An absolutely delightful taqueria. Everything here is authentic, tasty and ample. My go to is the super quesadillas, super tostadas and , fish tacos and burritos. Their homemade salsa bar has generally 4-6 salsas, marinated vegetables( potatoes, carrots, jalapeños, onions etc) limes, radishes, cilantro, dried jalapeños and the best tasting home made chips. Their juice dispenser has horchata, cantaloupe, tamarind and 3 others. Grab your table a little before lunch time...it gets crowded. read more

This is for a delivery order made to this place through Doordash. I asked for a chicken burrito, and got it, except that it was, quite literally (for once), bursting at the seams, with salsa and everything just flowing out. I ended up having to use a spoon to eat the burrito. I asked for nachos with no cheese - with only guac and salsa, yet the what was delivered to me me was nachos loaded with cheese and no guacamole at all. Normally, if a condiment is missing or an additional one added, I still end up eating it. However, cheese, in particular, trigger migraines for me, and I have to strictly avoid any cheese, which means that whole box of nachos had to be thrown away - waste of food and money. read more

This places is better than the star rating suggests. It's a five star down to earth spot for good grub. The chimichanga has more than $11 of flavor and is huge. The people sitting next to me were eating a whole fish. I'm not sure what their dish is called, but it looks amazing! We stopped here during one of our breaks (soccer tournament). Don't expect to sit down and get waited on... You have to walk up to the counter and order your food. If you decide to eat there, they will bring your food to the table. The two young gals at the counter and serving were very nice and polite. Food was good. I ordered a wet burrito/ carnitas (you can get either red or green sauce). The hubby ordered Mojarra (fried fish). Both very delicious. The food is delicious but the service is terrible. First of all, do NOT order through Yelp or any other app, for pick up. They seem to prioritize anyone who ordered at the counter, which means that I sat there for 45 minutes while people ordered at the counter, received and left with their food. When I finally complained, they argued that "it's really busy". When I asked for an explanation to why people ordering way after me where already leaving, they turned around and made me my food. I was furious. That said, I got home and the food was very good. I don't know if I have the stomach to go back, but if I do, I'll either be eating in, or ordering at the counter. I would not have eaten here today, given the proximity of the more famous Chavez supermarket next door which always delivers a good deal. Alas, Gina C's ROTD, plus it was my turn to drive my workmates to lunch, inspired me to give it a try. And I'm glad I did. Sink your teeth into the crunchy fish burrito like I did, and discover a burrito that does not skimp on the meat. Each bite was treated to a taste of the flaky and crispy hot white fish, accompanied by rice and lettuce. Most places call them fish burritos and they should be lettuce burritos, but not here. Buy one drink, refill as much as your bladder will hold, and that does include the horchata and aguas frescas. Welcome to Episode 2 of Epic Food Battles! I'm your host, Appetite Anson, and today we're looking for some cheap eats in the plaza at Fair Oaks Avenue and Caliente Drive. Things are indeed getting muy caliente as the battle between Chavez Supermarket & Taqueria (http://www.yelp.com/biz/chavez-supermarket-and-taqueria-sunnyvale) and Tres Potrillos Taqueria heats up, in this review. Chavez and Tres Potrillos are literally right next to each other and both offer standard Mexican fare. Today we'll be comparing the hallmark of any good Mexican place: the super burrito. Now I got the al pastor (pork) from Chavez and the carne asada (beef) from Tres Potrillos, so this isn't entirely an apples-to-apples comparsion, but it's close enough. Besides, a place that makes good al pastor should know how to make good carne asada. As always, the two restaurants will face off in several rounds measuring their culinary and service prowess. ¡Comencemos! PRICES: Chavez. A super burrito at Chavez will cost you $7.29, but it's $7.60 at Tres Potrillos. SIZE: Tres Potrillos. Though price is important, size matters too! The super burrito I got from Chavez didn't seem so super in size, while the one from Tres Potrillos was nice and big, and packed with the good stuff. Oh yeahhh. FLAVOR: It's close, but I have to give this one to Tres Potrillos. My carne asada was cooked just right (slightly crispy but not greasy), and even though I ordered it without sour cream, it was not dry. I liked the taste, though it was lacking in spiciness. Chavez gave me the option of making my burrito "super spicy" which I took, but the spiciness (or lack thereof) was a letdown. My al pastor was good, but the burrito was noticeably too salty. EXTRAS: Tres Potrillos. With any order, you can help yourself to one bag of free tortilla chips and different kinds of salsa. The salsa is fresh and goes great on a burrito as well! Lime slices and other condiments are provided to give your food that extra kick. Chavez, on the other hand, doesn't provide extras like these. What you buy is what you get. SERVICE: Friendly and fast service at both places. I call this one a tie! HOURS: This one is close. Chavez opens daily from 7am - 10pm, while Tres Potrillos opens from 8am - 11pm. I do find it more useful to be able to get a burrito an hour later at night rather than an hour earlier in the morning, so this one goes to Tres Potrillos. Verdict: Chavez is both a taqueria and a supermarket, which means they can't focus all their resources on being a great taqueria. Tres Potrillos, on the other hand, offers great tasting food at albeit higher prices, but their quality plus free chips and legit salsa bar make up for it. The friend I came to both places with favors Chavez, but I say he's loco. Try both and decide for yourself! And if you're at Tres Potrillos and you see a hungry-looking guy heaping a crazy ton of salsa on his plate, say hello. That's probably me. read more

