Talk about a hole in a wall. This hole has been in monterey park for over 20 years ( at least according to the newspaper review it received back in 85'). I went here after a coworker suggested it, he mentioned that it was a great spot to pick up food after a night out since they don't close until late. I wasn't expecting much from the outside appearance but I was expecting the food to be, at the very least, decent. I ordered a few dishes (pan fried dumplings, pork chop noodles, and pork chop rice). Everything seemed like it was dipped in oil. It was pretty disgusting (even for my taste). The rice was salty as hell and the dumplings seemed under cooked. I would definitely save your time and your stomach by visiting some other Asian spot. There are so many in MPK! Go anywhere but here! read more

Good place to eat!!! Open late!!! My wife and I are regulars at this place. Everything is good. We usually have the Shrimp Fried Rice, Fried Chicken, Fried Pork Shop and other items. CASH ONLY. Last night we went to eat and everything was okay until four Asian (mostly Taiwanese)girls who looked like they were exchange students walked in and ordered the "Stinky Tofu". Not sure who invented this dish and my respects for people who eat it but honestly, it smells like PURE FUCKIN' SHIT!!!! Other customers had to get up and open the front door and even the upper windows because the smell was horrible. Worse than when you walk in to take a leak and someone is taking a dump in the public restroom. I did not take any stars off because of that. Again. I respect what people eat and I believe giving 4 stars is okay even I really should give 3/12 but can't. Visit this place and enjoy most of the food. Yas! I came here for Taiwanese noms after schlepping out to nearby Garage and finding out, quite disappointed, that they close earlier than Yelp indicates. My friend had been talking GSK up, too, so I simply walked down the street with two friends to grab a late night dinner on Friday. The restaurant is a hole in the wall located next to VP Tofu King (amazing tofu next door, in other words) in Monterey Park. My friends and I didn't have any trouble getting a table since it was already kind of late, and parking wasn't a problem. We ordered the fried pig intestines, the stir fried Shanghainese rice cakes, and a stir-fried Chinese vegetable. The food came out pretty quickly. I should say that the prices here were very economical; everything was under $10 a dish, which is about SGV lunch prices, but definitely a treat during dinner. The fried pig intestines hit my spot. They were lightly crispy and crunchy on the outside, and a little chewy on the inside. They gave you the salt and pepper dipping powder and the tangy red sauce too. It was exactly how I wanted to start an indulgent weekend! The Shanghainese rice cakes were good, too. They stir-fried it here with a lot of other ingredients (veggies, etc.) beside just the rice cakes, so it was nice to get some variety, and the rice cakes were cooked well - not too soft and not too hard. The veggie was standard, too. Portions weren't huge, but you pay for what you get. Service: One waitress is running around for the whole restaurant (not too big, but still). Let's bump it to a 3.5! The reviewers are right to recommend the pork rice burger! It's not a burger by any means, but I suppose the ground meat is what they're referring to as "burger." Two words: order it. $6.50, good ol' Taiwanese rice dish, a tad too many fatty pieces than I like, but it was good. When you pass the lit restaurants of Monterey Park, you drive through a dark street and stumble upon the only open restaurant that's located next to the laundry mat. The first thought that comes to mind is "G-H-E-T-T-O" but you're in for a pleasant surprise. I've been here a few times now, and I think this hole-in-the-wall Taiwanese restaurant is best after a night of drinking. The service has always been good but it can be really busy on weekends since it opens at 9 PM. I always order the shrimp fried rice, beef noodle soup, and oyster pancake. The fried rice is good but there's so much MSG that makes my stomach churn. The oyster pancake is a pan fried pancake with chopped oysters that's topped with a sweet sauce. Drool! I suggest you come here after drinking because everything tastes damn good and you won't care about how much MSG they add to their food. read more

Good Shine is a great place to go after a night full of moon shine. It's open late especially on weekends from 6pm to 4 am. The food is okay and the prices are reasonable. Most of their dishes are from 5.95-7.95. The portions are small but it's perfect for late night snacking so you can try a bunch of different things without having to be carried out unless you've already passed out at the table. My favorites were... -salt and pepper chicken: Tasty, nice and crispy popcorn like fried chicken. Similar to ones you get at boba shops like Ten Ren but without the red pepper seasoning. It has salt and pepper on the side for dipping. - steamed dumplings were mouth watering and juicy. -stinky tofu: It's fermented tofu that tastes like fried tofu but with a stench that grows on you and somehow becomes charming like some people become after you've been fermented. Most of the items are pretty greasy but they do give you free hot tea to help breakdown the grease. The steamed dumplings were much better than the pan fried. The pan fried ones tasted like they were soggy and were just steamed in grease. It's a small hole in the wall kinda place but it's good for cheap late night eats. read more

