Finally-Violet is open for lunch and it was fabulous. Started with the Brussel sprouts for the table. They were the best I've had anywhere. Beautifully charred, spicy and sweet at the same time, and I've never been one to wax eloquent about green vegetables. I followed them with the ficelle sandwich of melted Affinois cheese, marinated artichokes, mustard and apple butter. It was big enough for two, so I brought half of it home to my husband. Can't wait to try some of the other sandwiches. Violet has been a favorite dinner place for us since it opened just before the pandemic. We've ordered in, ate there in person when restaurants reopened and it will be my #1 choice for ladies lunch. The restaurant is charming, and the staff couldn't be nicer. read more

Order take out tonight! The Best dinner. We got chicken for two the first time, salmon for 4 the next. Every dish was terrific; get a fruit tarte for dessert. The owner takes your order over the phone, and then delivers it herself, if you live within 5 miles. She just opened weeks before the mandatory shutdown. Ambiance was on point. The drinks were amazing and super flavorful without being overpowering. The French onion soup and Caesar salad were each a solid 9.5/10. This commentary relates to one specific item on the menu-- the Double Smash Burger (at $28). The menu for this item includes an *, which warns that it is at the patron's risk to order anything cooked rare. As Violet Bistro is known as a quality French-style bistro one might assume the quality of their meat would be high. It's actually a bit surprising that a lovely Steak Tartar is not on the menu. Willing to take the risk to my future health, I ordered my burger rare. The waiter explained the "double" referred to two very thin patties. "They will be more toward medium rare," he said. I decided to take the chance. When the dish arrived, however, the "twins" had been cooked way past medium rare, without a hint of pink. Since the restaurant had thought it of enough importance to include the "warning *," I decided to ask the hostess for her opinion. Her rather brusk response was too many people sent them back because they wanted the meat cooked more or less. What follows is a direct quote, "now we cook our burgers just like In-and Out, all the same." As I recall a "double double" at "In and Out is about $5. Oh well. I write this simply to alert future patrons about ordering this dish. As Anthony Bourdain points out in "Kitchen Confidential" he has no respect for anyone who orders good meat well done. read more

A hint of Provence in LA! Wow, we were blown away by our last minute decision to eat at Violet Bistro. Being from the east coast some of the places we have tried in LA have not been as kind and welcoming as the staff at VB. From the moment we walked in without a reservation we were taken back by their kindness and the incredible atmosphere of this little gem near UCLA. The food was amazing!!! We had the quiche of the day which was savory yet light and accompanied by a delicious simple yet tasty salad. My daughter who is gluten free has so many options and chose the organic chicken which was so tender, juicy and flavorful. We also ordered the frites which were incredible. The atmosphere is second to none. We had a view of the cooking classes on the upstairs patio which was so enjoyable and the decor was so understatedly beautiful. Our server, Holly was so sweet, kind and efficient. She knew everything about the menu and the gf offerings and was so accommodating and friendly. The cocktails were delicious and refreshing and so much fun too! We couldn't have asked for a better experience! I am so glad we took a chance on this little gem! read more

It's a cute place and the service is good, but I can't say as I love the food. The burger was meh, and for $28, I expected something better. The chocolate mousse was nothing special, and a little odd with an abundance of some sort of creamy topping. Note they also tell you upfront you can not linger as there is a 90-minute time limit, and they want to flip the table. But, eh, this is Westwood, not the destination spot for fine dining. read more

This is one star for the response to my review. We are in a society at a time where greater sensitivity to diversity particularly in businesses where money is being spent by that diverse clientele is important. You missed the fact that the behavior of your staff was embarrassing to the out of town guest that we brought to your restaurant both for how we as a group were treated and for him to raise what was going on with the restaurant. So while you are very confident with your staff it tells me that you're brushing off the concerns that I voiced in behalf of believing it was an off night for the staff member who was our waitperson. Given that the university spends a lot of money in Westwood entertaining colleagues rest assured I will share this experience with my colleagues as well as your response when we are selecting dining options. read more

