I'm basically right next to this place all day and cannot force myself to eat there. On th plus side this is a great location with super friendly staff with fast service. The real problem is the food resembles something served in a high school cafeteria. I've tried multiple things on the menu and I always regret seeing my order brought to me. Russ and I were here for breakfast before watching the Outrigger and SUP races on the beach. It was nice to see an old school diner, as those are my fave. We paddle in the area quite often, so I have driven by with curiousity a few times. The service was a little slow, but I have been spoiled by the other restaurants and had to get back into my diner mentality. Also, there's a sign that said "turn off your cell phones". I turned off the ringer, but would still look at instagram and twitter. They didn't seem to mind. I ordered bacon and eggs, which came out promptly and was as good as I had for bacon and eggs(overeasy). The service was good and of course near the ocean is great. I had the world famous Weasel dish. Meh, chili was pretty bland, surprisingly so to be honest. This place reminds me of schooner or later. Both are great little local beach haunts. While I enjoy both places overall, I'd have to say if either of these places were in a strip mall in Van Nuys I doubt they'd have that much business. I just finished throwing up the lunch I had there today. Just don't do it. I ordered soup and sandwich and the pancakes for my son. They gave my son an uncooked sausage. Thankfully I cut it open before giving it to him and I have been ill since about two hours after I left without being able to eat and finally I threw it up. I hope that's the end of it. This is a cute little diner, just off the sands of Long Beach. They close at 2:30 PM. We walked in at 2:15 PM and they were still gracious enough to service us. I had the famous weasel, which was a nice sample of scrambled eggs smothered in their chili, with cheese and onions. Very delicious. Their Ridge style potatoes are also excellent. We LOVE Chucks!!! The BEST Coffee is served there, the most welcoming people work there. The FOOD is delicious and makes you feel like your eating moms cooking. We love chucks. And Chuck himself, is a very warm, and loving man. He makes you feel like you were invited to dine at his home. Chuck will even come and take your empty plate off the table. Such a humble Resturant Owner. My husband and I have moved from California, but every time we are in town visiting family, we make it a POINT to stop by Chucks and get our morning "feel good", even if we have to drive 2 hours to get it. My absolute favorite breakfast spot in the whole entire world! I used to live a block away and would come multiple times a week. The guys that work there are like family. I crave the weasel now that I live an hour away. Every time I'm in Long Beach I have to make a stop at Chucks. Service is always fast and friendly, and food is always consistent and delicious. Cash only and I do wish credit card payment was on option, but there's an ATM and prices are extremely reasonable. We miss Chuck since he passed as our neighbor and friend. I've been coming to Chuck's since I was 4 years old and attending the preschool around the corner. All I can say is: this place needs new management. The food is ok, not great. Eggs, pancakes, french toast, and potatoes are good (if you like french fry-style potatoes for breakfast). The toast is just gross, partly due to being slathered in yellow water (or is it margarine?) and ALWAYS arriving cold. And the bacon; here they use the twice cooked method, where the bacon is cooked ahead of time and then reheated when you order it, essentially cooking all the flavor out of it. So disappointing. And one time, when I sent my food back for being completely burned, I heard the waitress having to assuage the cook who was having a hissy fit that he had to remake an order. But all of this wouldn't be that bad if it wasn't for the owner, Chuck. Every single time I've seen him in the past 5 years he is completely drunk. And we're talking at like 11am or noon, not 3pm. I stopped coming to Chuck's about a year ago because of the uncomfortable sexist comments he makes, but my dad kept going longer than I did. The last time he went Chuck was completely disheveled, drunk off his rocker, and then got in his car to drive home. I'm amazed the girls (who are very sweet and probably the best part of this coffee shop) are able to stand him. I'm not a diner kind of guy. Yup, you guessed it, here's another misadventure for the Reluctant All American Breakfast Queen! To be honest this day I was hoping we would have some beignets at Johnny Rebs' but that didn't happen. Instead we went to Chuck's Coffee Shop which lies on a corner and is a triangular shaped restaurant. Interesting. We were brought here by two friends of ours who really love this place after we had gone for a nice two hour walk up and down the Long Beach boardwalk. Service here is very friendly and it's good too. We didn't have to wait too long and our coffees were always refilled in a timely manner. I had the Weasel. Their signature dish. It's scrambled eggs topped with homemade chili and some really awesome potatoes on the side. Let me tell you their potatoes are great! They are