Tres Potrillos is a decent place to grab a very nice sized burrito. They have decent plates (a little heavy on the rice and beans for my taste, but still good!) decent service, with nice people, a decent atmosphere. Basically its just all around decent. In every possible way. None of their food is bad. None of it will wow you. It's dependable, well sized, and okay pricing ($9 for a burrito). It's very authentic food, so I do recommend it highly if that's what you're looking for. For me, I keep coming back because it's local and convenient and the food has never done me wrong. In my area, competitive mexican food is a little sparse, so Tres Potrillos wins in that department for it's consistency. But remove the location element, and it's just a decent, average mexican restaurant and thats why it earns its 3 stars. read more

I'll start this review with what Chris D. used to open his review, "To be brief and short: THIS PLACE IS BOMB!!!" So true, so very true. I came here since I wanted Mexican food that wasn't on the El Camino. A brief search through Yelp for carnitas (I love pork. Don't judge me.) brought me to this little gem. The ambience is nicer than some other taquerias, but not as nice as others. It's average, I guess. Tables and chairs, check. Drink fountains, check. Restrooms, check. Salsa bar, check. Chip bar, what? Unlimited chips for dining in? Bonus! OK, who really cares about the ambience? I'm sure everyone's eaten at much grimier places. Yelp is about fatties like me reviewing the gastrointestinal goodness they've consumed. Tres Potrillos does not disappoint. Ever. As I've stated earlier that I looked for carnitas since it's my favorite meat this side of chicharrones. :) What makes Tres Potrillos special is the fact that they fry their carnitas. I don't know if it's fried as part of the cooking process; little chinks of porky goodness slow-fried in lard, or if it's fried right before service to preserve the crunch. All I know is that it's damned good, and it's gotten me hooked. Another thing that brought me here was that fact that they have California burritos on the menu. Anyone can make a carnitas burrito, but adding french fries to the mix is magic. These California burritos are fat, beautifully stuffed, yumminess capsules. There is the perfect proportion between meat, potato, cheese, salsa, etc. The only way to better perfection? Yup, you've guessed it. More meat!!! Since they've got California burritos, it's only natural to have carne asada fries. Yes, I've tried them, and they've received my approval. The fries aren't super-crispy, but since you'd be eating them with a fork, there's no foul for the occasional soggy fry. They do not put salsa on the fries, but with the salsa bar, who cares? As for the carne asada itself, I've had worse. It doesn't have the smoky goodness from a fire grill like Super Taqueria has, but at very least it's super tender and well-seasoned. Just go here, now. Finally got a chance to try this place after bookmarking it for some time. This is your classic Mexican joint so don't expect it to be super clean or fancy. Just expect some good food. I cam here twice in the same week because I had to go back for the tacos. Both times I had the AL pastor, asada and fish taco. The meat of the asada taco was ok but the al pastor was very very tasty. I would definitely recommend the crispy taco for those that like it crunchy. Two times I have the fish taco, one the second occasion it was much better than the first. I've read a lot of good reviews on the carne asada fries and nachos so I'll have to try that next time for sure. They have a bar full of sauces, chips and spicy carrots. DRINKS: I always go for the Horchata. They have self service wells so you can more. One of the better joints around this area. One plus, they also take credit cards. read more

First time here. I was craving for a breakfast burrito and this place has a good rating on Yelp plus it was close to where I was. This place is scheduled to open at 0800, but when I arrived at 0800 it was still closed. Had to wait 10 minutes for them to open up! I hate that! I ordered the bacon burrito. After ordering, I sat at one of the tables to wait for my order. I noticed that the table was very dirty! This was surprising since I was only the second customer to enter after the place opened! The burrito was huge and filled very nicely with potatoes, eggs and bacon. Unfortunately, the bacon was not properly cooked. It was not crispy at all because the fat was not properly rendered. I finally found my Sunnyvale go-to Mexican joint! Between myself, my sister and b-i-l, we ordered super burritos (carne asada, shrimp and al pastor), carne asada fries, and 2 orders of shrimp tostadas. We probably spent a little less than $50 in total. They give free chips (one per order) that you can grab when you pick it up. Their salsa bar is clean and the green creamy avocado sauce is amazing. I LOVED my al pastor burrito, the meat was flavorful and I got some crunchy grilled bits with every bite. The carne asada was good, but the flavors in the asada were not super strong. The fries stayed crunchy and didn't get super soggy even though the drive