I'm so glad I come across Amami Sushi when I was doing my research on an afforable Omakase set to have my boyfriend and I try for the first time. I was looking around for an Omakase offering that was not too expensive (over $150) and didn't skimp out on proportions. On Yelp, there is no reservation system, just a waitlist. However, I did give them a call and was able to book seating for two so I would give that a try if you're planning to come here in advance. For a Saturday night at 7pm, it was pretty full, but I didn't see too many parties waiting outside. Parking is terrible though, but we were fortunate to find a public parking lot that was pretty close. The only thing is that there wasn't much light at that parking lot and it felt a bit sketch. Nothing happened when I came back to my car though so yay! Once you are seated, the server brings you a green tea set to warm up. The green tea was warm and tasty! The Omakase offering ($42 per person) with 10pc of nigiri was well worth it. Just know that you might be waiting a bit for it since a lot of people order for it, but we certainly didn't mind! HOLY MOLY - the nigiri pieces were HUGE. I was pleasantly surprised by how big the fish cuts were. I loved the rice that they used in all the pieces; it was sweet and did not fall apart that easily. All the pieces were very good, but I think my favorites is the seared salmon, and the three hamachi-like pieces (we didn't know the names). Unfortunately, they don't tell us what fish is which, but all tasted great. Some pieces had wasabi on top with caviar, which wasn't too overwhelming with the fish, but I'd just be careful if you are super sensitive to it. Really good sushi. Can get really busy, but it's worth it. I've been a few times and each time, the sushi has been fresh and reminded me of the sashimi in Japan. Get the toro specials and any other seasonal special that might be available. Just look on the wall. The chicken karage is not too bad as well as a starter. Can't wait to go back. Amami Sushi is a casual Japanese dining spot that is most well known for their omakase set. There are multiple Amami Sushi locations, with this one being on the busy El Camino Real right by the border of Millbrae. They have a small parking lot just for their restaurant. The inside features several tables as well as counter seating by the sushi bar. I have dined here on multiple occasions for dinner as well as ordered takeout from here. The dining experience inside tends to be a bit mixed, usually depending on how busy they are at the time. Even if there is a table available, I have found that it can take a while before they clean it up and allow for seating. The same can be said after ordering food where it can take a short or long time for the food to arrive on different occasions. They seem to get a lot of delivery orders depending on the day and at times, that can make the dine-in experience not as good overall. As for the food here, all the sashimi tastes fresh and very good. I recommend their omakase which may sound pricey at ~$42, but is worth it and affordable compared to other omakase which can go for well over a hundred dollars. The omakase includes a nice variety of nigiri with generous cuts of sashimi. They add a little bit of garnish on some of them which gives them a nice little kick. The wasabi here is actually great as well. The ratio of fish to rice is just right to make the entire meal not overly filling and full of flavor. My sister and her family took my family here to celebrate my birthday because I'm the type of person that can never get enough of sushi. Judging from the esthetic from the parking, it looked like restaurants was a fast food restaurant previously. The menu is entirely digital and they don't have a paper menu when asked. This isn't the first restaurant where the menu is digitized, but I have never had a restaurant where they don't at least have a few paper copies for the tech peeps. My sister recommended I get the omakase so brother-in-law and I ordered that dish, it was one of the more expensive item on the menu, but my sister insisted so I ordered it. The dish came with 10 pieces of the chef's choice selection for $42. The price seems reasonable if you calculated by pieces and the slice the fish extra long, which almost give you an extra 1/2 piece os sushi. We were very pleased with the selection and finished it without trying too hard. Omakase: 5/5 My husband ordered the beef teriyaki dinner. He said it was very nicely prepared. By the time I wanted a piece to try, he finished his entree already. It's either that good, or I'm just too slow. Teriyaki Beef Dinner Entree: 5/5 For the rest, they ordered ordered the Following to be shared: Tai Carpaccio - it was good on the first bite, but it later became overwhelming sweet. It was left on the table until the very because none of us like it. My husband finally eat it without the sauce and said it was fine. This $18 dish is a total