Pei Wei's food is decent, but I did not like the fast food ambiance. You order at the counter and get your own silverware. Rock n roll music is blaring. Most of the table and chairs have hard non-cushioned surfaces, although there were a couple small booths with cushioned seating. My husband and I ordered Thai curry chicken, orange chicken, and chicken lettuce wraps. I especially liked the lettuce wraps, although all three dishes were good. The only reason i went to Pei Wei was because i had a coupon. I haven't been there in a while because the food just went from a 10 to a 1 so i figured i'd give it another chance. The only reason why i gave it a 2 star was because of the server who was so nice and accommodating. I placed my order at 430, thinking that i placed it for 4:00. I got there at 3:55 and asked the server if they could go ahead and prepare it while i wait. No problem. Within 7 min, it was done. When i got home, the meat for the lettuce wrap tasted like it had been sitting on the counter. You would think it would be piping hot since i waited for it. The fried rice was not hot either and it was soggy, bland and no flavor. I Tried to add soy sauce to it, nothing. Ended up throwing it away. I tried my grandson's honey seared chicken and that also tasted like it had been sitting on the counter. It wasn't hot at all. No wonder i got my food within 7 min. Never going back again. We visited after a two year absence and I was surprised! The menu has been updated with a few extra special dishes and with multi meals. I went to try the Mongolian chicken and it was very good! Pei Wei on Bell Road in the congested business district of Surprise, AZ near Grand Avenue is very hard to find. It lacks signage on Bell Road and the restaurant itself faces a hidden empty parking lot ... To top it off the location's listed 623-546-6868 phone number didn't work!!! No wonder there was no one there at noon. Zero lunch crowd. Unfortunately, I didn't find this out until after I already ordered two meals online for $25. Pei Wei is one of my favorite Asian restaurant in the West Valley/Surprise. A young lady working there named Valerie (sp) was SO polite and accommodating. She graciously explained some of the new items they have added to the menu. She absolutely is an asset to the company. Her customer service was tremendous with a smile. I picked up takeout for two and after this visit I will not go back. We got the orange chicken with brown rice and honey chicken with white rice. The brown rice was not cooked - the grains were skinny and very hard. The orange chicken had no sauce so the entire dish was dry. The honey chicken and white rice was all rice and barely a serving for a child. Again no sauce making the entire dish dry. I wouldn't recommend take out. Really? Just don't. Ate at a Pei Wei a few years ago and thought it was mediocre. It hasn't improved. I'd compare it to the McDonalds of Asian food but I think some people like the fries at McDonalds. If you're on Bell Rd in Surprise AZ and just need some Asian food, there is a Saigon Kitchen near which is fine and there is V NAM Pho. Both are preferable. This place didn't stand out to me when I first tried it 10 or so years ago, but gave it another go because I had an urge for Asian food and wanted to try one of the new tofu menu items. Meh. It's decent. It's better than other equivalent Asian places wasting space in mall food courts or down the street that no longer serve tofu. Sadly, you don't get a lot of food for the price, but it's an edible sample. So up until tonight I have had no issues with this location and have been happy. I placed an online order around 6:12 PM to be picked up ASAP. I sent my husband and son over to get it. When they got there about 10 minutes or so after I placed the order, my husband waited around 10 minutes and then was finally able to ask about our order. It could not be found. Turns out it was given to someone else. They had to remake our order and I believe he only got an apology. It is now close to 7 PM and they are finally heading home. I find it inexcusable that you would give somebody's order to someone else without even checking. I am giving three stars because of this incident, poor Customer Service according to him, and because of the fact that they didn't even offer to maybe give us a free meal or deduct something off of the bill. My wife wanted to try this place for awhile now. One of her brothers friends used to be a manager of one in Colorado too. Tonight we decided to try it out. I placed my order online. Easy process. My wife went with an order of Chicken Lo Mein and I went with Sesame Chicken/Steak with fried rice as well as an egg roll and 2 pot stickers. Total for everything was $24.80 after tax. I drove down and picked up my food. The manager their was friendly, rang me up real quick and I was out the door in no time. This bag was heavy as hell too! Here is how everything tasted..................... Chicken Lo Mein- Only had a little of this. Good noodles, good white meat chicken. My wife liked it. Sesame Chicken/Steak- I decided to try out 2 kinds of meat. They let you mix and match which is cool...they charge you for the highest