home. I liked my shrimp tostada, even though they forgot the tostada with it... (I didn't mind too much, they gave me free chips!) The shrimps were cut in half and were the hugest I've had. You get a pass if you get carne asada. But at that point if you get boring carne asada just walk around the rest of your life wearing a Bill Crosby sweater vest by being a total square. Wow, I definitely don't share the same feelings as the other yelpers but I wish I did. First, I went to the restroom before we ate and it was absolutely disgusting. It smelled incredibly strongly of urine and wasn't clean at all. I do not want to eat food made by people who use that bathroom...but I did anyway.. The tortilla chips are a little thicker than what I prefer. The salsa bar is a nice touch, but I only liked one out of the three salsas. The salsa verde is delicious. The other two have a strong chipotle flavor that I don't care for. I ordered the Chile Relleno and Enchilada. The enchilada was good enough, but I didn't care for the Chile Relleno. The guac was really watery and not good. My sister-in-law ordered a quesedilla with carne asada and she could only eat a few bites. The beef was absolutely disgusting (i tried it). My husband had three crunchy tacos. These were actually pretty good. The beef, which was the same as in the quesdilla was disgusting. The pork was quite good, and I usually don't like pork. The chicken was pretty good. I liked that they had both grilled and shredded chicken, as I don't love shredded chicken. I depended on Yelp to help find me a good taqueria and was greatly disappointed. Decor dated and dusty. That should have been a clue. We walked up to order and as we browsed the menu we were NEVER greeted nor even asked what we wanted, the young woman at the register even turned her back and walked towards the kitchen to chat with the workers there. I had to shout "Excuse me??" to get her back to take my order. We ended up ordering a couple of burritos and hunted in vain for a clean table to sit at. We took napkins and wiped down the least dirty one and waited to be served. When our food arrived there was NEVER any attempt to clean up or wipe down properly the table we sat at. I'm a big fan of hole in the wall taquerias. Tres Portillos comes pretty close but not quite. It's got a nice corner part of the mall and it's next to a Valero gas station so it's not too hard to find. The only drawbacks here are getting into/out of the parking lot (since Fair Oaks can be crazy during lunch hours) and sometimes it's crowded enough where it's hard to find a seat. Otherwise, great authentic food, very wide selection (the only place other than Taqueria Latina that has great Tripitas) and they have two tv's so that you can watch the World Cup games. read more

Yum! Had their Super burrito with Carne Asada. The meat was flavorful and the rice was good. The meat was cooked nicely and wasn't dry. The burrito was delicious and flavorful - I liked every bite I took! I love that they have a sauce/salsa bar with a bag of fresh chips for every order. Disappointing was that their salsas were not very spicy. Also had Super Nacho Fries that were delicious! I love that they melt large slices of cheese on top instead of using Nacho Cheese. Place is legit. Growing up in Southern California, I had AMAZING Mexican food, so I can be a bit picky. But this place is legit in taste and in prices. I've been to one too many Mexican joints that overcharge for a taco. Anyway, came here with some friends and place was empty. I had the carne asada fries (delicious! loved the generous helping of meat!) and a crispy carnitas taco and soft chicken taco. DAMN there's lots of meat and salsa on the tacos! There is no skimping! The carnitas was nice and tender! There's a salsa bar and you get a bag of chips with each order. Oh and I must mention the prices are CHEAP! They have other things on the menu such as enchiladas, burritos and quesadillas. I will say the place isn't the cleanest and when my girlfriends and I went here we were the only women customers and some guy was arguing with someone outside and hitting the window. (Crazy..). The restaurant been recently renovated and cleaned up. The location (strip mall on a busy street) is about as utilitarian as it gets. This is not a place to take your first date if you want to impress him/her. That I give it 3 stars doesn't mean it's not worth going to. My food fanatic friend, Patrick G, comes over to my desk with 2 print outs from yelp: "what do you think? this one or this other one" Something told me to point at "Tres Potrillos", so we went to try it out. We got there, it was nicely air conditioned for a semi-hot day. There is a weird humming noise though, that combined with the food, puts you to sleep... so be ready to take a "siesta" after eating here. After looking at the nice pictures and realizing those were probably more money I cared to spend for lunch, I decided to go for the tried and true Burrito. I thought about the fish burrito advertised as the day's special. But after eating fresh fish in Hawaii, eating fish anywhere else seems to rotten. Chicken Super Burrito was the staple of the day. It came