I made a reservation for 4 fairly easily for a Friday night & I feel like it should definitely be more crowded for the amount of attention to detail and quality of food. We started with the bread, cheese/fruit platter, and octopus for appetizers. Bread was my favorite- they give you 3 different types of breads that are freshly made each day. I'm gluten intolerant but I risked it all just for this bread. The octopus had a great char on it. Our server recommended a wine pairing for what we ordered from their 100+ selection & it was very well balanced. All of the entrees we ordered were perfect. From the duck breast w crispy skin & tender meat to the presentation of the bass. For dessert we got their warm butter cake & cherry jubilee. I loved the cherry jubilee for the show component of it which just made it a lot more interactive & engaging. The ambiance is an upscale casual for the most part. Had an amazing Valentine's dinner here. The food was delicious and service was impeccable yet warm. All of the staff were so friendly yet professional from Reina who greeted and sat us to the servers and even the Chef who came by and chatted with us. The service was so attentive that they even brought out a whole salsify uncooked (root vegetable) to show me because I saw it on the menu and asked about it because I had never heard of it. I came to Chez Bacchus for dinner to celebrate a birthday and I really enjoyed the food, the service, and the ambiance! first and foremost, this is an expensive restaurant. For two people who shared an appetizer, an entrée, a dessert, and had 3 glasses of wine the total was around $300 The food is great! Their bread appetizer is 3 different styles of sourdough bread slices, baked fresh, and comes with aged balsamic and olive oil. We also opted to get an addon of a whole baked garlic bulb with maldon salt. The balsamic + garlic + salt on top of the bread was amazing. I could have been content with just eating bread and drinking wine for the night Our entrée was a 32oz steak, I can't remember what type unfortunately but it was so so tender and had a great crust and the au jus that it comes with just gives it so much more flavor. it also came with a side of sautéed mushrooms and potato salad. it was a cold potato salad which I did find a little odd but it was delicious and I don't usually care for potato salad For dessert we opted to get their peach pavlova, which is flambéed table side, and made with peaches, a raspberry jam-esque thing (iirc) and chambord. The Chambord definitely gives it a unique flavor and also helps cut the sweetness of the dessert. The meringue is light and reminiscent of marshmallow fluff as good as the food was, the service was even better and our server, Santiago I believe his name is, was exceptional. it wasn't just a service of waiting on us hand and foot but also answering and asking us questions to give us recommendations to make our experience the best it could be. The location is mainly residential so parking near the restaurant can be pretty hard to find but you can valet for $15 I do like the decor but it seems like a mix of fine-dinning (white table clothes, white linen napkins, black contrast seating), wine lounge (wine rack, wine decor) and hotel bar all in one. read more

Not enough good words to describe my dinner at Chez Bacchus. Delicious food. Amazing selection of wine. Beer for those who don't drink wine. Unique dishes and desserts. Astounding service. Chill but elegant vibe. I don't know what more to say to get you to try this place. They have a rotating menu and at first I was a little disappointed as I had really wanted their lamb dish. But the menu did not disappoint. Bread basket- do not skip on this. I was skeptical, because nobody needs that much carbs. But ooooh, it was delicious. Three types of sourdough, each baked in house, unique, and a perfect starter. Paired with an 18 year balsamic vinegar, absolute perfection. Wagyu cheek pot pie - kinda deconstructed, but it worked super well. Flaky af puff pastry. Tender and flavorful wagyu cheek. Aromatic and perfect broth. Charred octopus - I like octopus, and this dish did not disappoint. Braised in red wine, charred at all the right spots, with a great pairing on the bottom that meshes so well all together. Duck breast - yes! I've had a lot of duck breast before, but I really appreciate the ingenuity of this dish. Duck was cooked to my liking (my husband wanted it a BIT more red). What I love about this dish is its diversity. It's not just a normal strip of Duck breast with an orange sauce. It was paired with great herbs, a Duck confit, and a really nice lime bean side. All of it together was such a unique dish. Apple Mille fuille- perfectly poached apples. Tender And flaky layers, delicious vanilla bean cream. 100% recommend. I'd totally get the banana fosters next time though, flambed tableside! This restaurant was absolutely great. Perfect for two people, or four, or any amount. This was a FINE dining experience! Hidden gem near downtown Long Beach, street or valet parking, was surprised to find it quiet on a Friday night. Was able to try a bit of most things on the menu that left me wanting to come back for the rest, everything was tasty, fresh and unique. The service was attentive and friendly. Had the pleasure of meeting John, the sommelier and his wife as well. The inside of the restaurant was beautiful with a private party room in the back. The place was dimly lit and perfect for date night. An extensive wine and housemade cocktail list they also offered a variety of Bacchus "pops"- Non alcoholic drinks for those who prefer to skip the alcohol. I tried the hibiscus rosemary and was the perfect amount of sweet and refreshing at a great price point too! Mocktails can be pricey these days. Can't wait to try the other flavors as well all house made with care by the friendly gentleman bartender who greeted us as well! I feel the price point was also fair for the presentation, ambiance and service. Left feeling satiated and not overfull having filled up with fresh ingredients. I have been to at least fourteen different afternoon tea experiences in my life, including the ones at The Huntington, Chado Tea House, and the Hello Kitty Cafe. Chez Bacchus is in the top 3, if not the best of my experiences. Everyone who works there, from the valet to the host to the bartender to the chef was so friendly that it stood out to me. It was beyond regular customer service. The food was delicious and unique. They had a whole tea presentation prepared, rather than just giving you a menu, which felt special. Though many tea houses have more than the 8 teas that Chez Bacchus has, I didn't find myself wanting for selection. There were black teas, green teas, and herbal teas, and I honestly think that was enough. I get overwhelmed by those tea menus with 30 different teas on them. And another advantage of having a more selective tea menus is that the tea was loose leaf, rather than bags. I had such a good time that I hope to return for their dinner menu and cocktails! Also, free street parking on Sunday afternoon was really easy. read more

