I think it would be more fitting to call this the Sh*te Shack. It's junky fast food that's way over priced. But the Lemmings are standing in line like its the grand opening of some Gordon Ramsey restaurant in Las Vegas. The only reason I even had to endure this gastro intestinal castrophe was the wife and I were out shopping with our grand children contingent, and we needed something convenient and affordable. Convenient it was, but affordable it was not. A $4 hot dog with a stale bun and what looked like a thin piece of beef jerky for the dog... seriously? The burgers are $10 and everything is al la carte. For comparison.... In N Out Burger is easily less than price and the burgers and fries are better. This is what burger dreams are made of! I'm a die hard fan of a good ole burger and fries meal. Like, it can't get any better than that for me. I've heard some pretty great things about Shake Shacks in general, so imagine my surprise to see they had one in the very town I was visiting. Not knowing when I would have an opportunity like this again, I knew we had to go. First, let me say that this restaurant is in a great location. The only down side was the fact that the birds were out in masses the night we visited (and were very loud and chatty) but other than that, the location is great. The night was cool so we opted to sit on the patio which ended up being a really cool choice. The restaurant itself was very clean and well kept, as were the restrooms. Now, on to the good part...the burger! After placing our order, I looked behind the young man who helped us at the very moment a cook smashed some ground meat into a party on the grill. Instant mouth water!!! Hand smashed patties...what, what!? Omg! Our burgers came up hot and fresh and ready to eat! We also ordered the fries. Now, typically neither my husband or I are huge crinkle fry fans, but this was the exception. They were fried to perfection and I couldn't stop eating them. We topped off our meal with a black and white Shake. That's basically a vanilla shake with fudge topping poured over it and whip cream on top. Tasted like I was drinking little bits of heavens. The only thing that makes me sad is that there is no Shake Shack where I live. If they ever bring one close to me idk how I could ever get a burger from anywhere but here. I've mentioned before that I am 100% a walking cliche yes? Good, so I'll be real and say I've wanted to try Shake Shack ever since they were featured in a movie and countless Food Network tv shows. Why? Mostly so I could tell people I'd tried it. Plus, they originated in NYC so they had to be cool. I always thought I would have to brave the ominous line in Central Park before getting my chance until word spread that one was coming to Austin. We gave the crowds time to die down before going and walked right in sans line. We seem to have incredible luck trying new burger joints as the same thing happened to us at Hopdoddy, but I digress. This new location is squeaky clean and ran like a well oiled machine. There is a separate line for desserts, if you order wine/beer you have the option to get it with your meal or beforehand, and customers are given a buzzer so they can grab a seat without crowding around the same spot while waiting for food. While it's on the more expensive side of fast food, everything we tried (minus the meh fries) seemed worth the few extra bucks. I got the single shack hamburger without cheese and added their special sauce, lettuce, and tomato. The bread was soft and didn't get spongy the way it does at In n Out after sitting a while. The patty was high quality and also delicious, albeit a tad overly salty. My husband got a double patty of their current burger special which has cheese, bacon, and caramelized onions. So yum. We waited maybe ten minutes for our food and inhaled all of it in what seemed like 20 seconds. We couldn't leave without trying dessert though so we got back in line for a coffee shake and the Austin exclusive Uchi concrete. That concrete is TO DIE FOR! I had no idea what to expect but it was heavenly with vanilla custard, Uchi & Uchiko miso hazelnut blondie, and swirls of huckleberry jam. Tart, salty, and sweet with chunks of chewy blondie bites = perfection. A percentage of the purchase for the concrete goes to the Boys and Girls clubs of Austin too so consider yourself obligated. I was genuinely stoked to try the new Shake Shack at the Domain and compare it with South Lamar! So here we go! 1. ...(well, wait, that's the same thing). 2. ...(whew, brought all my credit cards). 3. ...(should've borrowed a dog). 4. ...(pretty sure this Shake Shack is bigger, but I suck at space gauging). ************************* Okay, that's not gonna work. I am starting to believe the single ShackBurger is my favorite cheeseburger, because it's the perfect size for me and tastes great. But I pretty much can take or leave everything else. The best part of the "Uchi-konkrete" concoction is it's the least expensive thing ever associated with Uchi, and of course this is all subjective. 4.5 stars. I finally had the Shake Shack experience and I believe the hype. Being from Houston, Shake Shack will arrive home soon but I had heard all about Shake Shack for years. I'm spending a couple days in Austin and found a Shake Shack seven minutes away by foot so made my way. When I think of the Austin burger ladder, Hopdoddy is high up there so I will compare the two along with my other friend In'N'Out. Hopdoddy is all about interesting combinations of toppings, flavors, and sauces while using quality, natural ingredients. Shake Shack is a lot more simplistic like In'N'Out. You do have more options at Shake Shack (without taking the secret menu into account), but I went with a single bacon cheeseburger with cheese fries and a half half (half tea, half lemonade). The burger, while small, was fantastic. Loved the bun and the shake sauce (thousand island-esque). The cheese fries were a good-sized portion and I loved their melted cheese (which was more like a white cheese). The fries are crinkle cut and were good but I felt like a few were undercooked. My Arnold Palmer was so-so. While Shake Shack doesn't have inventive burgers, they do a damn good job at a classic cheeseburger. That means something. The service is friendly and the restaurant was super clean. Gave me more of a Cali vibe with their sustainable decor but they are a New York chain. I actually returned a second time the same day with a friend because she wanted a burger but I was too full. Had enough juice to try their vanilla custard in a cone which was good, thick and creamy like custard should me. Come to Houston Shake Shack, I'm now ready for you! read more

