I was looking for a brunch spot in the South Bay when Gabi James popped up. Saw the menu and I had to go eat there. The food was fresh and tasty. Had the tomate toast which I added the Jamón on it, and it was an explosion of flavor when peeled pearl marinated tomatoes popped in my mouth. The Spanish Tortilla was great with bits of onions mixed in topped with a white créame with a hint of spice. The papas on a bed of paella aioli green sauce topped with bits of Spanish bacon bits or chorizo not too sure but it was to die for. The food was great and the service was top-notch. The hostess was very knowledgeable about the menu and even made suggestions. Can't wait to try the Lamb Shank for dinner menu with pomegranate gravy. read more

This restaurant is a keeper on my list! The tortilla espanhola melts in your mouth and the sherry vinegar aioli on top adds a nice brightness and acidic tang to wake up your tastebuds. As for the citrus quince salad, I could not get enough of this. It was just incredible in every bite. The sweetness of the quince paste was the most lovely addition. If you only get one item (but why would you), let it be this salad! And those pomegranate lamb chops - YUMMY!! They were so tender. I had no qualms about gnawing every last bit of meat off those bones. They were perfectly seasoned and the crispy potatoes pair well. I wish I could've tried the octopus as well as the croquettes, but that just means I have a good excuse to come back here again for more! read more

Gabi James is the peak of amazing cuisine finally making it to the Riviera! I've been eager to come by as soon as it opened and finally made it over for their brunch menu. Reservations can be made ahead of time for dinner. There is a good amount of seating available outside as well as a very cute interior and inside bar. Dogs are allowed on the patio! The service was quick and attentive and a menu had some great options making it difficult to choose what we wanted. The dinner menu is only available after 4 PM so we were limited to brunch, but there were several savory and non-traditional options. My favorite hands down was the shoestring fries that came along side the chorizo burger. I was shocked by how big the bowl was, definitely enough to share! The burger itself was an interesting mix of savory and sweet flavors, I liked it but I know some people don't enjoy that combination! Another item worth trying is the oxtail hash. I was super impressed by the amount of protein on the plate and the meat was high quality and well flavored. The only thing I would not order again was the papas/potato dish. The fingerling potatoes were a bit bland and the green sauce on the bottom of the plate was a bit bitter. I am super eager to come back and try the dinner menu after this amazing experience! First time dinning here. The location is great. We had a group of 6 and the staff was very attentive. I ordered the gambas and felt that the portion sizes were far too small for the price. It was about 6 shrimps and a slice of toast. The taste was good but was not filing enough. I also wasn't a fan of everything being brought out to share and then having to rearrange what everyone ordered. Brussels were ok. One of my favorite restaurants because of the ambience, the selection of handcraft cocktails, the service, and of course, the food. Everything is made in-house, including the sausage, dressings, and tasty chips served after you are seated. I haven't had a bad meal yet! I'm thankful to live walking distance, so I can go often. I've been dying to try this place ever since I found them on Yelp two months ago, while I was searching for good paella. I got the oxtail ragu and potato croquettes. Both dishes came out pretty quickly, and they gave me some chips as a starter. The chips were okay, would've been nice with some sort of dip or sauce. The ragu was incredibly oily, and came with crisped triangular penne-looking pasta. There were whole chunks of garlic thrown in for good measure. Super oily and not much flavor. I would've loved some sweetness from tomatoes or something. The potato croquettes are literally just upscale tater tots, if you like that kind of stuff. I love potatoes as much as the next person, but I really thought there was going to be some sort of filling other than mashed potato inside. The aioli it came with was lacking, as well--there was a teeeeensy kick (the kind you might get from a pinch of cayenne) and the rest was just mayo. Both dishes were super rich and lacking flavor and I wasn't really about it. No comment on the service, as I sat at the bar. Really bad experience last Friday night. Took 20 minutes to get drinks after we sat. Then instead of bringing all of our meals together they brought mine, 7 minutes later they brought my wife's, about another 7 minutes later my friends then about another 7 minutes later they came over and said they messed up on one of our