrived, orders were taken but sometimes we had to get up and ask someone and weren't always sure who was attending to us. But the food was great! They have a lot of special rolls and they're so affordable. We spent about $30 for the two of us, very reasonable for a good sushi lunch. The presentation is fantastic! I think the roll I loved was the spicy dragon roll. It's worth reading the descriptions because I took the server's suggestion for the very popular ninja roll and didn't like it nearly as much. Not going to lie, we were very skeptical based on the appearance/location of this restaurant. Walked in and it was completely empty. We manned up and decided that based on other reviews it was worth trying. We later realized that was a total fluke because tables started filling up with hungry customers as we ate. The food was really good! and the sushi chef was really cool to talk to. My husband's favorite roll was the Yellowtail Tartare. My favorite was the Firecracker Roll. Normally don't prefer tempura on my roll, but this was was not too sweet. It was perfect. Everything we tried was portioned extremely well and priced lower than most places we usually visit. We are curious how the other two Toshi restaurants compare. Other customers were telling us that the portioning is not the same, and that this location has the best fish. Love Toshi's menu! We especially loved the diet friendly options with no-rice on the menu. Each roll was very delicious filled with fresh fish. The garlic edameme had a bit of a spice paste taste that complimented the edemame well. The miso soup was a great start with just the right amount of green onions and seaweed. He has had a couple restaurants but has since moved from Sherman Oaks to North Hollywood My first time coming here, my expectations were low. The decors and settings aren't the best, and Toshi was the only worker, but I came with an open mind and patience. As we started eating Toshi's sushi, I recognized that his sushi was unique. I saw the ingredients he put in it, but out of all the 'cheap' ingredients (not the fish), he created a master piece. I am an eel lover and he prepared it in a way that I have never tasted before. It blew my mind. I was intrigued and asked him questions. There I found out that he worked for Nobu and other high end restaurants, but wanted to part ways because he wanted to be his own chef. After what he told me I ordered some more of his sushi, and I can honestly say that, if he were to raise prices, he could prove himself to be the master that he says he is. He uses basic ingredients and has a small hole in the wall location; however, what he can do with the ingredients that he uses is already proof that he needs no other assistance to create a master piece. I love this place because of his humble ways and the tasting food. Thank goodness I did not judge the book by its cover when I decided to try a sushi place in North Hollywood.