disappointment Tai Carpaccio: 1/5 The spices and batter on the Chicken Kara-Age is very good. Everyone appears to have enjoyed this dish. I came here around 5-6pm, right before the rush. I was seated immediately and we ordered the infamous $42 omakase. They bring you a plate with 10 pieces of sushi with the absolute ideal fish to rice ratio. They don't tell you what the fish is, but it was delicious nonetheless. The only issue I have with this place is service. One of the servers accidently charged my card for someone else's tab and then charged mine. He didn't tell me that it happened, but I get notifications on my phone. When I asked them about it, he got defensive and just kept saying that it was voided so it doesn't matter anyways. I would have appreciated his acknowledgement of his mistake, but I got none of that. read more

my go-to spot for fresh sashimi at a very reasonable price, plus they always give very thick cuts! a lot of folks will come here for their omakase nigiri which is always beautifully presented with very long cuts of fish but personally i like ordering cuts of my favorites and an appetizer or two. service can be a bit slow when it's just one server covering tables and handling all the online orders, cleaning, and ringing up checks. however unless you are ordering the omakase, you won't have to wait too long. the store is a bit small so i would recommend either making a reservation or going after the usual dinner rush. weekdays are definitely easier to grab seats as walk-ins than weekend! read more

Went for Dinner Food - 5/5. Amami is great for being consistently good no matter the location yet having a little quirk about each experience that makes them unique. I find myself ordering similar items and while the quality is great overall, sometimes a location does something better than others. The beef teriyaki here was a cut above the rest. Steak was thick, a perfect medium rare and had great sear. The thickness of the steak allowed their cooking finesse to shine and had a better sauce to meat ratio than other locations. Sushi was fantastic as usual. Each piece was fresh, melted in your mouth and had great rice to fish ratio. Their nigiri is always solid and the rock'n roll had good bite on the eel. Unfortunately their special roll, the melted in the mouth roll, was just alright. While it was very tender and did melt in your mouth, there was too much going on at once and the flavors didn't harmonize well. Service - 4/5. Friendly and quick service. Value - 5/5. The sushi entrees are in the mid to higher $20s and the beef teriyaki entree was $18. Each entree came with miso soup with the hot entree adds a side salad. Steak was of good size and the nigiris had plenty of fish. Hot entrees have an option to add 4 nigiris for $8, which is a great price for variety. If there's one thing to get from here, make sure to get the Seared Norwegian Salmon Nigiri - you won't regret it! This was definitely the star of the show. I heard Amami is doing indoor dining again, so I went to try them out after several months of waiting. I ordered the edamame, tempura mix, sushi deluxe combo, hamachi kama, ankimo, tuna tataki, and a handful of other nigiri. All in, for two and some leftovers we spent about $100. Very good value for the quality and proportions - I ended up not even touching the hamachi Kama and brought it home for lunch instead. Edamame - there's actually a lot of flavor packed into these, I assume it's boiled in salt water because I saw no salt on the edamame visually. Tuna tataki - seems much more fit as a salad than a "tuna tataki" - I wasn't really disappointed since it was all delicious, but I don't think it's advertised correctly under the name tuna tataki. Ankimo - I wasn't the biggest fan of the ankimo, it had a pleasant texture and contrast with the crisp onions, but not much flavor otherwise. Tempura mix - the tempura was very crisp and light which I love, however amami uses a slightly sour maybe yuzu or ponzu added to the tempura dipping sauce which I wasn't too fond of. Sushi deluxe - around the 6th piece was when I realized we really over ordered quite a bit, so I never got to the unagi/avocado roll, but every single piece on the deluxe plate was portioned very large and surprisingly high quality - sushi rice is better here than almost anywhere I've been yet, the fish were also very soft and almost melt away. Right outside of amami there's about 7 parking spots + 1 handicap, making parking a bit sparse on busy nights. read more