orders of paella and we should order something else unless we wanted to wait 20 minutes. For all that and a $350 bill they took off two $10 appetizers, not even the entree ! We are pretty understanding that things happen and so often when the establishment is generous with what occurred we can fill with it but that was so insulting. Growing up in the area, there was always a dearth of great places to eat. It was mostly a bunch of gringo-mex places and low rent seafood. As long-time L.A. foodies, we always wondered when they would bring great restaurants to the South Bay (that didn't fight the prevalent beach vibe). Those days are thankfully gone, and Gabi James is yet more proof that great cuisine and cocktails could make it in the South Bay. Lots of places around here play it safe, so I must say I was impressed that their cocktail menu focused on gin. How often have I seen that? Never. You can call from about two dozen types of gins and a dozen mixers. Now I'm no gin guy, but I sure love originality. On our first time, we sampled all appetizers and avoided the big plates all by accident--they just sounded so good and looked amazing. Merguez sausage, Serrano ham, fritters, salt-crusted potatoes with green sauce, calamari. It's all basically wonderful Spanish/European tapas done with modern creativity and skill. We loved every single dish, but definitely try the "Tortilla Espanola" (actually stacked layers of potato) A must! read more

My husband's and my first dinner out with other people towards the end of this pandemic was with my in-laws on Friday at Gabi James and it did not disappoint. The food was really good, especially the garlic shrimp with grilled bread. I mean who doesn't love really amazing grilled bread with shrimp, garlic and olive oil. The only thing that they could up their game on is the pan con tomato. Also they provide complimentary sparking water (love me my sparkling water). Cute spot where you can sit outside in a central part of Redondo Beach and walk around after your meal. If you are looking for a place to host private party, Gabi James is THE place for you! We had our wedding celebration dinner at Gabi James private room (upstairs) few weeks ago, and couldn't ask for more. My husband and I wanted a nice intimate dinner with good food and wine for our guests after our wedding, and we were so glad that Gabi James helped us to achieve that! The upstairs patio connects to the private room was perfect for the cocktail hour. We had the entire place ourselves. The dinner was beautiful and the food was amazing. Our guests had a great time, and enjoyed the food and drink a lot! Everyone particularly loves the croquettes, citrus-quince salad, skirt steak, sea bass and shoestrings fries. Not to mention the delicious vanilla bread pudding! It's way better than having cakes in my opinion ;) Sara and Adam (owners) are also wonderful to work with. They went out of their way to make sure our day went smoothly and perfectly. We had to postpone our wedding from last year to this fall due to Covid. Since we don't live in SoCal, I was a bit nervous about the logistics. Sara responded promptly and patiently to my emails, and offered great suggestions. She was flexible and easy to work with throughout the entire process. Wedding planning is stressful but Sara definitely made my planning easier. My friends and I were looking forward to a nice Bridal brunch here after celebrating a bachelorette weekend for my friend but it turned into a horrible experience. Upon arrival, our waitress (Maria) was giving us attitude everytime we wanted to order or ask her questions. The food and drinks were great, so we decided to ignore her behavior and have fun. After we paid, we were using the bathroom and as we were walking out, I overheard our waitress tell the bartender under her breath "I'm glad that wasn't my bachelorette!" I was in shock, I couldn't believe it! You don't go around talking about customers. When we confronted the restaurant staff, she went and hid inside and only came back out to give an excuse about why she said that comment which made no sense. I guess maybe something happened to you for you to say that about us for no reason. So rude! No apology was given. The manager handled it well as guests starting asking us what happened and we were just looking for some accountability. He said he would speak to the owner and someone would be contacting us. We would like a response back. Just had a wonderful dinner last night at Gabi James! The owner (I think) and our server had excellent customer service and were so welcoming! We started our meal with croquettes, the tortilla appetizer and shishito peppers. All of them were great. The sauces made them even better :) I also enjoyed the complimentary house chips they bring out and dipped them in the aioli that comes with the croquettes. Cesar salad was also excellent!! For the main entree we got the oxtail Ragu, and paella. The reason for 4 stars rather than 5 was because the penne in the ragu was too al dente and was strangely crispy? I also thought the paella could've used something more, just seemed a little one note compared to the rest of the meal. But overall, great experience and we'll be back! read more