Me and my partner love Chez Bacchus! It's one of our go to special places to go for a celebratory date night. Their bread basket is definitely worth ordering and you can't go wrong with the menu items. I love how seasonal and rotational it is. Lots of options for wine if that's your thing; thus their name. If they have the tableside crepes for dessert, that's always fun! We've shared a good deal of appetizers and entrees here and service has always been kind, hospitable, and great. I went there with my friend for the high team. To start they required a $55 dollar reservation, that it was supposed to be accredited to the final bill. The place is nice, and the food was okay. If you are going for high tea, rest assure nothing is farm to table. When the bill came they did not deduct the $55, to which we had a receipt, nor they notify anything related to it. So we proceed and mention it to our server and they mentioned it will be refunded. We asked for a manager to which their response was 'they are working from home.' Then the "owner" came to say they had an issue in the system and we should get refunded by Monday. It has been more than a week and no refund has been issued. Even when we have called to follow up. Be caution when checking the bill, especially, if you made a reservation that required money upfront. read more

So just to be clear, this is a review I was going to post a whole year ago and just never found the time to post. But more recent reviews indicate to me that things have probably not changed too much in the subsequent year, so I've decided I'm just going to post it anyway, as it is fairly rare that I'm in the market for a restaurant in Long Beach this nice (by which I mean expensive - unless, of course, your parents are in town for a few days and want to take you somewhere nice, which was why we were here for dinner a year ago.) Our service was overall pretty fantastic start to finish, despite the place being quite busy - with the one exception that, if you wanted wine, you *had* to go through the somm (even if you knew what you wanted), and as there was only one somm for the whole restaurant, that was sometimes a bottleneck in ordering (though if you *don't* know what wine you want - by somm I do mean that they have a real somm, and boy does he know his stuff). I was also just slightly irritated at their decision to charge $2.50 per seat for water, with everything this expensive - you can decline it, but then you don't get any water all evening. (They excuse this by stating it's *fancy* water, which I'm sure it is - but being there's literally nothing wrong with Long Beach tap water, it's clearly mainly just an extra $2.50 they can extract. Obviously if you're frequenting a place this upscale, an extra $2.50 isn't very much money - but I agreed with my step-dad, who commented afterwards, more than anything, it's just a weirdly *awkward* way to start a meal, by asking right when you sit down, whether you'd like to pay $2.50 for water, or have no water.) For our appetizer, we ordered the house-baked bread, which was indeed wonderful, and pretty reasonably priced in terms of how much *bread* you get - other than once again, it felt slightly nickel-and-dime-y that we definitely did not get quite enough olive oil or vinegar for the amount of bread (and they would have charged $5 for a bit more). Me and my wife also shared an appetizer no longer on the menu, of "diver scallop" - it was tasty, but yes, diver scallop, large, but *singular*, for $20. (That isn't as useful though, as I can't comment on the size, nor enjoyment of the seafood appetizers on the current menu, obviously, which seem somewhat more involved.) My mom also had a salad - I didn't try it, but she said it was good. On the the other hand, the entrees me and my wife tried, while expensive, were both excellent and entirely entree-sized, so I would say, fairly reasonably priced for this sort of upscale dining (especially if, of course, your parents are paying). Again, the specific dishes we tried aren't on the current menu, but it feels like the sort of place where the menu changes relatively often, anyway. In any case, though, I am definitely comparing them against the place I always try to go when we're visiting them in Santa Cruz rather than the inverse, which has on multiple occasions that we've been there, done similarly excellent entrees, slightly larger, slightly more inventive, and definitely cheaper (still not *cheap*) - and Santa Cruz isn't exactly a cheap place for real estate any more than Long Beach. They do have a pretty solid wine list - some of it, expectedly, quite expensive, but a decent number of by-the-glass glasses, especially in the white wine section, for surprisingly reasonable prices. I also especially loved that it was the sort of place where you could have a (complimentary) taste of a couple wines before ordering, so you knew you'd get a glass you liked. I ended up getting a glass of the Furmint, a varietal I didn't think I'd tried before, but which is definitely one I'm going to look out for now (and which *is* still on their menu) - funny enough, turns out I *had* had wines made with that grape before, as it's one of the primary grapes used in making dessert Tokaji. Haven't seen it as a dry wine anywhere else though - and it is wonderful (dry, it was described, accurately, as similar to a dry Riesling.) Looks like their cheapest wines (including the Furmint) went up a couple dollars , from $10 when I was there, or $15 for a carafe, to $12 now, or $18 for a carafe, but that's still pretty reasonable for this level of restaurant, and the quality of wine they carry. (They do also have a happy hour where at least some of their wines are $8, weekdays from 5-7, though I can't speak to which ones, as we weren't there for it.) All that said - I do want to try their much more reasonably priced weekend brunch sometime. I'll probably get a glass of the Furmint again, too, if I ever get around to it. (Though I still don't know how I feel about that extra slightly passive-aggressive-feeling water surcharge...) read more

