I am giving this restaurant two stars not because the food wasn't excellent, the service impeccable, but the noise level was not average. It appears that Nico's would rather caterer to the bar business, then fine dining customers. This is a small restaurant, and having the NBA finals on the TV with screaming customers approximately 6-8 feet away was deafening. I thought I was on a romantic date as Nico's advertises, but instead I was at an extremely expensive sports bar. Not once did any wait staff ever ask the customers at the bar to stop yelling at the TV. Anyone going to this highly expensive restaurant looking for a romantic dinner should go elsewhere. Food is just okay. We were so excited to try the rigatoni with meat sauce and branzino and were underwhelmed. The rigatoni was unimpressive if you've had good italian food. I went to NICO's restaurant with two of my favorite friends Sunday evening. The ambience was great, the food was great the martini was huge, the waiter was worth the 27% we gave him. My husband and I set out for a quite dinner without the kids. We walked in to Nico's feeling a bit under dressed but the hostess assured us that we were dressed perfectly fine even with the cap my husband was wearing. It was the perfect choice for an upscale dinner without the kids. We had: artichoke appetizer rigatoni with meat sauce Filet Mignon Pomegranate martinis Creme brulee The filet was one of the best that I've had in a long time (served with a cabernet demi glace and horeradish cream). The artichoke was perfect as well as the creme brulee. My martini was fresh and on point ( Im a fan of a well built martini). My husband had the rigatoni, which was not amazing but still appetizing, however. We will definitely return for another meal. I'd never been here, but a friend and regular at Nico's told me to come here to drink a great dirty vodka martini. I'm a sucker for them, so I ended up coming. The martini was great, but the service left a lot to be desired. I came alone and was wearing jeans and a black sweater. I sat at the bar at about 6:30pm to get a drink before dinner at a restaurant nearby. When I sat down, the female bartender came up to me. I asked if there was happy hour menu. She said, "Yes. So, are you looking for the cheapest thing we have?" I gave her a look and replied, "No, I just wanted to see the happy hour menu." After a few moments more, she brought over the menu and explained it to me. I didn't find anything I was interested in, so I ordered a dirty martini with Tito's vodka. It was mixed well, but the attitude of the bartender could have been MUCH better. Sure, I was more casual, but the guy across from the bar was wearing a black t-shirt and jeans, and it's Naples, so I assumed a bar in such a beachy area (or, rather, any restaurant with tact) wouldn't show judgment; I was wrong. Nico's never let's me down. It's a must go to if you are around Naples Island. I came here for dinner last week & was greeted promptly by the host with a big smile on her face. We had to wait like 15 minutes for a table downstairs to open up but it was worth the wait! I had the Pork Chop did not disappoint at all I kind of wanted 2nds lol. My gf got the Braised Short Ribs & the meat was so tender it would slide right off the bone. Our server Amy was so nice. She took really good care of us. We had the worst experience at this restaurant we have ever had at a fine dinning place. My husband took me here for our 1st year anniversary dinner. We live in Naples and were looking forward to enjoying one of the local restaurants. We arrived and had a drink at the bar while enjoying some jazz music and relaxing. We noticed the owner was at the bar drinking with some of the patrons and wine tasting. We thought how great, maybe we can come back to do some wine tasting next time. We were seated and ordered some food and a wine bottle. Over the course of the next hour I felt as though I was in the Twilight Zone. The music was changed to house music which was surprising and distracting but we could deal with it. Then the owner was seated right next to us with 2 of his friends and began speaking very loudly and cussing none stop. We really wanted to walk out but thought we would make the best of it and finish our dinner. The food was very mediocre and not memorable. We finished and pay our bill and before we walked out my husband asked me to please wait because he wanted to talk to the owner to let him know about our experience. We had already paid our bill so we weren't expecting anything but we wanted him to be aware. My husband walked up to the table and asked him if he could speak to him in private. He replied "no, whatever you have to say to me you can say right here". So he told him we were celebrating our anniversary and we didn't appreciate his loud cussing rants. At which he said he wanted us to leave, "get out of my restaurant". I have never had this type of experience before or after this. Hands down, the best restaurant in Long Beach. George is an old school restaurateur, and in all the best ways. Everything is made from scratch, and the staff are absolutely fabulous. If it's a martini you crave, you'll not find a better one within 50 miles. Nico's sets the stage for a romantic, intimate dinner with a small bar in the front and plush booths in a back room. I came in with a party of five for a birthday dinner on a Friday night. The service was excellent: our server was attentive the entire evening, and our busser, who I remember the most clearly, was a smiley man who really seemed at ease and happy to be of service to us. Whether it be to pour us more water or to clear our table, his presence was a nice addition to our dinner. Don't be intimidated for the lack of a menu on the restaurant's website. Nico's offers traditional American food such as the rack of lamb, the pecan crusted chilean sea bass, scallops with pesto risotto, salmon fettuccine, tiger prawns with spicy spaghetti, stuffed chicken, filet mignon with pomme puree, and more. They have a good selection for appetizers and salads, such as their strawberry fields salad and their gorgonzola salad which comes with pears and walnuts with a champagne vinaigrette. Might I add that their calamari was lightly battered and a wonderful way to whet one's palate. The food is of great quality and delicious as well. However, it is fairly expensive, at about $30 an entree. I do like Nico's, but it must be reserved only for more special occasions. read more