I have have been to the South Lamar location and was excited to have a Shake Shack open up North. One big difference I noticed while when the Lamar location opened they kept a line out the door. This new location at the Domain was quick and easy to order. They have a cool dog friendly patio equipped with a bocce ball court. The inside has plenty of seating and TVs showing the football games. My favorite burger at ShakeShack is their single burger with mustard. The meat is all-natural, hormone free, antibiotic free 100% angus beef burger and totally worth it in my book! On a side not their classic hamburger clocks in at 360 calories if anyone is counting. I eat rather healthy for the most part so when I indulge in menu items like burgers and fries my expectations are sky high and so far ShakeShack has not disappointed. This visit I opted for the ShackBurger which comes with lettuce, tomato, cheese and their signature ShackSauce. I also enjoyed a glass of their Shack White wine from Napa Valley. I enjoyed my burger which was perfectly cooked with a touch of pink in the middle with fresh veggies but the ShackSauce is a bit too much for me. I like the taste of the quality beef so I will definitely skip the ShackSauce next time. They support local in several ways. They partner with local nonprofits. Austin ShakeShacks also offer local menu items to include Texas wines & beers. They also collaborate to make a killer burger topped with Lockhart sausage & an Uchi-koncrete dessert. I had a strawberry shake, a house made lemonade and a double cheeseburger. The burger meat is the thin style and has those neat crispy edges. I asked for jalapenos but they did not have them but instead gave me another type of whole pepper, which actually went pretty well. After seeing the cheese fries, I wanted THAT! However, as I had to go to another meal that evening, I stayed with my original order. The place was really clean and the employees efficient. I was quite surprised as I am not typically a chain-gang member, but it was good. It's burgers. It's in the Domain. It's hype. It's... basically everything I would normally avoid. BUT Elyse L. wrote an amazing review that made me want to try all the things and so I had to eat my words and make the trek over here to do just that. And it was pretty darn good. I went with a single Shackburger with no lettuce and shared some fries with my boyfriend. The burger was pretty good! I liked the bun and the sauce they put on it was tasty and they didn't drown the burger in it, so it didn't drip all over me while I was eating. The patty had a lot of flavor, even though it was on the thin side. Only downside to it being thin is then you don't really get the medium rare thing going, but it was still delicious. The fries were good, too. Nice and crispy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside and a good amount of salt, too. I also got a regular 50/50, which is half iced tea and half homemade lemonade. It was DELICIOUS. I would come back just for that and I'd make it a large next time. If you like that sort of thing, definitely give theirs a try. My boyfriend got the Shackmeister, which is a beer brewed specifically for Shake Shack by Brooklyn Brewing. The beer was decent - perfectly drinkable with no standout flavors. It would be a good lunch beer, if you're in the mood for that or your work allows it. Along with the food, I have to admit I was a sucker for the decor. I liked the design on the cups, on the paper on the tray, on the walls, basically on everything. It was all very cute and right up my alley. Shake Shack is also dog friendly and you can tie your pup up at one of the doggy waiting stations, if needed. I had the shrooms burger because they do not have any other non-beef selections. I am not sure what cheese do you use for their cheese fries but I could do without that cheese any given day. Went to the Domain location for a Wed night dinner w/friends and had their smokestack burger, order of crinkle cut fries, and 50/50 (lemonade/iced tea). My first experience w/SS was the 8th Ave location in NYC and maybe this is what gave me the "OMG this place is amazing!" first time effect that made it seem better than it was. My burger was fine and the bacon on it was crispy and delicious; the fries are some of my favs; and the drink...well, half and half has never been my thing, so I think I might spring for a shake next time and have my lactaid at the ready (I'm mildly lactose intolerant thus I pick my battles selectively). The thing is, for a hamburger, fries, and an Arnold Palmer, I think $13.15 is a bit much. For $2 more I could have gone to HopDoddy, which...let's be honest, this place isn't even in the same playing field. I am sad to say, but I think my NYC Shake Shack illusion has become a delusion. IMHO Shake Shack is one of the best chain restaurants around these days. It has always been high quality and delicious, and they serve beer. I typically don't like hamburgers, but I make an exception for Shake Shack. I was pleasantly surprised by the local twist at the Austin Domain location where I had the Lockhart Link Burger that adds a topping of a grilled Kreuz Market jalapeño cheese link, a delicious touch. My honey has been wanting to check out this place for a while, and since we don't live down south anymore, we decided to check out the Domain location. I love the decor, lots of exposed beams, textured walls, bla bla bla. I honestly wish I was as impressed with the food. I got the Chicago dog and my honey got the special burger they were offering for the day (forgot the name already). He also got a side of their cheese fries and coffee milkshake. I would have enjoyed the hot dog if the bun didn't fall apart one bite in. I expect eating a hot dog to be a little messy, but damn! The fries look like they're Ore-ida fries covered in cheap American cheese. The burger was okay, but there are so many better burger/sandwich places around town. The milkshake had just a hint of coffee and wasn't that good either. Overall, my disintegrating hot dog was the best thing on the plate. Let that sink in. This place is all hype. If you do stop by, you won't have a terrible burger, but it won't be worth your money either. If they want to "bring New York to Texas" they need to do better! read more