We chose to visit Chez Bacchus to celebrate our 38th anniversary based on reviews left by other diners. Thank you all for the recommendation! Everything was not just lovely, but was interesting and served with pride and care. The ambiance is romantic and warm. The service was top notch, and not only our server, but other servers stopped by to make recommendations and answer questions. But the star is, of course, the food. We started with Long Beach's best martinis--he had the vodka and I had the gin. They can truly boast about these! The house made bread with roasted garlic and salt was generous and so flavorful. The shrimp tempura was light and crispy with a delightful gochujang sauce and mint slaw. My husband ordered the duck leg confit which came with corn sauce and roasted potatoes. The duck fell off the bones, rich and flavorful. I ordered the Hokkaido scallops which came with delicious asparagus and a white bean stew. We shared a carafe of wine, which was such a nice option. We finished with the tres leches cake which came with a small pot of warm cream! We were pleased with everything, and felt that pricing was appropriate. We will definitely echo others' recommendations and are already making plans to return. read more

For fun presentations I recommend the Seabass and the bananas foster tableside. Issac was a fantastic waiter and gave great service and conversation. Ask about the story of this restaurant. Fresh baked bread and aged balsamic, must try with the garlic and salt. Octopus was great and the liver with the rice chips interesting. Very much enjoyed the venison not gamy at all. I came in not knowing what to expect from this place. A friend of mine came here with a less than favorable experience so my Sis and I were curious to see what all the hubbub was about. Came away quite pleased. Blown away really. This placed reminded me of the Red Door in Korea town. Shame that place does not exist anymore but totally happy this is around. What worries me is that this restaurant is set in an area with mostly pubs and eateries that are quicker paced. This is not meant to be rushed and rather to enjoy each other's company and experience great food. Can it stand on it's own merit? I sure hope it can. Normally I would talk about the food we ate but I hope the customers that do give this place a chance, experiences what we encountered. If you get the chance to speak with the owners, you really get a sense with what they were trying to invoke when creating this restaurant. You can feel the passion and what they were trying to envision. From the locally sourced ingredients or how they try to instill it with their workers. I checked out the restaurant's Saturday tea service. I thought the selection tasty but a bit too carbo heavy for me but that's what these things are generally like. I believe there's always room for improvement in any line of work so I would encourage Bacchus to provide print menus of their tea offerings as well as descriptions of the food being presented. This eliminates the need to constantly question the staff and in large groups would be more efficient. Although not required it would be fantastic to have regular butter on the table. read more

Last summer I went to a Tablas Creek wine dinner at Chez Bacchus and all three of us that attended thought the food was very good, so was eager to go back again. The place is really nice and has an upscale feel, when we walked in at 6:30 it was empty other than a small private party in the back room- which did worry me a little. The server was really friendly and came over with good suggestions to start the meal, so I started to feel more optimistic. We started with the summer melon salad, which was very bright and fresh- it had these little pepper called sweetie peppers, which are my new favorite little pepper for sure. We then moved onto the flaming scallops and pulpo (octopus) . The scallops arrived at the table on fire- which is always fun- but they had peanuts in them and something stringy- I am not sure if it was the peanuts or the combo of hot nuts and seafood, but something about this dish didn't work. The octopus was okay, it was tender- which was good, but the flavor was nothing special. We then had the pork belly which was VERY SALTY and not really pork belly, it was more like a short rib. For dessert we had the peach pavlova, it was impossible to tell that it was peaches- it was overly sweet. It was supposed to be flambéed table side, but the wheel on their cart had broken so they prepared it in the kitchen and brought it to us. I will say that the location is pretty, the service good, they do not rush you, which is great and they have a very nice wine list by the glass, but the food needs some work. I am not sure if the chef has changed since the Tablas Creek wine dinner last summer, but the food wasn't nearly as good as the wine dinner. read more

We gathered today for a special tea with three generations. We left completely in love with Chez Bacchus afternoon tea. The servers were amazing. Everyone one was friendly and accommodating. The menu was a perfect selection of English traditional dishes like Cucumber and Cream cheese and scones and new creations of their own. Everything was prepared with wonderful attention to details.