in about 5 minutes: super fast. I barely had time to try the salsas. Salsas were good. Spicy enough for a Mexican, mild enough for a non-Mexican. Very flavorful. The burrito was good, but not amazing. Chicken was savory, and ingredients were very fresh. Overall, a good taqueria, but nothing really special that makes me want to go back. I ordered food through a delivery service tonight. This review is ONLY based on the restaurant. I really really wanted a chile relleno. So I ordered the chile relleno, enchilada, and taco combo. When I get my food, no chile relleno. So I contact the delivery service, they contact the restaurant, and ask for the missing items. When I get the second delivery, it wasn't even close to what I ordered, and still no chile relleno. This is not the first time I've had problems with this place. But this was the last. I ordered a taco plate here and it came with three tacos and rice and beans. The rice and beans and meat-on-taco were all delicious!! However, the default salsa was sooo freaking spicy that I was unable to enjoy my meal to its fullest SINCE my mouth was on FIRE. They also have free chips w/ salsa here and I was very excited to take that to-go and eat at home! To my extreme dismay, it was the same SUPER SPICY salsa that was on my tacos!!! I had to toss the salsa and dip my chips into the pasta I had for dinner.. GAH I believe that if your salsa is THAT spicy then it should be labeled as extra hot or something.. What I love about places like this is that they're an example to the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover". From the outside you would think that it's "ghetto" and "dirty", but those are the places that I love, especially for Mexican food. For me, places like this scream out "AUTHENTIC" and it was confirmed when you walk in and see the clientele. Fellow Mexicans dining at a Mexican place with Telemundo on the television are definitely good signs for me. If that wasn't enough, the smell of carne asada cooking as you walk in is an added bonus. The burritos here are a good size and you get a good portion for $7-8. They pack a lot of meat (of your choice) along with salsa, sour cream, and the other fixings in a burrito. There's also a salsa bar to get your salsa needs and there's also a chip bar to grab some tortilla chips. Note: I think you're only allowed one bag, but you'll get more than enough. Recently, I noticed that they're serving carne asada fries now. After spending my college years in SoCal, I love me some carne asada fries and am glad when I see them in NorCal. What I was really surprised was that they are the only place in the South Bay that serves California Burritos (to my knowledge). Just like the regular burrito, you get a good portion of meat and you'll definitely get full. Also, major points for using skinny fries; a definite must when you make carne asada fries or a California Burrito. My only complaint is that they could've cooked the fries a little longer so that they're crispy, but I can't complain too much. Not as good as the ones in SD, but it satisfies my fix. For those who complain about it being in a "shady" or "ghetto" area, it's their loss. It's places like these where you'll find the best food and customers who love authenticity. read more

As soon as my coworkers and I found this place it became a regular part of our lunch rotation. I've had the tacos, enchiladas and some of the other dishes here and I've never been disappointed. My coworkers love the burritos here. The food has always been fresh, piping hot, well prepared and oh so satisfying. Yum! Customers order at the counter (they have plenty of pictures of their food on one of the walls), help themselves to the chips and salsa, fill their cups with their beverage of choice, and take a seat at a table to wait for the food to be delivered. A wide range of drinks are available. There are several varieties of salsa to chose from and be warned that some of them pack some heat! They are freshly prepared and absolutely delicious. The restaurant itself is on the small side, so there may be an issue with enough seating if you come in a large group during the lunch rush. Parking is available in the lot. It's in a small strip mall, next to a grocery store. Ambiance = dive but this place is truly a hidden gem. It's one of the better places for authentic Mexican food in the South Bay. Coming from socal, mexican food just doesn't cut it in the bay area. Tres Potrillos makes it come pretty close, however. The area is sorta like the slums of Sunnyvale if you can imagine there being one. It's Sunnyvale! There are hobos outside and shady looking people. I actually waited in my car for my friends when I arrived early. Anyways, this place has carne asada fries! This is a gem in the bay area and I haven't found many places that sell this. I thought the food here is borderline expensive but they give large amounts. The fish tacos came in at about $3 each and that's pretty expensive. The fries and burritos are actually pretty sizable for their price at about $7 each. I recommend this place but with a warning that the area is quite shady. read more