Been eating here since before high school. I think this was one of the first Chinese joints in MPk back when there were only a handful... yeah... imagine that. So, they have been through a few different owners and remodels, but the food is consistently good. We used to drive back here every other night from UCLA just to get our Chinese food fix because they are open until like 4am or something. I recommend, the pork fried rice, stinky tofu, Chek-a-mein (basically a mix of stuff thrown into soup noodles), oyster w/egg, pig tongue, marinated seaweed, steamed dumplings, fried intestines, and smoked chicken (you think hickory BBQ was smoky... try this). The owner is pretty cool. You can see him hanging out front smoking by his white Camry about every ten minutes. Talk about a chain smoker. I think he recognizes me now since I go there so often. Had high hopes for this place since a friend recommended it. One star for staying open late. One star for good xiao long bao's with thin skins and alot of juice but that's where the stars stop. The other dishes that we've had here were very subpar. This place is like a HK/Taiwanese fusion place. The stinky tofu smelled promising but had zero taste. Even the pickled lettuce that came with it was lame. Their shrimp fried rice was less than average and the portion was small. Most of their dishes are undersized. The Taiwanese thin noodles with oysters or intestines was rated worst ever by my wife. Doesn't come with cilantro unless you ask. The Lou gen noodles were pretty decent. I'll probably give this place one more chance just because the hours are convenient and I'll order the pork chop noodles cuz they can't mess that up right? read more

This place is life changing. We used to stop by at all the typical Asian cafes after clubbing/drinking, but this became the to-go spot. I was unfortunate to discover that they now close at 2AM so I'm not sure how I'll get to enjoy this place again, but I'm sure I'll find a way. One of my top favorite late night food joints in the 626 area. Open till 4am and ALWAYS much better than getting processed fast food after a night of drinking or just being out. Sometimes I even come here with a friend or two for a midnight snack :P One cook, one helper and one server. The server is such a nice woman and always remembers me and makes sure I get everything I need and quickly. I first discovered this place while doing laundry next door & I'm glad I decided to try it. I've tried many items here but like to stick to my favs: Oyster pancake - love the red sauce, oyster bits, napa cabbage & egg in the gelatinous pancake. Sausage fried rice - you can't go wrong with Chinese sausage, rice is flavored nicely & I love how dry and fried the rice is. It is slightly too oily sometimes but you can ask to use less oil. Stinky fermented tofu - if you like fermented tofu then IMO this is the best place in the area to get it. Comes with a dipping sauce & pickled cabbage. Potstickers - I'm a sucker for potstickers & I like these here. Not the best but still good. Other things that are good: pork rice burger, beef noodle soup, chow mien, pork belly on rice (yummm), fried pork intestines w/salt & pepper to dip (I only eat this when others order it). Been here several times already. And I believe that this is the closest thing I'll get to having authentic Taiwanese food. I always order the oyster pancake, fried intestine, fried chicken (with basil leaves) and their thin noodle with intestine. I highly highly recommend all of these dishes and you wont be disappointed. Yum!! This small restaurant used to be down the street when i lived in the area and I could easily walk there and know I will always enjoy their food. Portions here are small if you come here for a regular dinner. However, I find them perfect for those coming in for a late night meal to recuperate from the night's mayhem. They have a variety of taiwanese food, from noodles to wontons to stir-fry, and even stinky tofu. Quite a number of tables ordered the stinky tofu when I was there, so I assume it must be good. The prices are on the pricier side of things if you compare them to other restaurants, given the portions and sizes are smaller than usual. However, when this is the only place around that serves this type of food in the middle of the night, you would find it to worth every penny! The place is small, and I can imagine it getting really packed. The wall has pictures of their more popular dishes, but the actual menu has a lot more items to offer. i am a HUGE fan of hole in the wall dining and after i came here i realized i had to write a review. A little background info, the new owner/ chef is my mom's friend so we decided to hop in to say hello and grab a quick bite. Its really small and definitely not somewhere to find healthy food. That being said we order a couple things and everything was really good. It reminded me a lot of the street foods that i found in taiwan. The shrimp pancake was delicious and their beef stew with noodles was amazing as well. mmm lets see, well i tried a bunch of things like the ground pork stew with rice and that was as good as it gets, i feel like most restaurants do a good job with that dish. Anyway, all in all i guess the ownership is new, and the fact its open till 4am makes it a 5 star. definitely gonna be somewhere i stop after a long night of drinking! all in all, authentic taiwanese street food don't come here expecting a healthy meal. cause its not HOLE IN THE WALL!! wee my favorite! read more

