Way, way, way over-priced! Warning: do NOT order a custom pizza: it'll cost about $10 more than ordering a regular pizza, even if you take away ingredients. Example: the Sara Lou has pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, spinach, sun dried tomatoes, pecans and ricotta dollops for $25. Ordering those ingredients separately, without the pecans: $35 [Edited to add: a bunch of recent reviews have commented on the rude staff. They're running the place like they want bad reviews. Maybe they're better on a slow week-night, but the resentment about having to make a custom pizza on a Saturday, and their deliberate insufficiency of ingredients, sends a loud message: they don't want your business. Don't worry, Marcelo's, message received, we won't come back!] Very poor cost/benefit ratio (high price and skimpy on the ingredients)! Maybe they're on a crusade to cut our calories? Example: on a medium pizza, I'd expect more than 14 little spinach leaves for an extra $2.20, or 6 teaspoons of ricotta cheese for $2.50, or 8 chunks of pineapple, etc. They don't spread the sauce to the edge of the crust, the cheese ends about 1.5 inches away, and all the ingredients are as sparse as can be. The amount of ingredients would have made a nice 10" personal pizza, but spread out over 14", it's laughable. They use about 1/2 of the ingredients as other pizza shops. Until yesterday, this was our favorite pizza place. After a very active day, we'd drive across town for this treat. I doubt we'll go back. The crust is good, but they're miserly with everything else. I think the quality has definitely gone up recently. Had a craving for pizza and was tired of really nasty frozen ones and a few local eateries. Tried Marcello's again and I really loved it. Ordered the meat lovers and finally my cravings were satiated. The pizza was delicious and not too cheesy, Just the way I like it. It was a slightly on the saltier side for my preference (maybe coz of all the pepporini and sausage) . Will try something else next time! Will definitely order again. read more

Consistently, some of the best pizza in SF. The sauce has a great flavor and the crust is a yummy treat in comparison to other pizzas. This is one of Americas greatest slice shops! Marcello's has been cranking out great slices for decades. I know! and as a disclaimer I tossed Pizzas here in 1982 and 83. They have a new owner and I have no ties whatsoever, but I did have 3 slices this week! I had amazing service across the counter, but the pizza, the pizza was just amazing. I'm a pizza hound here in this town SF, but I had never dropped by this place until today. I never even knew of this pizza joint that's been here since 1978. They had a lot of toppings to choose from. I chose the mushroom with sausage and it was good. They don't take credit though..and that itself deserves the loss of one star. Cash only? Mind you, I haven't told him what I would like. I interrupt him to tell him what I want and I get scolded because he assumed I want x pizza. I tell him what I want and he pounds the order into the machine, makes my order and shoves the pie it into the oven. There is no need for the toxic attitude for a $33 small mediocre pie. This review has to do with the poor customer service and general unfriendliness I have experienced time and time again with the staff at Marcello's. We have been ordering a family size pizza once a week or every other week from Marcello's for the past 6 years (I did the math, it's literally thousands AND thousands of dollars, approx $10,000) and I'm finally done with this place - I have hit my limit for frustrating interactions. For a competitive food city like SF, there are plenty of pizza places to order from who are not complete JERKS. Don't waste your time with this place - unless you want to be in a bad mood all night from having a rude encounter trying to place an order. Thanks for continuous horrible customer service Marchello's we're taking our business and money elsewhere. PS don't expect speedy delivery... I like the pizza here but my last experience here was less than satisfying. I ordered a slice of pepperoni, one of the most basic things you can order. I waited for everyone who had been in front of me to get their orders and then patiently waited for mine. When the next slice of pepperoni came out after everyone in front of me left, I reached for it and the employee told me that it wasn't for me, it was for the woman behind me who ordered AFTER me. Why??? After more waiting, I finally got "my" slice and it was barely room temperature. It was also smaller than every other slice I saw go out and had barely any pepperoni on it. This visit was a 1 star experience, but last week I had a much better experience with an older guy working the counter who served me a proper sized slice nice and hot. Super amazing, thin crust happiness :) I ordered 1/2 Greek( Mozzarella and feta cheese, ripe black olives, and marinated artichoke hearts w/ red sauce) and 1/2 Moizes Panini Pie (Fennel sausage, tomatoes, caramelized onions on our pesto) on regular crust - which is actually on the thin side. Oh Marcello's - how I love thee. I've lived in SF for 9 years now. I've eaten many, many pizza spots in the Bay Area. Nothing has surpassed Marcello's for me. There are a few that come close, but nothing stands out. I'm fairly sure they don't use frozen dough. The pizza bread is great. Nazarios and the other spots on Castro, I'm fairly sure use frozen dough. Also the sauce is perfect. Like addicting perfect. Not sure if they're sprinkling some crack in there, or what, but it's damn good. * tip- I've ordered delivery from here countless times. Every time the order taker says the delivery will be here in 1.5 to 2 hours. - this has never been true. ** They always get here in 30mins or so. I get the strong feeling they really, really, don't like delivering. But if your lazy or just stoned out of your gourd delivery is the way to go! Also- reading some of the recent other reviews. Yes, some of the order takers can be a bit short on the phone. Who. Cares. The pizza is well worth the 40 second of a phone call with some rude, probably hot, pizza dude. read more

A pretty solid NY style slice with a nice body to the dough. It doesn't droop and it's also not too thick. Still, $5 for a slice feels at least $1 too high. I think for a slice shop like this, you should be able to get two slices and a drink for around $10 and here you'd probably be pushing $15 after taxes. read more

Marcello's is a no-nonsense place; sorta an institution in the Castro. You can get a regular or deep dish slice pretty quickly and be out of there in no time. The veggie combo I had today had a decent amount of sauce & cheese as well as yummy spinach, tomato, & a chunk or two of feta. At $4.75 which includes tax, by no means would you say it's cheap. But it was tasty & super convenient for this area. The people watching was great & the staff was super polite. Will be back! read more

Ordered pizza for the first time, but was really disappointed. I heard good things about the place initially, and the pizza did come hot and timely. Unfortunately, the pizza was very oily, burnt on the bottom, and it felt like alI was eating a ball of half melted cheese in every bite.