I would like to give a shout out to Ricky the bartender on his personableness towards his customers. I learned a lot about the focus of the bar ("a Gin Bar") when he explained why there were so many brands of gin on the shelves. I could see spending more time at this establishment and also bringing out of town guests here to dine. The manager Victor couldn't be anymore of an arrogant, disrespectful, and pretentious dick with all his gold jewelry and Newsom loving attitude. We have supported this establishment for a number of years contributing thousands per year to the owner who at times I considered a friend. Tonight my girlfriend went to grab us a table while I walked our dogs down the street to drop them off at home due to Victors strict pet guidelines and victor denied her access to seating. He said until I arrived she had to stand there in the cold and wait. This was sitting for two people, she couldn't even sit down and grab a $20 cocktail. I actually called and asked him why he was denying her entry especially considering it appears they have been absolutely failing at filling tables and he scoffed at me and said health code, I said what health code wouldn't let her sit down ahead of my entry and he couldn't say a word. He then said while on the phone that "fine she can go ahead". I come to find out she's already now across the street almost in tears promising to never go there again. Well nice job guys, I pulled up my Gabi James tab for 2019 and I was almost $6000. I couldn't believe it myself but that's how often we ate here. We won't ever be back. We had an AWFUL experience tonight. I was sitting outside and the restaurant closed off one of its doors because a table of obnoxious guests were "too cold," and as a result I was asked by the wait staff almost every other minute to stand up so they can move past me. What a FIRE HAZARD and a terrible guest experience. Then the manager RUDELY approached me and insisted I move out of the way from the place THEY seated me. Why come to a restaurant to be treated like second class citizens. I would get better treatment at a jail. Btw the comment from the manager below is INACCURATE! Yes I was asked multiple times to get up by staff in that restaurant. And No I was not comped anything on my bill. We had been meaning to try some of the newer places in Riviera Village when we went on the spur of the moment with friends to Gabi James. It was great! In general, I'm not a fan of shared plates, but these were worth sharing (with the right people, of course). I ordered the lamb chops, my husband had the snapper; both were excellent. Our friends had a beautifully plated salad and what the restaurant called a tortilla (I think) that was a couple of inches thick and very rich - it would have been too rich for one person. We all shared a dessert that was equally as good as the butter cake at Nick's in MB (until now, my favorite dessert ever) - the waitress described it as a combination of flan and creme brûlée, and we will will definitely have it when we go back next week. Gabi James is the new Spanish influenced tapas-inspired restaurant and bar with a modern, beachy feel and plenty of large plates. We had reservations for 2, and the restaurant was only about half full on a Thursday night. There is convenient metered parking throughout Riviera Village, so access is easy. There is a full bar with seating as well as indoor and outdoor tables. The bar has two televisions to broadcast the sports game of the moment. The service is attentive and friendly, and the restaurant is very clean (it is new after all). The blonde woods and multi-colored palette are festive and casual. FYI: the restaurant is basically freezing, because it is open to the out of doors. Three medium sized plates are perfect for two to share. We had: CHOPPED SALAD ($13): ribbons of romaine and radicchio are tossed in a tangy and well seasoned sumac-sherry vinaigrette with roasted chickpeas, slices of red onion and cucumber, halved mini grape tomatoes, little cubes of mahon cheese and diced pepperoncini. It was tangy and light with nutty notes from the chickpeas, little bursts of creaminess from the cheese and highlights of sweetness from the tomatoes. Really delicious. COASTAL CHICKPEA FRITTER ($12): I would be unlikely to order the soggy chickpea pancake with a few bits of shrimp and scallion topped with housemade yogurt and smoked paprika again. It was just filler and nothing to write home about. It was edible, but why bother. HOUSEMADE MERGUEZ ($16): this was another great dish. A coil of housemade merguez sausage (lamb) was