We was skeptical when we decide to try this place. One of my trusted foodie website was raving about this taqueria, but it was 6 years ago. As you know it, restaurant goes up and down over the years. We ordered Carnitas bowl, carne asada fries and a wet burrito. I admit we were hungry, but we didn't realize how much food it was. After my attempt to stuff my face with food. We could only finish the very tasty (friesta) carnitas bowl and half of the carne asada plate. I can promiss you this place carnitas is legit, not my best to date, but the seasoning is just right. How is it that I passed this place on the way to work every single day for 8 months and didn't even know it existed? I am a huge carnitas fan and had two favorite carnitas joints in the bay area - Taqueria Tlaquepaque in San Jo and El Gruellense in Pacheco (reviews forthcoming). Now I have three favorite places thanks to Tres Portillos, and thank God I no longer have to go to south San Jo or all the way to Pacheco for some bomb ass carnitas tacos! The carnitas at Tres Portillos is tasty with bits of crunchy meat throughout. Their tacos are huge, about double the size of El Grullense and Taqueria Tlaquepaque, with the meat piled up high. I ordered 6 the first time because I thought they were going to be small like the authentic tacos. Let me tell you, the taste was authentic but these bad boys were big. I was already full as I started on the fourth one, but tried to finish them all because they were That. Damn. Good. Four stars for serving meat so good it made me want to sit down and take a nap right after eating! read more

This place has delicious tacos! Ruby's was way too packed during lunch so decided to get lunch at this place. They have a lot of choices to choose from and they all looked good. I have to say I still like Ruby's more but this place follows close behind. I got the fish taco plate and it was pretty good. I love that you can get hard tacos, they were so good! I will definitely come here again. You can munch on some complimentary chips and salsa as you wait for your food. Tres Potrillos Taqueria is more noted for the Valero and the "Taqueria 3" sign outside or as my friends like to say, "Take-er-iya Three". I love fish tacos and one of the first times I went I got seafood. HIGHLY not recommended. Totally recommended are the tacos and the quesadillas. The BBQ chicken is awesome. I remember when this place used to be a Chinese restaurant, then it was something else and now it's Tres Potrillos Taqueria. We came in here to find an alternative to our usual Ruby's Taqueria and we noticed that the prices are a bit higher than our usual place but the selections were more. They had items I haven't seem like a WET BURRITO. We saw a table order two and they were gigantic and looked yummy. May want to try one of those these days. My cousin ordered a carne asada burrito and I had the carnitas bowl. The burrito was big and had lots of meat but lacked the hot sauce that we are accustomed to. I really wanted to like this place based on the reviews. The portions aren't as large people have said they were. I ordered a super quesadilla (which wasn't super at all). Barely any cheese or meat inside the tortilla. The picture menu on the wall also showed that it came with salsa but my plate only came with guacamole and sour cream. I asked the lady at the register for some extra salsa and she pointed at the salsa/chips bar which did not have any salsa left! There was barely any and there was a dirty straw and napkin floating on top of what was left of it. GROSS. I looked at her and was like, REALLY?! She didnt even bother to refill it. Tucked away in a nondescript strip mall behind a Valero gas station, this tacqueria serves up authentic Mexican food, done right. Tres Potrillos is your typical hole-in-the-wall Mexican food. It serves the typical fare like burriitos, tacos, quesdillas and more. What I appreciated was that it had a special section for vegetarian options. I ended up ordering the cheese enchilada dinner plate. I mean it was nothing out of the ordinary but it did the job. They did give a decent quantity of food, which nice because other places would skimp out to make your food feel as cheap as possible. The biggest driving factor for Tres Potrillos is the fact that its open late. On a weekday, it's one of the only places open past 10PM. You can tell that people appreciate this because there were a decent number of people on a random Wednesday night. Truth be told though, the immediate view of the place is dingy. It didn't help that the sign had a different name than Tres Potrillos. If you can get past that, its a decent place. This place definitely doesn't top my list for late night places but it is one I can appreciate to visit every now and then. The food tastes really good here, but they have some questionable actions at times. I had high hopes for this place because the reviews on Yelp were so good.. BUT they messed up on my order. I wanted a breakfast burrito so bad and I ordered a breakfast burrito with Asada. Once I got home.. unwrapped my burrito that was wrapped in foil.. which was great because it kept it hot it had.. rice and asada.. thats it. :( where was the EGGS and cheese??