Fall from grace. We'd been there last year and were so impressed, but it appears they've jumped the shark. It took Megan P, our barely existent server, 45 minutes to take our order (admitting she was busy with other tables) and then brought a cheese plate, my salad and my wife's soup at the time same time on two-top with plates overlapping and the edges falling off the sides of the table . When we asked Megan P if she could take the soup and salad away so we could enjoy the cheese, she scoffed... and then reply with an ... "ooookaaay!" As I really didn't want the salad and the soup sitting on a counter for 20 minutes, I asked if we could pass on the cheese plate, because the salad and soup were right in front of us... and she looked at me with disdain, picked it up and just walked away without uttering a word. Yep! The quiches that came out another 50-minutes later were dry and absolutely tasteless.. when they were absolutely memorable last time. The prevalent memory this time was only about how rude and inattentive Megan P was. We will never return. read more

Great Covid dining experience. We ate outside on the street but they have an open-air indoor dining inside as well. MUST get the gazpacho it was unreal! We had dinner here with the family right after they opened and loved the food and the atmosphere. Since then we have ordered take out and plan on going back in for dining. Had brunch today and the whole experience was over-the-top good. The 3 of us decided to eat family style and shared the pamplemousse (french toast in english), quiche, & moulin rouge (fried egg with roasted/smashed potatoes in english). So good!! And we thought the price was appropriate - not inexpensive but not crazy. The ambience was very gracious and the service very attentive. We will definitely be back. read more

I came here a few minutes ago to have a quick Brunch I'm on town by myself and I was really really excited to dine here. I left here crying, I walked in and there was two people in front of me so I stood behind them while they waited for the hostess to come back. Another guy walked in and instead of the lady acknowledging me she asked him if he needed a table or anything still didn't acknowledge me. Finally she says hi didn't ask where I wanted to sit to I said can I just sit at your bar she didn't even ask how many people were in my party or anything. I sat at the bar the bartender said hi and then walked away didn't say anything after that didn't bring me a menu until a few minutes later. I got up and walked out. I was very disappointed, I really wanted to dine here I was telling my husband how excited I was and now I'm on the phone crying to my husband. read more

Delicious!!! We ordered dinner to go, not realizing that they have the hidden courtyard patio, otherwise we would have "dined in." Even to-go everything was packaged beautifully, still warm and most importantly delicious!! Two of us had the salmon (medium rare as ordered- yum), the Thai chicken sandwich (more filling which was good and very tasty), the forbidden rice (who knew rice could taste so good?) and the market greens. This review is a little overdue, but all I could say is that the food here is DELICIOUS. As a vegan, I appreciated that there were quite a handful of options for me to try out. With a couple of my friends who aren't vegan, we shared the sautéed market greens, fries (frites which were super crispy), ratatouille, whole-roasted cauliflower, seared halibut, rotisserie chicken, and the plant burger (no buns to make it vegan but sadly wasn't a huge fan of the barbecue-like sauce on top), and yes we ate everything. Also, the desserts were pretty good but know that the chocolate cake is on the heavier side and the pavlova was fruity/lighter (ok I dropped the veganism to try a bite of these two). I believe the cookies are vegan-friendly and loved those as well...but I am a cookie-lover in general. What I especially liked about this place is that the food feels fairly healthy and satisfying, which I probably knocked out the window after going overboard with trying the majority of the menu. Plus, the staff was super friendly, customer service was on-point, and beyond, and the overall decor of the place gives off a comfy vibe. Now before you drop your wallet, we did get a huge discount as one of my friends who was with my boyfriend and I is a chef at this place, BUT seriously. You can't go wrong with what you order here and it's more fun to go family-style! I wish I took more pictures of the food but I was too hungry to do that at the time. Darling courtyard atmosphere serving a contemporary French bistro menu. Their new innovative chef is excellent having taken the restaurant to new heights during covid- not an easy feat. The caesar salad is outstanding and the salmon almandine is one of the most delicious and unique preparations out there.