served with arugula in a light vinaigrettte and topped with mechouia of minced peppers, onions and garlic. The slightly gamey (in a good way) lamb sausage was well seasoned with paprika and cumin. It was crisp but not dry, and the tangy greens and mechouia brought much needed freshness to a heavy dish. I ordered the FUNKY COLD MOLINA ($12), which advertises "bourbon, oloroso sherry syrup, lemon, egg white, and jerry thomas bitters." It was pretty light when it arrived and I thought that there must be about 1 t. of bourbon and some other ingredient. It was not smooth and was overly sweet with undertones of herbs. Then, the bartender realized she made the drink with gin rather than bourbon. Grrrrrr.... She remade it, and the remake was wonderful - smooth and refreshing with a nice balance between sweet and bitter. I loved the drink...when it was prepared right. Overall, I enjoyed my dinner. I would say that Gabi James is a solid 3.5 stars or so, so I am rounding up as the service was quite good. I would come again. read more

My first and last time here. The pathetic owner made the waitress come and tell us they will never again allow protein on a salad. The waitress was so embarrassed that the owner made a fuss about it. You can have protein at lunch, but not at dinner on a salad. And the owner doesn't have the guts to come and tell us, well you won't get me supporting your business. Not a shock that you are the only restaurant in the riviera that always has tables available and never a wait. Food is overpriced and blah and the drinks are the same. I was very disappointed with my dinner experience totally not worth the money we pay for it, my braised chicken was terrible, no flavor at all. I was excited to come to this place even though is far for us, I waited one hour to be seated which it's fine because I didn't make no reservations but after being seated I waited another 30 minutes for someone to come take our order and that was because we called them while they were somewhere inside the restaurant. Started with the croquettes (delicious), gf ordered the filet with peppercorn sauce (bomb) and I ordered the Fideua. The problem? When I was handed my Fideua, it was dropped off with the handle facing me and no mention or warning of the dish being absurdly hot. So while eating, my arm briefly touched the pan and got a pretty solid burn. Kind of sucks but besides that, a pretty solid dining experience. Just a note to management, please ask your employees to mention when specific dishes are extremely hot so that other individuals can avoid burns in the future. Text '1' to tell us you are on your way. Text '9' to cancel. Our server was Robert. Great guy, very professional, and he helped us through the menu as this was our first time at GJ. We had the Potatoe Croquettes w/ Hassria Aioli and Jamon Serrano for an appetizer. Great texture with just a little spicy bite. Perfect to get your palate going for the main course. Main course consisted of Citrus-Quince Salide and Poisson Provencal - Whole Mediterranean Sea Bass. The presentation of everything was excellent and the food was superb. For dessert, we had the Crème Catalan and the Chocolate-Cherry Tartuffo. Both were extremely decadent. This place just took one of my top 10 dining spots in all of the South Bay. So, first I just want to preface this review but stating I realize the restaurant opened just three weeks ago, so some of the issues we had might be worked out quickly. We had early dinner reservations for a Saturday evening, and the redo of the restaurant is nice, but if you want expansive window views you have deal with really harsh invasive sunlight during the early evening hours. Half the restaurant requires you to wear sunglasses while you eat. I would suggest investing in some some type of window shading if you want to open early. Now, not wanting to eat our meal and get a tan at the same time, we requested a table further back from the front of the restaurant. We were offered a table in the bar area, which is still in the sun flooded area of the restaurant, upon discussing this with "the manager" we were offered the table we asked for, but were told we would have to be finished in an hour, as they would need the table for an 8 top. Not the best way to start your dinner. Now halfway through our meal they started putting other groups at the adjoining tables, but no one let us know we wouldn't have to rush through our meal. Being vegan I opted for the chopped salad, which was good, just spent some time picking out quite a bit of cheese. My fault I should have ask them to serve it without. Now my partner ordered the Fideua, the pasta was way over cooked. Now, the Pan Con Tomate was delicious. I'm sure with all the background and experience this restaurant has going for it, this will become a bright spot in the South Bay restaurant scene. read more

