After working up an appetite strolling around Hayes Valley, we were in the mood for something fast, filling and delicious. I was pleasantly surprised to find a banh mi spot in the area and we decided on trying the sardine banh mi, the tofu banh mi, and the shrimp spring rolls. I'm used to getting a pork banh mi with pâté, but have been venturing outside of my comfort zone in a quest to eat less red meat. The total was about $28 and the portions were very reasonable. We were stuffed! I liked the extra "punchiness" from the sardines and would get it again. The fried tofu was fairly bland on its own (as expected) so the flavors were primarily from the pickled veggies and jalapeño. The shrimp spring roll was solid - I liked that they went a bit heavier on the veggies and less so on the vermicelli. Service was quick and friendly as well :) read more

9 times out of 10 (i.e. practically all the time) I am craving a DragonEats banh mi, specifically their roasted pork one. They are just so delicious and heavenly, with the crunchy yet soft roll, the refreshing cucumber/cilantro/jalapeños, the juicy and generous portion of roasted pork (with some flavorful fatty pieces too), and most importantly the pate. They are the perfect accompaniment to a day in the park with a beer, or hey, just in your house because it's a global pandemic. I've tried the 5 spices chicken banh mi too but the pork one is better. Usually we try and call ahead and pickup 10ish minutes later but sometimes they're too busy to answer the phone so we just order in person. Never too long a wait. My favorite lunch spot in soma! During lockdown, I've been eating here at least 1-3 times per week. Food: My favorites are the banh mi and seasonal soup. The soup is a hidden gem - it's an broth based soup with some veggies. I also love how they have a variety of meats plus vegetarian options. Delicious, affordably-priced food and above-and-beyond service! Clean, modern style counter order shop. We pre-ordered banh mis and spring rolls for quick lunch pickup last Sunday before going to see a show. We couldn't cross over the streets and get to the shop due to Pride parade congestion and traffic, and we ended up arriving right as they closed. The shop owner was super gracious offering to refund our money, and as we were walking away, came back out and said the kitchen could whip up our order super quick. Thankful they did since the banh mi was the perfect blend of sweet spicy flavorful, and the spring rolls super fresh. Appreciated the pick me up healthy food after a hectic day (good value too!)! I thought this place was pretty solid, and honestly the best place to go for the price! With lunch being less than $10 a person, I'd say this place is great to get food that isn't overpriced in the city. My sister and I came here on a Wednesday right before noon, and there were a few seats open and 2 tables for 2 also free. Several people stop here for a quick bite to eat or order to go and eat elsewhere (everything is packaged in to-go containers anyway). Service is straightforward and friendly. We got: 1) 5 spice chicken banh mi: it was pretty good! We both like the flavor of the chicken, but which the bread was a little softer like the typical french torpedo baguettes usually used (if you're not careful biting into your sandwich, you'll definitely have a cut up mouth/gums) 2) Roasted pork bowl: we actually enjoyed that this bowl had less noodles than the typical Vietnamese place that would have majority of the dish be noodles. Instead, there was a lot of shredded carrots, pickled celery, and other greens. Inside the bowl is a small container of sweetened fish sauce to pour over your bowl. Although it wasn't truly authentic (imo) to what a vermicelli noodle bowl is, it definitely had some of the same flavors and was reminiscent to it. I'd come back. 3) Viet iced coffee: you can't go wrong with this--although I think $4 is a little steep in price. We were in the neighborhood for performing arts and yelp had many stars on this place. Food was OK. Quantity was small for the price. But we need to keep in mind that we are not in Little Saigon. This could be called Fusion; after all, this is Hayes Valley. Rent is high. Ginger chicken soup with kale for $3. It was good, I liked it. Shrimp papaya salad for $6. The shrimp was fresh and cooked perfectly. The sauce could use more kick. Chicken noodle bowl for $6 It was also good but used to getting more. The place is clean and bright. Very good food. The service. The lady in the back with the glasses is rude. Seems like the bowls are becoming very skinny- well she's probably making mine and does this on purpose. I was walking around here, uncertain what to eat and looking for a quick bite to eat that isn't too expensive and just stumbled into this restaurant. Let me say, their roast pork sandwich is legit on point. It's spicy with jalepineo and sweet mayo. Bread is crunchy in the outside but not so tough you can't take a nice big bite, toasted right. The sandwich may appear small at first, but it's heavy in your hand, because they have THICC slides of toast pork. They keep on bits of fat at the slides that make it juicy af. Definitely flavorful and not dry that some banh mi places (ya know that old red meat) What makes this sandwich 5/5 is that they even marinate the carrots so that it's a bit sweet and still crunchy. It's the little details on the sandwich that rounds it out. It's a tiny hidden little place but definitely one of those corner joints you keep coming back again and again. I was extremely disappointed when I realized that there's absolutely nothing for me to eat in this area on my lunch until I found DragonEats! Don't be discouraged by all of the people sitting and waiting inside, I've never waited more than 7 mins for my food ordered at the counter. I stick with the roasted pork fresh bowl (sin cilantro) because it's delicious. The pork is moist, warm, and they give you just enough fish sauce to add into your bowl. I prefer a container or sriracha on mine as well, but you do you. The bahn mi is also great, but it takes more hands to eat that, which I don't have enough of during my working lunches. I'd like to try the 5 spice chicken that everyone raves about, but there are some asian spices I DO NOT like and i'm afraid to ruin a good go-to lunch spot for me, so I may not venture out to try that. It's about $8 for lunch and definitely doable when you don't have a lunch prepared for your work day. I was surprised that a Vietnamese banh mi shop does not have a sandwich with cha lua (Vietnamese pork sausage commonly used in banh mi) -1 star. Even with the disappointment I enjoyed the roasted pork sandwich. It was flavorful. My only complaint was that there was too much mayonnaise in the sandwich. My boyfriend ordered the garlic butter chicken breast sandwich and Vietnamese ice coffee. I tried the ice coffee and it is great.