priced item. I substituted fried rice for white rice (.99 cents extra). This was touted as soy citrus glaze, red bell peppers, onions, scallions, ginger, garlic and chile paste and sesame seeds. It was just alright. The flavors didn't really do much for me. It was a tad spicy from the chile paste but overall it was kind of bland. I had some pieces of steak/chicken that were a bit funky too. I would definitely try out a different dish next time here...if there is a next time ;-). The fried rice was good! Egg Roll- Eh. It was an egg roll. Nothing fantastic about it but it tasted fine. It came with a sweet mustard dipping sauce which was pretty tasty. Usual fillings of pork, veggies etc. Deep Fried Pot Stickers- I got 2 of these things. They were good. Small but good. Straight pork filling in the middle of them. Overall it was just alright. I will say that they give you a GRIP of food. The 2 entrees we got could have easily fed 1-2 more people. For $24.80 it was a great value. The food just wasn't the type of thing that you would ever crave and keep you coming back though. While I was eating my meal, all I could think of were better Chinese food places I have had before....wishing I was eating them instead. Both came with 4 tiny pieces of chicken and ton of rice and little vegetables (had to order a side with the orange chicken). Kids were still hungy after eating as they don't like to eat just plain rice. I ordered Kung Pao Chicken with extra chicken and lettuce cups. Lettuce cups were all stuck together and couldn't get any to work as a cup. No extra chicken either. I was really counting on the extra protein. At the end of the meal we ended up all eating leftovers from the fridge because we didn't get much food. I'm so disappointed in Pei Wei. The lettuce wraps are in the menu as a "Sharable" yet the amount of meat I received could barely qualify as a kids meal. It's much less than half of the amount it used to be. Even while going through photos here in other reviews, it's apparent the portion size has been cut down to a fraction of what it used to be. Sadly, the lettuce didn't impress either. It was frozen and got soft, slimy, and soggy as soon as the warm filling was placed in it. I ordered (and paid for) extra lettuce (since there was usually way more meat filling when I ordered before) but that was shoved haphazardly into tiny boxes so it was all broken. Also, I could be wrong, but I thought the lettuce wraps came with a sauce... I didn't get any sauce with them. In the end I reached out to another restaurant in the area to send over a couple more orders of their lettuce wraps since Pei Wei closed by the time I got my order (I had people to feed!!) and they were awesome. This location offers online ordering and in app ordering. Apparently you can also walk in with your family and place an order which doesn't seem to follow COVID guidelines. Plus they were running so far behind that there were 10-12 people inside. My order took 20 minutes longer than the ready by time. They just throw your bag of food on a shelf and don't bother to call out your name. One guys order had been sitting there for 20 minutes. I find this inexcusable. It doesn't take much effort to call out names. I only gave three stars because of the customer service. The food was actually quite good. I love Pei Wei. They have great dishes. I absolutely do not love this Pei Wei location. I have gone here three times now to give them a solid chance, and each time I have had the exact same experience: chewy meat and crunchy rice. It is extremely disappointing as I have had consistently positive experiences at other locations, and this location has been consistently poor. I also ordered lettuce wraps this time, and the lettuce included was hilariously and unusably small to make lettuce wraps with. I've never seen lettuce wraps with such small pieces of lettuce included. I will not be visiting this location again after three solid tries. Last week without an explanation my mobile order was canceled after being submitted and paid for. Today I walked in to place a take-out order. They have a second entrance for take-out orders so I went in and immediately noticed that the person at the register didn't acknowledge that someone had come in...first red flag. After two other customers walked in after me, I politely said "excuse me" to let her know I was there and she turned around stunned to realize that a live person was standing in the waiting area. She took my order and I sat quietly playing on my phone as one does looking forward to the deliciousness that is Kung Pao chicken! More and more people walked in...got their food...and left. This happened about 8 times before I began to wonder..."does the person at the register realize I'm still here?...Could she have so easily forgotten about the me? No, can't be.", I said to myself. Well...to my dismay, this is exactly what happened. By then we were pushing past 45 minutes and it's at that moment I realized...I'm not getting any Kung Pao today. I could feel the frustration building up, but being rude is simply not the answer in this situation. So, I simply stood up, asked for a refund and went to Ono's Hawaiian BBQ.