fried just right! They are not soggy at all! The chili is pretty good too and I liked the combo it makes with the scrambled eggs. I also got rye bread toast on the side! Yes, rye bread! Awesome! I tried some of their pancakes too and enjoyed them. The place has character. There's an old fashioned heater in the middle of the restaurant. Surely a good idea in the winter months! It also seems to be touristy. They sell t shirts. Parking is hell around here if you don't want to pay, but we found parking right in front. You can also park in the beach lots - which are not free. "How about... a Weasel?" I always read it out loud and laugh. This is one of my favorite dive places to get breakfast on the weekends. I come here often with the old man. Since I'm not awake 'till the afternoon, I'm happy that they serve breakfast all day. I usually get The Weasel. which is chili and eggs with round home fries. You can add onion and cheese for an extra buck. Props for offering spinach as a side. This place would get a three stars from me but the kitchen staff is amazing. Whats better than quick food always made right, never any mistakes?! ( Never longer than a 6 min ticket time, I'm a picky with many substitutions). They are lighting fast with the orders and our food is always piping hot. Whoever said Mexicans are lazy has never worked in the restaurant industry. This kitchen is very consistent. Confession: I've lived in Long Beach for about five years within walking distance of Chuck's and have never been there until today. I'm not a morning person, and most of time I'm not a breakfast person either. So by the time I would wake up on a Saturday or Sunday morning it was too late to get a table at Chuck's Today however was different. I wanted to walk to breakfast and I didn't want to go to the Coffee Cup for fear I would get caught in the rain. I bundled up and took a stroll down to Chuck's and was ready to eat. I quickly realized that there was a crowd of hungry diners also waiting for a table outside. No worries, there was hot coffee waiting for everyone and I helped myself to a cup while I waited in the blustering wind. It wasn't long until I got a table and Chuck himself brought me a menu. Chuck is a very cool guy, I may have a little crush on him. Despite the wind and impending rain he was greeting customers wearing a Hawaiian shirt, sunglasses and a baseball cap. I asked Chuck what he recommended and in about 30 seconds he walked me through the menu pointing out some of the more popular dishes and some of his favorites. If I had a hangover, I would have totally ordered The Weasel (scrambled eggs topped with homemade chili and cheese). I decided to get an Ortega Chili omelet and at Chuck's recommendation I asked for some salsa that was really good and very authentic. After we are done eating, Chuck makes a remark to us to leave? I was oh he just joking, for he likes to joke with his guest! I look around and place was still half full so I new he was joking. 10 minutes later he comes back and says to us, " I have a business to run,I need to turn tables & how many times I tell you guys to leave". Granted it was 2pm, the place was half empty and If it was busy we would have left a long time ago, since all 3 of us are in the same business as Chuck! My friends are correct Chuck was not the same cool person and alot of us stop going there. I like there staff, but now I only will go there when Chuck is not there. I had the same reaction as the other guy- only two reviews??? Everyone gets caught up with the other big 3 but this one is a hidden gem. The best part is it's on the beach and outside. Just like the other places, you're gonna have to wait! I think I like the atmosphere- makes me feel like I'm back in the 50's, not like I know what that means but it definitely has that nostalgic feel and unique character the other places don't have. And that's where the positivity ends. The food's mediocre and overpriced, and the service was rotten. We had pancakes and a sausage-mushroom-cheese omelet; edible but nothing one couldn't whip up in minutes at home. They screwed up the boyfriend's omelet (chiles instead of sausage) and getting our coffee refilled took effort. The only quick part of the service? Harry H, my lovely boyfriend, introduced me to Chucks and I was very surprised I had never been here before. The weasel truly is a great hangover cure, but even if you're not hungover, it's still delcious. Especially with the potoatoes! Those alone are a reason to come to Chuck's. My daughter loves the Banana pancakes and surprised both of us adults by eating the entire 3-cake stack. Lots of regulars, great service, and apple butter on your table. This is the neighborhood coffee shop, with a neighborly Chuck to greet you on most days. You go here enough (and I used to) and you start recognizing the same people over and over again. Including the waitresses, many of whom seem to have worked here for years. I'm sure I could go there now get they'd set me up with what I usually ordered. I have eaten her a handful of times and have certainlty enjoyed it, although I am not a fan of trying to get a seat at this place. This is the type of place that is VERY polarizing, I would venture to guess people either love it or hate it. I, amazingly, kinda ride the fence on this one.