When I packed up my car and headed up the 5 away from SD after graduation, I thought I was saying goodbye to good Mexican food, but I've found my neighborhood spot for a Cali burrito fix. Located only a few blocks from my house, Tres Potrillos serves Mexican food that doesn't need orange sauce to taste good. The carnitas Cali burrito was hefty, and the meat was tender and flavorful. There's a salsa bar selection that serves pickled vegetables and fresh salsa, though the chips are a bit stale. Best of all, this place is cheap but still accepts card. Too bad it's only open until 11, so it can't be my drunken Bertos replacement. read more

I hope that three burritos didn't go un-eaten because of me. My girlfriend told me to pick up burritos for her and my sister. I was doordashing earlier that day, but even when I'm off the clock people still need me to pick up food. Back in college I used to have a dishwashing job and would never like to bring my work home with me. This led to me not washing a lot of dishes in my apartment. I don't think my roommates appreciated it, but it was very important for me to keep a work life balance. Doordashing is different though. I enjoy it so much that I'm willing to do it in my free time. So I decided to pick up burritos for my girlfriend and sister. I called ahead because I knew my clients were eager to get their food. I asked for three veggie burritos and was told it would be ready shortly. Unfortunately, when I arrived they weren't ready yet. I told them I called ahead, but they seemed confused. They asked me to repeat my order, so I did. Then they said it would be ready shortly. I was hoping it was going to be ready even shorter than the first shortly. A few minutes later the burritos came out! I grabbed them quickly because I knew my clients were losing their patience. As I walked out, I noticed there was another taqueria right next to Tres Potrillos. My heart sunk and I was finally able to put the puzzle pieces together, which is rare for me because I suck at puzzles. I'd like it if there was a puzzle board that just had the edges. It could be a "picture frame" puzzle. Anyways, I was able to figure out this figurative puzzle. The Tres Potrillos employee was confused when I said I called ahead because I never called ahead. I called the taqueria right next to it. When I arrived to my clients and told them my story, they didn't seem to care. They didn't care where or how I got the burritos, they were just happy they were here now. I wasn't happy though. I had disappointed myself and probably Chavez taqueria. I thought I was better at ordering and delivering food. Sadly, I had to learn the same lesson again. I should never bring my work home with me, no matter how much I love my work. I may have made mistakes, but Tres Potrillos didn't make any mistakes when it came to their burritos. They were delicious. read more

I like burritos that get on both sides of my face with each bite. The burritos here only get on one dainty corner of my mouth. The rice cheats by being made with tomato boullian (msg). The diablo sauce is made with butter and tapatio. The carne asada is one step away from ground beef. Chicken's way too salty. Decent salsa bar with mediocre salsa, fresh and marinated jalepenos, and chips. The best part? A buck fifty gets you free refills on aguas frescas: Pina, Horchata, Melon, Tamarind! I had two glasses of each today (except for the Tamarind). Ever since I saw what an actual Tamarind looks like, I haven't been able to swallow the juice since. The place for carnitas I got as a recommendation from my favorite Spanish speaking girl. ;-) Some reviews said the quality has gone down, but I found them quite delicious. Cost to worth it ratio: 4 (for $5/person, you're all set with a meal) Highlights: - Carnitas burrito: the best I've had -- Size: honkin. I'm not a rice beans girl, so I usually when I order without I get a skinny one. But no skimpin here! They just loaded up that space with meat! :-) They even give you a fork and a knife in case you want to go in that way. -- Meat: nice balance of crispy and tender--very tasty. -- Tortillas: one of my faves. Usually tortillas are just there to act as the vessel, but this was notable all on its own. Was warm and a bit fluffy--reminded me of a thin pancake. It was soft and pliable, yet durable. - Spicy salsa: yeee haw, not just your average salsa you see everywhere else Lowlights (my flip side to highlights): - Be on the lookout for a few super fatty chunks - Expect a bit of grease but not too much--that's where the flavor comes from ;-) I'll be back for more carnitas time! read more