Faves were the allday oxtail, lamb chops, fideo with clams and flank steak. This is the finest food I've ever had in the South Bay. Ever. The corkage is reasonable, but the wine list also has a variety of selections at a wide range of price points. My husband and I passed by this restaurant one Sunday morning around brunch time and noticed how great the menu looked. We already had a table waiting for us at another restaurant so we couldn't stay. We went back for dinner a few nights later, but the menu was different. Makes sense since it was dinner time and not brunch. At first glance, I was like "ho-hum" with the menu. Spanish/French style was new to me so I was unfamiliar with the dish combinations and nothing was totally popping out.....until things started to come to the table! I ordered things that I was most familiar with and I was floored on how flavorful everything was. The chicken was to die for! my taste buds were crying with joy. We also couldn't decide on which wine to get so our server got us a taste of each one we were interested in. My husband ordered the hamburger and did not eat the bun. They said that they noticed the bun didn't come out how they would normally serve it so they took it off the bill!! I did notice earlier that someone else ordered the hamburger and did not eat the bun. That is a sign of a great restaurant. One who notices what comes back uneaten and does right with the customer even if they did not complain. I could not finish my chicken dish so I had it boxed to go. I was so thrilled as I remembered this place used to be Zazou and it's from the family group that opened Love & Salt in Manhattan Beach. We made our reservation at 9:00pm, got there and was seated right away. These are the items we ordered: Gildas - Anchovy with pickled peppers & olive; it was interesting in a good way. Potatoes Croquettes with jamon serrano added - This was so good, crispy, not too salty, the paired harissa aioli was on point. I recommend this for your appetizer. Local sautéed dates with manchego cheese - This pair was made in heaven and goes so well together. The dates are local from Palm Spring (thumbs up! I support local CA products). Fideua - Their style is unique; its paella pasta with mussels and squid, squid ink sauce on top. The seafood 100% perfect. The pasta though was overcooked, and we mentioned that to our lovely waitress. The restaurant comped the dish and we decided to order another entree. I rather give them feedback now since its brand new because I love the place than to stay idle. Lamb chops - A must to order and a must to try! The chops were juicy and tender...I'm dreaming of it now... Chocolate Tartuffo - If you're a dark chocolate fan, then direct yourself to this thick, rich, tasty treat. I've driven past Gabi James several times, but didn't have the opportunity to check them out until yesterday. My mom suggested that we dine there after a friend of hers was raving about how delicious the food was. I'm glad that we chose to dine there. It was amazing! We ordered the chorizo potato croquettes as an appetizer, the all day oxtail ragu and filet mignon au poivre as entrees, and the chocolate bread pudding for dessert. All of the dishes we ordered were so flavorful, well seasoned, and cooked to perfection! I would strongly recommend ordering a salad or a side of vegetables if you choose to order the all day oxtail ragu. It needs a fresh element to cut through the oils and heaviness of the dish. My only issue was with the customer service. Although our server was friendly and polite, the service became slow and our table was somewhat neglected once more customers arrived. It took a while to order dessert and get a refill of water. This is because there was only one server working. By the time we were finished, one more server arrived. This is a new place to Redondo Beach.. very hard to get and during the dinner. However I was able to secure a place for me and my daughter are during lunch. I really like the menu and it is very nice and they have a lot of options for all kinds of people. Since I am a vegetarian both me and my daughter we ordered the avocado toast, the pan and jam, and a Caesar salad. All food was delicious and very tasty. However the Caesar salad was exceptionally great. The chef made it with hand torn lettuce, and exchanged the croutons with cheese crisps.. the seasoning just right, and the portions are reasonable. Spectacular dining experience! Had dinner at this beautiful restaurant, and my God did we have a great time. We started with the Anchovy-Wrapped Olives, for a perfect start. Continued to the Shishito Peppers and the Roasted Mushrooms with Egg! Both of which were unbelievably flavorful! For the main dish we shared a Skirt Steak which was cooked to perfection! Zazou, which used to be in this location was great, but I think Gabi James is a definite upgrade! The vibe is European style, the staff is very friendly and the food is spectacular.
