I like this place. Can't really explain it but I'll try. In a city flooded with great bbq, I try to keep my expectations pretty low and any establishment located on prime real estate lowers my expectations even further because they could probably sell some food even with less than top notch food. It's for that reason that I'm always surprised with and have my expectations exceeded by Vinny's. Their sides lean toward the spicy side which I prefer. Spicy beans, spicy not-too-mayoey slaw, spicy corn, huge chunks of cheese in the sausage and even the non-spicy version is well flavored. I'll start by saying Brian is a good man. My wife and I couldn't check into our Airbnb yet so we decided to go grab lunch. BBQ was the only choice and Big Vinny's happened to be in the neighborhood of the Airbnb. So we Lyfted our way from the airport with our carryons and backpacks... Upon arrival at Big Vinny's, which is a trailer style rig with a few benches in front, we scanned the menu and both chose the 2 meat plate. I went with brisket (duh...it's Texas) and baby backs. My wife went with brisket and a sausage link. Sides of Coleslaw, beans, potato salad were added. The food came quickly...what to say...it was wonderful. Brisket was tender and smoky, ribs had that perfect bite, sausage was buttery with a little spice, sides were great especially the cole slaw - don't sleep on the cole slaw, it helps break up the meat with a vinegary bite. Sauce was not necessary but nevertheless deliciously tangy. Midway through our meal, Brian popped out and gave us some of his smoked turkey and spare ribs so we could try all the items. Then he gave us a bottle of Topo Chico (a local sparkling water) on the house as well. If that wasn't generous enough, when we finished, Brian offered to store our bags in his trailer while we explored until our Airbnb opened up. What an introduction to Austin, I am extraordinarily thankful and appreciate Brian's genuine kindness. Brian - if you're reading this, thanks so much for your hospitality. It means a lot to us. Don't know what this is...but it isn't BBQ. Stopped by for some moist brisket for a quick lunch. After all, brisket is the true litmus test for legit Q. To thought I'd try some local BBQ, boy was I disappointed, my three meat plate had one piece of meat that was so dried up and burnt that I don't know what it was then there were two dried up over cooked link sausages. Stopped here on a biker tour for lunch. Great prices, great food and relaxed vibe. Awesome food truck with all sorts of delicious bbq. I had the brisket and sausage sandwich with 2 sides. The food was a big serving! Make sure you come hungry. Service was great and we sat right next to the truck. A friend and I were at the meat place (the name escapes me) buying beef jerky and we were just about to call a lyft to take us to our Airbnb when we spotted Big Vinnys and our curiosity got the better of us. We had literally just come from a restaurant and were supposed to go home and get ready to go out to yet another one but we quickly yelped the place JUST IN CASE. When we saw that it had a solid five stars we knew that our duty was clear. We sampled the ribs and they were DELICIOUS. Smoky, moist and tender. Big Vinny's pork ribs BBQ is the best I've had in a truck. Unassuming by appearance and tucked in a small corner near Hudson Meats in SoCo, the food coming from this truck is finger licking good. Big Vinny was kind enough to give me a sample of the pork ribs. It was nommm at first bite. The juicy ribs were warm and the meat fell off the bone with every bite. Since there was line around the block for Blacks bbq we decided to get our food to go from the trailer. 1lb of lean 1lb of moist a rack of baby back ribs. It was all terrible! Sittin in a nearby parking lot waiting on work when I decided it was time to eat.. popped open my Yelp and Big Vinnys shows up with some mouth watering photos of meat and smoke. My favorite combination. So I drive over to give it a try. Showed up and no one is there but a sign saying be right back. No problem. Not in any kind of rush. A nice fella arrives shortly after and takes my order, today the tx frito pie sounds like a winner, with a big red soda of course. I was so disappointed in my tray of food when I got it. It looked great and I could tell the flavor of the brisket and sausage was on point, but it was cold... not cold, cold.. like fridge cold.. but just barely warm.. like the cheese never even melted cold. Just landed in Austin (out of BNA), had a hankering for some Texas-style 'cue, which means brisket. Memphis pork ribs is the top of the heap for any and all barbecue, but second is 'squite-smoked brisket, and they don't have it down too well in Tennessee. But they do in Austin, lots of choices, I landed on Vinny's (by way of GrubHub) and took my chances. It was an excellent choice. I got a three-meat with brisket, pork rib and jalapeno sausage, and it was all very good (and I'm a tough critic of 'cue, with my own home smoked being best). This was very, very good, Vinny's, tasted like he had those sausages made special. The burnt ends were severely awesome, and the beef was very good, if a fraction dryer than I prefer. Kudos on the pork spare rib, too. His sauce was good (for Texas), and way powerful sides, the corn was super spicy, the beans were savory, and the cole slaw rocked. I appreciate the simplicity of pickles and white bread, the price is very reasonable for the amount of food, and I would probably have given ol' Vinny a 5 if he'd been in Tennessee. I would have taken a picture but I ate it all before I thought of it. I'm pleased with my choice and ya'll should give Vinny a try, and my trip is off strong. read more