Tres Potrillos is a no frills joint serving gratifying Mexican food. It's not the cleanest nor the cheapest restaurant. Don't come here expecting a healthy or light meal either. With that said, if you are a hungry soul looking for a tasty fulfilling meal, you will not be disappointed. Their fish tacos were awesome and so were anything with lengua and carnitas. There are so many esteemed burrito joints around here that when I have a hankering for a big tube of meat, guac, beans, and rice I try a new place. I might stop looking around once I find THE PLACE but in the meantime Tres Potrillos is still another lower case "place" I went to. Tres Potrillos is a bare bones place in Mexi-Sunnyvale, and the people behind the counter are friendly and happy to help. There's a salsa bar, and chips are free unless you exceed the chip bag limit, in which case extra bags are 99 cents. Chips were on the salty side and unimpressive. I wish the salsas were labeled so I'd know which was spicy and which was mild. I had the Regular Burrito ($6.25) with guacamole ($.75). I got it with regular chicken and I have to say it's the best quality chicken I've seen in a burrito joint. However, there wasn't a whole lot of guac and the burrito was ultimately kind of flavorless. I added a little salsa but it really needed some pico de gallo to pump up the flavor. My husband had the Regular Burrito, but with Grilled Chicken. This was a big mistake. Unlike most burrito joints, the burritos are made in the back so you don't get to see the trough of meats to choose from. His grilled chicken was bright orange and full of questionable gristly parts. While eating our burritos, I'd occasionally look over to see him spitting out a bite of chicken. He ended up with quite the collection of inedible chicken bites. An interesting item on the menu is the California Burrito which includes French Fries. INSIDE THE BURRITO. 3 1/2 stars for my burrito + 2 stars for my husband's burrito = 3 stars. Was hanging out with Gina C. at her place and got a sudden craving for mexican food. Checked out "Nearby" businesses on my handy dandy Yelp app, and this place popped up as being one highly rated spot. She suggested we come here (after all she did get a ROTD for this place). I noticed in some other reviews they mentioned the exterior of the restaurant. My tip is: Don't be put off by the location or the look of the plaza. It only adds to the charm of this hole in the wall. The place was bustlin' with customers on a warm Sunday afternoon, definitely looks like a busy place during the weekends. Free chips and salsa, not homemade chips, but whatever. They're free. I ordered two Super Tacos; one carnitas and one carne asada. They were good! And the horchata was yummy as well! Muy authentico! I was pretty pleasantly surprised by this place. My friend recommended it after a long day of climbing and I was starving so I didn't have much energy to object. This place is pretty ... cafeteria style as someone else put it, but generally pretty good. They have one of the BEST (yes the BEST) horchatas I've had anywhere. It's very fresh and refreshing! Their tacos are ok, lengua is ... ok... but their carne asada fries ... YUMMY. Reminds me of good ol' Mexican joints in San Diego serving up a mean dish of carne asada fries. I am catching up on all reviews of places that I've been to years ago but haven't written reviews for them yet. Next up is Tres Potrillos, I go here anytime I have a craving for authentic Mexican food. It's a small hole in the wall off of Fair Oaks in a plaza next to a Chavez Supermarket. I like going here because I can walk there anytime and get some exercise in the process. As for parking, it is not a problem, there is plenty of parking spaces. The menu is complete for a Taqueria, they have a lot of choices and pretty much anything you want. I typically get the crispy tacos which have a light crispy shell filled with any meat of your choice and piled with lettuce, salsa, cheese, etc. Their burritos are decent, quite big for the price. Their quesadillas are pretty good... the giant quesadilla fills me up with one order. Out of all the meats I like their carnitas and chicken. They also provide free chips and salsa, just grab a bag and fill'er up! Take as much salsa as you want too, they have lots to choose from. They ALWAYS have the soccer channel on the tv so don't expect Monday Night Football or any American football for that matter. It's not as cheap as nearby taco trucks in the area, but the price is expected to be a little higher since they are an actual restaurant. Recommended! read more

Hands down the best burrito in the South Bay. The carnitas are perfectly done and they give you lots of meat in your burrito which is often a point of contention that I have regarding burritos. Best of all, this place is authentic. I love walking into a Mexican restaurant and feeling as though I have been transported directly into their culture. There is always soccer playing on the TVs, they have all sorts of crazy dishes (incorporating meats like tongue, goat and other more obscure things), and they have a delicious salsa and chips bar with the best salsa verde.