Yuuummmm! Maybe it was because I had low expectations from others' reviews. Or maybe because I had just eaten a PTerry's burger earlier this week that was less than satisfactory. My Shackburger (basically their version of a cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato) tasted extra good today at this new Domain location. Like, melt-in-your-mouth, "what did they put in this thing?!" good. For parking, don't try to fight the Macy's shoppers. Go straight to the "side" of the Shake Shack building (i.e. the very, very back of the Macy's lot) where there is pretty decent spaces available. Also, in terms of customer service, a big shoutout to the great staff they've hired. They were very pleasant to be around, went the extra mile to help out (ex: they heard me telling my friend that I was going to get more water and they volunteered to get me some!), and never made me feel like another faceless customer even during busy hours. TL;DR: The South Lamar location is hip/trendy but this one in the 'burbs is still worth checking out. read more

On a Sunday around noon the line at the counter took forever (actually about 15 minutes ... can you believe it?). The staff seemed unfamiliar with their jobs. One cashier wandered away from her post to do something that involved 3 other people. The only remaining cashier waved his hand at me to me to stay away as he beckoned over someone in the Shakes-only line (he was there by mistake, waiting for his daughter in the real line). The third cashier station was repeatedly visited by a woman who didn't operate it. So it needs better management. I paid a surprisingly large bill (about $15) for a double burger, fries, and an iced tea. (I would hope for something like this to be around $8-$11) And now I have a pager and another wait. The cashier said "there's water around the corner". In most burger joints I can get my iced tea to sip as I wait. After a long time the pager rings and I ask the lady at the counter -- Order 51? Paul? she says. Listen we can keep it to order numbers here. I receive a metal tray with my burger, fries, and my iced tea. I have to navigate the choke-point by the bathroom to get a straw (come on, really?), napkins, and ketchup. Luckily, the burger was very good. I mean it's not that much different from any other good burger joint like P. Terry's or a local diner (e.g. Cafe Java or Jim's Restaurant). It is a LOT more expensive than P.Terry's (essentially double). Also the iced tea had no ice in it. This is bizarre to me. I will probably never go back. Although I am curious about the hot dogs ... As a Midwesterner, I have been craving a good Chicago dog like nobody's business since I arrived in Austin. I heard rumors that Shake Shack makes a reasonable facsimile with their "Shack-ago Dog." So, I tried it, and yes! It's pretty good. It's not Chicago, but what is? What impressed me more was the beautiful, sleek industrial chic environs, the really cute doggy amenities (a "parking" station outside, as well as some items on the menu), outdoor amusements like ping pong and cornhole ... plus some tasty looking custard that I'm going to have to try next time when I have a few calories to spare. read more

