Two Boots is an old school pizza counter located where the East Village transitions into Alphabet City. This location is apparently across the street from where the mini chain first started over 30 years ago, and pays homage to its roots by featuring local artists and partnering with neighborhood institutions. They certainly get a boost from comedy fans at UCB next door. I came in with a few friends for a late night slice a few weeks ago. The Luisaida, name checking both hometown hero Luis Guzman and the historic Puerto Rican Loisaida neighborhood nearby, was calling my name with its chorizo and hot pickled peppers. Good flavor and not too spicy. The chorizo was a bit tough but otherwise I had no complaints. Pizza can get pretty pricey depending on the toppings; this ain't no dollar slice. I love that they have specialty pies named after some of my favorite pop culture characters. Seriously, Mr. Pink? Newman? The Dude? These are solid choices. I'm not sure I could be a bigger fan of the Big Lebowski. But kitsch only gets you so far when it comes to food. I came in with a lady friend* recently, and got a whole pie. Even fresh, it just wasn't that good. The sauce has a nice tang, and the cornmeal/semolina crust is novel, but I don't love it. A large specialty pie will run you about 24 bones, or clams or whatever you call them. At that price, you just have much better options. I LOVED this place and the pizza. If you look around carefully I think you can see my heart floating around which I left there. I'll be back for sure. I love crunchy, crisp crusts and loads of taste in each bite of my pizza. If you're with me, then go here. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A lot of the negative comments are based on quality control, which I can't speak to because Two Boots is great every time I go. (I never order, just dine in-house.) Being from Texas and having visited New Orleans a bunch, I can say this place is a true gem. Scan through the menu and try all the crazy cool combinations. The Bayou Beast (shrimp, crawfish, andouille sausage, jalapenos) is a must. You don't see pizza like this all the time, folks! Also, the East Village location is our favorite Two Boots! A typical date night for us is to go here and then a show at UCB. My boyfriend loves that they have coffee on nitro (can't seem to find that at other pizza places). read more

With all the hype about this pizza place I expected a bit more. The man taking the order didn't look at us once and seemed to be a little preoccupied. Mr Pink was delicious, but the "fan" favorite, the Bird fell short of impressing me. The chicken seemed to look a bit hairy. I do however like the fact that you can rent movies in the shop. From what I saw they had a very good selection to choose from. The decor was interesting although they could do something about the wobbly booths. I thought it was terrible. I'm being kind giving it one star. The garlic knots were round pieces of bread (not pizza dough) with no taste of garlic. They were fluffy and had almost no taste other than oil. The pizza had a picante sauce that tasted off. The extra items I ordered (onion and sopressata) were not placed properly on the pizza ( I ordered half and half) and the specialty pizza I ordered did not come with the listed toppings from the menu description of the pizza. The sopressata was terrible. The taste of the pizza overall was really awful. I will say that the crust edges were decent so I ended up just eating that. Ordered through seamless and i already expect the delivery time to be 75 minutes since the delivery estimate was stated before ordering. After about 1 hour and 30 minutes later no pizza in sight so i gave them a call and the guy said there was no order for it. I was transferred to a manager then they realized my order was automatically confirmed in their system so they didn't even see it and he promised to get me my pizza in 30 minutes. When it finally did come, the pizza appeared a little burnt and did not taste as good as the other time I ordered delivery. We had the medium cleopatra jones pizza. The pizza here is of a different style, as is their store. It's not only a place for pizza, but also...VHS rentals? What? They use cornmeal straight into their crust. I don't think I prefer that style but the pizza was still good. We got: Larry Tate- spinach, plum tomatoes, and fresh garlic Newman- sopressa and sweet italian sausage on white A/C ftw! I had the "Newman" Pizza. Slice of pizza with cheese, pepperoni and Italian Sausage. The pizza could have used MORE oozing cheese, but I guess that's how they're made. Their pizza selection is named after famous TV characters. Hence the Newman from Seinfeld. It's not a bad pizza to have if you're really starving on a rainy day. I inhaled the pizza while people watching on the booth. Had salad on the side too. I just realize that Two Boots is a chain and has a location in LA. Hmm...dare I check it out? What good is a place with "vegan options" if they keep running out of pizza and then when you order, they look at you like you're asking for something foreign when you ask for the vegan pizza. They ADVERTISE 7 DIFFERENT TYPES OF PIZZA! The guy there (Andy), at the LES location, wanted to make a 14 dollar personal pie. I came there for a slice of pizza, not a pie that is 3 to 4 times that. FINALLY went to much anticipated Two boots, only to be disappointed with the pizzas. Boohoo. So, I went here, this past weekend and had 4 pizzas with my friend. The Bird, Grandma Bess, Sicilian, and Mr. Pink (all a little under $4/slice) So, I don't understand what the fuss about THE BIRD is. it has a weird aftertaste (probably from the cheese) and personally, not a big fan of EXCESSIVE amount of cornmeal on the pizza bread. Disappointed, I give into Grandma Bess. I don't even know what to say for that pizza. When you bite into it, there is this slight unappealing sensation. It's not a crunch you get from thin pizza, or soft cushion you get from thick breaded pizza. It's a slight mush texture with a surprise attach of a crunch. Unusually unpleasant. The cheese, I wasn't a big fan of either. Wanted a little more olive oil or something for moisture. Sicilian was thick and soft. Just like any other, wasn't too special and probably the best thing was Mr. Pink. The chicken pieces and pretty good sauce. The only disappointment was that the slice was pretty small (Well, it's about a regular Papa John's slice size, but Honestly, I didn't pay 99cent for a slice, so I was hoping it was a bit bigger). Overall, I was disappointed. The only reason this place got 2 stars instead of 1 was because of Mr. Pink. Also, I see what approach they were trying to go- healthier, better ingredients. However, I think the execution failed a little. Massive amounts of topping or exotic new flavors DOES NOT ALWAYS mean better tasting, it may sometimes mean confusion and weird sensation... just like the feelings I experiences at two boots.... read more

If you're in the mood for pizza, Two Boots is always a good choice. There's a wide array of options, even for the gluten free folk and it's always what it's supposed to be. I will say for freshness and experience i would recommend the UES location over the east village location. Walked in for a slice on my way home for dinner and the employees couldn't be bothered to up to even say hello. Customer service is a big one for me. I can live with something that I didn't particularly enjoy, or something not being what I expected but I draw the line at poor courtesy. As a customer looking to spend money at an establishment the bare minimum of "hello" is at least expected. read more

Fun and eclectic location to get interesting versions on the classic New York pizza. Many options for food restrictions and staff was upfront in helping me find a pizza flavor I liked. Of course, if getting the bird meant you receive a tasty slice of thin crust covered in chunks of spicy buffalo wings, blue cheese dressing, scallions and jalapeñoes then you wouldn't be too offended either. Paired with a cold beer and stylish red booths, Two Boots pizza does right by me every time. My only regret is that for $3.75 their slices are pretty small compared to most NY joints I've been to so if you're hungry, get two and shell over $8 for a full meal. They also rent DVDs on the side so if you'd rather get your pie to go it's a one stop shop. read more