I like this place! My experience here was great, but maybe not a perfect 5-stars. To be fair, the main dish that I decided to go with (pork chop rice) has many different varieties/ways to be made-- even back in Taiwan. So I guess I shouldn't really have been disappointed that what came on the table wasn't exactly the pork chop I was expecting: it was still good though. We also got fried fish cakes and a plate of fried rice (to share between Josh and me)-- for a comparison of portions, we were both decently full, but not so full that we couldn't grab Half and Half afterwards. I would say that this is more of a hurry-up-and-eat place, more than a family gathering or set-up-a-meal-date-here place. There are only something like 5 tables here, and none of them are two-seaters (so if you are part of a two-seater party, you feel bad taking up the 4-seater tables, which are the only ones available). read more

This place used to be Taiwanese, more authentic than not, but it had steered away from authentic Taiwanese food to more-or-less Asian fusion place that has more Taiwanese influence. The restaurant had been bought... taken over by the previous owner's employee, a skinny gentleman who you'll find almost constantly chain-smoking outside the restaurant. I was looking forward to this as I like Taiwanese food, but it's not that great. I came late at night and am so glad I have GPS because I would never have found it. The outside sign light isn't on, but it's next to a 24/7 laundry mat that is brightly lit so look for that. The lady said hi and told me to sit and gave me the menu. I ordered the pork rice soup and some veggies. She speaks English. Plus the menu has numbers so you can always order by that. Unfortunately, there's no description of the food itself so I relied on the pictures on the wall to order. The pork soup smelled like it was processed chicken stock. I was like uh oh but when I tasted it, it reminded me of the instant noodle broth but with pepper. It came with small pieces of pork, chopped onions, cabbage, carrots, rice, and Chinese mushrooms. It was okay. The veggie dish was oily, had too much soy sauce, and was a bit overcooked so just okay. Service was decent. I wouldn't run to go back but wouldn't mind trying other items. A plus that it's open late. It's quite tiny inside--six booths only. It wasn't busy when I went. They have free parking lot. read more

Just came here last night for a very late dinner. I had a Taiwanese food craving and thanks to Yelp, I found Good Shine! They are open to 4am on the weekends and 3 am on the weekdays. I got the lu ruo fan (minced pork rice), ji si fan (shredded chicken rice), sauteed A tsai (veggies), and the tian bu la (fried fish cake). Everything was really tasty especially the two rice dishes. The shredded chicken rice is definitely worth trying if you are going here for the first time. The service is very attentive. They do not have bobas or desserts which probably would've made this place one of the best all-inclusive Taiwanese joint, but nevertheless, I will still be returning to satisfy those annoying Taiwanese food cravings in the future. read more

I like coming here as an alternative to tasty garden when I use to work late at night. It a great tiny hole in the wall that despite the limited seating, it always juts has enough room more me and my friends at any given moment. my favorite things to get there are the pork hamburger rice and the braised pork belly in rice. SUPER OILY but idk, it's late night and I'm hungry. I also get the stinky tofu and it's one of stinkiest I have had. Super pungent and very popular as I see almost every table with it. The crowd here are late night tea shop workers, with some clubber sprinkled here and there (they can get annoying). Super authentic: they serve kidneys with ginger and broccolli...mmmm!! It was made perfectly and I felt like I was helping to nourish my body. I cannot believe that I never tried this place, it was so delicious. I need to try their soups. They have super late hours but they are worth the calories and I never say that for anything but when you need food to nourish your body, come here. I want to try their chicken soup, I need Taiwanese comfort food at times because eating great food with people fills me with happiness. Place is small with limited seating, owner/waitress is super kind and the food is just amazing! Such comforting food. My all time favorite is their xiao long bao, and che zai mi fun? On the menu I believe it is just check A noodle soup. Its the best best I've ever eaten! Filled with so many goodies. The xiao long baos are juicy and flavorful, each bite is heaven.