Didn't get a shake this time, but the custard looks really good too. Line wasn't even that long maybe 10-15 min tops on a Saturday at 12:30. Let me start this review prior to getting food. Neat building. Good architecture. It's not particularly busy here at 1:30 on a Thursday afternoon. So I am surprised I've waited 15 minutes and still no burger. And, you sit and wait without your drink. Sure was thirsty. Got burger. Really good. Fries are good too, crispy but not overdone. It would be good to have a smaller order or 1/2 order (I got the small fries as it was - for $3). No drink machine. So for refills you need to ask. A bit chick-fil-a'ish. But I guess acceptable. It would be nice though for $2.25 that their small drink would hold more. Also when I got the refill, they have me a whole new cup. That makes me think they really don't give free refills, as that seems expensive and hard to track inventory of soda usage/sales. But, perhaps that's how they do it. Overall food quality wins out over the other things I've noted. But I will only come again when I have more time to eat and enjoy the place. read more

Definitely one of the better options for the current trend of the so-called "better burger" chains. Stopped by here on Friday evening and came away impressed overall. One thing I noticed is that the in restaurant menu is much more extensive than the website indicates. There were several local burger options, including one topped with bbq sausage from Kreuz Market in Lockhart. And there were options to customize a burger to your liking as well. And that doesn't even cover the frozen custard options, which neither mom nor I had the appetite for. Burger. Excellent. She had a double cheeseburger and I had a bbq bacon cheeseburger. The ingredients were about the best quality that I've had at a quick service chain. The Nieman Ranch bacon was especially noteworthy with great flavor and a noticeable crunch. The burger was also juicy without being a mess. The cheese was melted well and the bun had been toasted. If I had any complaint, and it's minor, the bbq sauce had a strong mustard flavor that took away from a very good burger. The fries were among the best I've had. Imagine if the old crinkle cut frozen fries from our youth weren't frozen and were actually fried correctly. That's exactly what these were. The drinks were also good. There was a huge variety of teas, beers on tap, and soft drinks, including Abita root beer on tap. Amazingly, free refills on all soft drinks, including the tap root beer. The service was also excellent. The lady taking our order was friendly and patient with the two of us, who'd never ordered there before. We were asked several times by roaming staff as to how our experience was. The drink refills were easily done and the restaurant was spotlessly clean. Great food just amazing! I love the cheese fries and the meat couldn't be better... so why not 5 stars? The prices. The prices are a little steap. For a small drink, burger, and cheese fries, you're looking at $16 which is restaurant prices. However, I've been here twice and both times were amazing. The online order system is awful, took my money and refused to refund me when they cancelled my order. I understand COVID has made it a hard time for everyone and if they had to cancel my order I'm okay with that, but now it's holding my money for 3-5 business days. No one to call to talk to about, only an email that says they'll reach out in 4-5 business days. Terrible customer service. Customer service is only so-so here, but the burgers are great! This was my first time here and I tried the Shack Stack and also had a salted caramel shake: both were excellent. They have a great patio area and games (such as ping pong) for the kids/kids at heart to play while others dine. I'm sure I'll be back at some point to try the other menu options. read more

