Been there many times and I didn't have any problems but last night. My friend and I went to this place for late dinner. Quickly had a table and got the orders. He brought us a dish of vegetables and 2 cups of water. After that, we were waiting for our meals for so long. There were 3 groups after us and they already got their food but not us. If you like powder base, with msg, and lemon grass, then this is the place for you. We ordered both Bun Bo Hue and Mi quang. The bun bo hue was terrible. The broth is clearly powder based, the amount of toppings given is very little. The broth leans towards more of the salty side. The thing that made me mad the most is the noodles. It is still raw!! It seems like they soak the raw noodles in water over night and then throw hot soup over it. My noodles was more than al dente. For the Mi quang, the only thing they did well was dye the noodle super yellow to trick people to thinking it was egg noodle. The dye was soo good that the pork ribs also turned yellow. The pork ribs have blood marks inside and it was stinky, so you know they do not wash it well. On top of that, they stew the shrimp with their mi quang sauce so the shrimp is cooked to hell!! The shrimp was mushy like apple sauce! I know others talk about service and it is true. This place has a bunch of kids as the staff. Our friends were craving banh canh and highly recommended we come to Ghien Bun Bo. We came in on a Friday afternoon and were quickly seated. While most of us ordered the banh canh, we did have 2 people that had ordered the bun bo hue and shaking beef. While all the dishes were good, the banh canh was truly the star of the show! This place is about a few month new, nice, clean, pleasant. the young wait staff is polite and efficient, sounds like siblings of the same family. Their bun bo is the Southern version of bun bo Hue, way to sweet with excess sugar, also too salty, but lack the depth of bone stock and Hue's unique lemon grass and shrimp paste flavor. The $15.95 bowl is smaller than competition, about the same size as Van's $10 bun bo and 2/3 of Ngu Binh $16 large bun bo. The least expensive drink is a cup of $2 hot tea. There are plenty of protein in the bowl, the shank, tendon and blood curl were cooked to perfection but beef balls were grainy and not chewy. Since the broth was way too sweet and salty, I had difficulties finishing this small bowl. After eating I had a numbing pain in my hearts and the nerves along my spinal column and the back of my neck were tight in knots, agitated for more than half a day, indication of excess MSG or other stimulants in the soup. I was about to order a banh canh tom cua to go just to try it, but knowing how sweet and salty it would be, I decided against it. This place is not worth coming back to. read more