Unfortunately the Asian male working the front loves to let his friends cut in line. One bad apple really does ruin the batch. My family including my daughter (1 yrs old) waited 45 min in line for dinner. As we were about to seat, the male server mentioned the people that walked in was ahead of us. I knew this wasn't true bc I saw the list nobody was ahead of us as we were waiting there for 45min. It's really sad that someone can have such a big ego to have his friends cut in line ahead of a 1 yr old baby. The guy mentioned, those were not friends but just customers... Well guess what, he took a few shots with these people. And when my husband saw them take shots, he looked away. A delightful omakase experience that doesn't break the bank. First off, I am so excited that they are finally opened for dine in! For the longest time they were only doing takeout during covid. I came here with a friend as soon as they opened for dinner. We ordered a tempura appetizer and the 10 piece Omakase nigiri for each of us. The service is really great and attentive!!! We came after a hike and my friend probably drank 3-4 glasses of water which were always promptly refilled when empty so that was really nice. The tempura came out first! It wasn't anything special but it was good! The star of the show was definitely the omakase! The waitress brought out and named each of the fish and told us to eat it in the order from bottom row to the top, left to right. They are SO generous with the fish on the nigiri and they were ALL DELICIOUS. I was pretty full after the 6th or 7th piece but I still ate everything because I couldn't stop. I think one thing that would have been nice is if they also gave pickled ginger to cleanse our palette between each fish. I've eaten here numerous times, and every time it hits the spot. Used to be very busy, but now there are many other options with all the other omakase places that have opened. No complaints though as we easily got a table on a Saturday evening. Still the best value for omakase in the Bay Area! The fish is fresh and the pieces are freakin' huge! Each piece is literally twice the size of most other places! If you and your dining partner aren't too hungry, you can easily share one omakase set (just get a knife or share a bite lol) I have always loved the baby lobster with truffle oil (they usually have it as part of the omakase set, but you should ask just in case). The ankimo is fresh, and if you order amaebi, you have the option to get the shrimp head made into soup or fried. Solid sushi for a reasonable price. I put in an order for pickup and my food was ready roughly 30 minutes later. Everything was bagged and ready to go by the front door so I could just grab and go. The ambience inside is casual and inviting and I wouldn't mind dining in the next time I come here. Their sushi rolls are a good size and they don't skimp on the filling which is nice. There is a good assortment of both raw and cooked sushi rolls which comes in handy during family dinners as everyone has a different preference. We've also had two instances now where we had to wait an hour for food because they were heavily prioritizing takeout orders instead of dine in tables. If you want fresh fish, this is the spot for you! They have a few locations in the Bay Area and they are all equally good (as in, you can go to any of the location and will not be disappointed). Last Saturday night, we ordered takeout from Amami and it took 1.5 hours to get our food. We placed the order around 6 and didn't get it until 7:30. We should have known that when we called in and there was a busy tone that it would be a busy night for them, but we still proceeded with placing the order online. The initial time of pickup was at 6:30 but it got changed to 7:13 via email, but when we called they said 7:30. We got the omakase which was a great deal! They give you large slabs of fish and topped it off with different flavors for some of them. I tasted some truffle scent to it. The fish was really fresh and each piece tasted different. We also ordered the sushi deluxe and sushi regular which were just alright. Nothing special about those, or maybe by that time, we were getting pretty full. We were seated at the bar which I originally did not prefer but ended up being a fun experience - it's cool to watch the sushi chefs do their thing and prepare all the other delicious items that other people ordered haha! We shared the sushi deluxe and the salmon lover roll. Salmon lover roll was good, nothing spectacular. I personally thought the sushi deluxe was a great deal - it's $25 for miso soup, 9 nigiri pieces and a rock n roll maki! It's cheaper than the omakase set because the some nigiri is duplicated, but as long as you don't mind that, I highly recommend it. The fish is fresh and the nigiri portions are generous. Today I couldn't recognize this place. This was my family sushi place. I've been going there at least once a month - month and half. Today after work I was happy to finish the day with some good sushi, but...... Upon our arrival, I thought amami was full and had no available seats because of the noise from the inside. When I opened the door, literally observed 2 tables only occupied. The table with 6 people on, was EXTREMELY loud at yelling, shouting and laughing for the whole hour I was there. Initially I thought they would stop, but after we ordered and started eating, figured it wasn't over. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind people drinking and having fun, but when you're in a small place like that and yelling like you're at the bar somewhere in downtown San Francisco, it's unacceptable. I asked the only one lady who was working there if she could talk with them. Obviously she did not and the group kept having fun, while everybody else were just turning around with frustrated face like "wtf". Also the waiting time for the food increased for some reason, before was way faster. The quality is the same, I like it! Not 10/10 but still better than many other spots and the price is reasonable. With that saying, today I went home disappointed and not satisfied with my dinner. Next time (if my family still wants to go back) i would like to see the same amami that I loved to go almost every month. read more

The rolls are packed with flavor because they aren't heavy on the rice. This is one of the best Sushi restaurants in the bay. Make reservations because it is a small restaurant. Had dinner here with a friend on a Sunday night, who was able to make a reservation via phone call on the same day and get a table (they don't take online reservations). They instantly also serve you hot tea over the course of your meal. It's a small place, and we all ordered the omakase. I highly recommend ordering that (it's not on the paper menu) because of its insane freshness, access to fresh wasabi which is rare in the U.S., and more affordable pricing ($42) compared to omakase in other restaurants in the Bay Area! For those who don't know what "omakase" is - it's means "up to you" meaning that's it's the chef's choice what fish/nigiri they choose to serve you. They give you 10 pieces, and ask that you eat it from the most lean to the most fatty (be sure to ask your serve what the fish are and in what direction to eat them!) Be sure to eat a piece of fresh ginger after each piece to cleanse your palette. Soooo amazing!! Highly encouraging going to this or any other Amami location. Only downside was it took ~1 hour for us to get our food, so prepare for that possibility. A server gave us free edamame for the wait, but our patience was getting thin by the time we got the food. This place is super busy but we lucked out by coming early and calling ahead to reserve a table for our party. Note that they won't seat you until everyone in the party has arrived. We ordered a variety of sushi rolls, nigiri, karaage, udon and hamachi kama. The fish (raw and cooked) was fresh and the rolls were beautifully presented. The karaage was not a traditional preparation and looked more like fried clams since they were long, thin strips of chicken. The chicken didn't seem to have been marinated and was quite plain. The hamachi collar was delicious and perfectly cooked. They appear to use MSG in their dishes. I have a reaction to it but am unsure which dishes contained it. This is a first for me while eating sushi. Service was a bit uneven. The staff seemed overworked and tried to keep up. The sushi dishes arrived fairly quickly but the udon took quite awhile to arrive. They have a very small parking lot out front. Otherwise there is free parking on the street. Please check you itemized bill prior to payment! I noticed an 18% service charge was added to the bill even though we had less than 6 people in our party. I almost paid them a rather generous tip until I saw that they had already added their own. I wonder how many people even caught this when paying their bill? I expect it when it's a party of six or more, but not when it's a smaller group. Amami seems to be quite popular with others but it's not for me. Had an experience with this waitress that I never experienced before. The restaurant does not provide written menus only menus that you can scan. The reason provided was the prices were different. We ordered Teriyaki chicken, the menu had read regular or combo both $17.00 each. We asked the waitress what the difference was between the two. The restaurant Internet had very bad service to top of the inconvenient. So neither we nor the waitress could open the description. They tried to explain it to us with their broken English and we ordered the combo for $17.00 with California rolls as for what we understood per her explanation. When we got the bill. It was doubled the price and the waitress said that it was because of the California rolls. I tried to explained to her she should honor the price on the menu, that is why we asked her in the first place. She started arguing with me and what came next was absurd , she took the to go bag from the table to the back of the kitchen and dumped half of the leftovers, she said she did this because we didn't want to pay for their discrepancy . We left it there not knowing what else she did with our food. Of course I would not go back there. One last observation the cooks were smoking in the front of the restaurant.