Altogether this is a nice, comfortable environment. Stepped up to the counter and the lady helping us was kind and friendly and walked us through the options. I got a double cheeseburger with bacon, my lady a fried chicken sandwich. The wait took a solid 5-10 minutes at 2pm on a Thursday but it didn't feel overly excessive (though I wonder how long the wait would be in a lunch rush). My burger arrived and I was surprised to see it on such a small bun. The patties were relatively thick (1/4lb each) but small. However, it was pretty tasty. The bacon was good, slightly crispy but thankfully not overcooked. The cheese fries (crinkle cut) were good as well. The cheese was like a combination of Velveeta mixed with melted cheddar. No complaints there for me. Overall I was satisfied but I think it was a bit pricey. For two sandwiches, a large and small drink and one order of cheese fries it was almost $30, similar to five guys or other fancy burger joints. I enjoy these places from time to time but also just don't see how it costs so much. If you like these types of burger joints, it's a must try at least once. First time trying this. My hubby stood in line for two hours IN New York for these & he said they're alright. Now this is my first time ever and I see why he said what he said about it. First the ambience is cool, dim lights at night, kind of like a hang out place so it doesn't feel like a fast food restaurant . Second, the burger is TINY!!! I'm not originally from Texas, but I've grown into Texas sized food (mentally & physically-ha). For the price, this burger ain't worth it. It was good, but I think my burger could afford to be bigger. Also, we got regular fries... The cheese fries were delish so I do recommend that over the reg, but it's pricey too. Third; I did enjoy my burger. I got the shroom burger and just FYI there's no meat in it. Two stars because the food was good, but I just don't think it's worth the price. read more

This place is the definition of mediocre. I had about 3 people in front of me and so far I've waited about 10 mins for a burger and fries. It's rare that I'm so bored that the thing I think of doing is to write a review of a place. For about 9 bucks you can get a tiny burger with crinkle fries. I would've given 3 stars but now I'm just depressed looking at the burger. Okay. Now that I've eaten, I think I'm going to give the place one star now. The burger was...soggy. Like the bread was just a soggy mess. The patty wasn't even good. There's more flavor in a big Mac. Also if I'm going to pay this much for a burger with cheese, can the cheese be cheddar and not American? Should've just went to McDonald's. Showed up around 8 on a Tuesday. It wasn't busy at all. Some of the staff were chillin like villains. I ordered the shack burger and some cheese fries. The order came out to around 9 bucks. The food was pretty good. Fries and cheese were really tasty and pretty crispy. The burger was cooked medium. I didn't expect that at all. Is this fast food?!?! The interior was very nice. The tvs were showing sports and they had beer on tap. I could see this as a good chill spot to throw down some beers and burgers. I enjoyed my visit and I will be back! The only thing I though was a little unpleasant was it took a little longer than expected to prepare my food and it's located kind of deep inside the domain, next to dicks sporting goods. read more

Astonishingly underwhelming. Burger: Too much grease and cheese made the burger a bit runny, and the patties could've use a pinch more salt. The meat seems fresh but the flavor didn't impress. Fries: Fresh by fast food restaurant standards, but not as good as say Five Guys, or animal style fries at In-n-Out. Price: Everything costs twice as much as at P Terry's or In-N-Out, but definitely not twice as good. I spent $20 on a double burger, fries, soda, and a shake, same as I would at Hopdoddy (undoubtably better in every item in every way except for the line), which begs the question: what's the point? read more

I was impressed with their south Lamar location, so thought of trying this Domain one. Since it's a chain restaurant so the menu is pretty standard for all of its location. I personally found a huge difference in the mushroom burger which I had tried earlier. This location had just too much of cheese stuffed in it. It lacked in the flavor and was very basic, had no order back appeal at all. Else the place was tidy and organized, definitely has a lot of potential to improve. read more