Had dinner last night for my wife's 40th birthday. The food was great although the dessert was... well, it was pretty bad. We sat upstairs and the ambiance up there is actually a little plain. The energy downstairs (basically around the bar) seemed like a lot of fun. Food: The crab cake for an appetizer was pretty darned good. Fairly large, and it should be for the price ($24), it didn't last long as the wife and I shared it. I found myself wondering how they kept it so moist, almost creamy-like. I had the rigatoni and it was excellent. Others have described it and they were right. The wife had the sea bass with risotto and it was excellent, probably the best risotto we've had in the last couple years. They brought out a free dessert and I'm glad it was free. The triple chocolate cake was dry, dense, and flat out not very good. I was bummed we didn't try the brownie. All in all a very good experience. read more

Came here tonight around 7:30p and the place only had about 2 other tables dining. There is valet in the front for $4. There was a host at the front who was also a waiter, I dont remember his name but he had an afro. He was very friendly. The ambiance of the place is nice, there are booths along the wall and a nice bar. There is also a lounge area upstairs and more seating. I didnt have any libations or appetizers, just lemonade and an entree. The lemonade seemed fresh squeezed, it was good but very tart. For my entree I had the shrimp with linguine and he had the Chilean Sea Bass. The shrimp were large and there were plenty shrimp The meal was very good and I was very pleased. He was pleased with his meal as well. My only complaint about this place is that it is kind of pricey. Our bill was like $85 before the tip and all we had was 2 entrees, a lemonade and a diet coke. So basically it was a $100 meal...when we go out to eat we usually get an appetizer and dessert as well for that price. read more

We reserved the private room in the back of the restaurant, this was done on Thursday of last week. We stopped in yesterday (Saturday) to refresh our memory on the size of the room since it was almost a year ago that we reserved it for our group last Christmas season. I told the hostess we just wanted to check the room and that we had a reservation for Dec. 14, Saturday. She looked at her computer and said that the room was booked by someone else. Sorry. Perhaps they had an overstock of salt that evening, but our food, soups, appetizers, entrees were all overly salty. Perhaps it's due to a lapse in short term memory and the chef had put the salt in 10 times before realizing it. We left the place hungry, because we barely ate any of it. Of course, had I known it was going to be basically a plate of salt with a pinch of food, I would've stayed home and ate salt out of the box. Had dinner at Nico's with another couple on Saturday. It had been recommended to us and we were not disappointed. Food was superb, ample, well presented and very tasty. Our waitress was excellent and knowledgeable. Though a bit pricy it is well worth it when you can eat like that. Place is small and cozy so be sure to reserve. You will not be sorry. The food was great, the service was excellent, but it was brought down by the wine. We ordered a bottle off the menu, they came back with a different bottle and explained that they were out of what we'd requested but the one they had for us was just as good. When I got the bill, it turns out the bottle they brought to substitute was $25 more. That basically killed the experience for me. I never thought a substitution would cost more, although if they'd stated that when bringing the bottle I might have said yes (or I'd have asked for the wine list and made an alternate selection myself). I probably won't go back because of that, and I think it's something to watch out for if you go. read more

I love Nico's! This place was a real find. I noticed one morning a few weeks ago walking by the restaurant that they were open for lunch, so I made it a point to visit for lunch (I live in O.C. but work in Long Beach). There are so many good restaurants in the area where Nico's is located but few great ones. This one is one of the great ones! The owner, George is ever present and quite the host. He sees to it that the food, drink and service are always stellar. I have made Nico's one of my regular destinations for both lunch and dinner since my first visit. I have worked my way through most their menu and have never been disappointed in any way. I find the pricing very fair and the quality first rate. George has a great team of servers and bartenders. I can recommend Nico's without any hesitation. Do yourself and your guests a favor and visit Nico's. I have attached a picture of a filet mignon steak tartare I had just the other night. My husband and I were in town for an event and had forgotten to make any dinner reservations anywhere. We happened to drive by Nico's and decided to stop and check in with the hostess. The hostess took one look at us and told us to follow her to the upper level dinning area stating that we looked like we wanted a romantic dinner. Shortly after being seated our waiter introduced himself (I'm sorry ...I forgot the name!!!!) and proceeded to provide us with spectacular service throughout our whole dinner. We had brought a wine from a little known winery (RN Estate Vineyard/Paso Robles) and the waiter transformed into a Sommelier impressing us with his knowledge of the wine we brought. Overall my experience was amazing. The food was perfectly cooked. I got a steak that was cooked medium rare with an amazing sauce on top. The sauce is what made the steak. I also had a creme brûlée that was to die for. The server recommended each of these dishes. I think her name was Taylor and her service was spectacular. She was always offering her service every time she walked by. She was very nice and kind and easy to talk to about the food. Her service would make me come back over and over. Made a reservation a week ago and was really looking forward to trying Nico's. The food did not disappoint and was worth the 45 minute trip to get to the restaurant. The service- not so much. Inattentive, poorly trained, poorly timed, and uninformed about food in general, the menu, timing a 3 course meal, and how to serve wine. Bussers were useless. Waiter was a nice person but overall a disaster. The staff in the kitchen deserve 4.5 stars but the serving staff deserve the truth- they are clearly not professionals. If I were cooking at Nico's I would be in a murderous rage that my hard work was being served by this lousy crew. read more

This place is too loud, because the bar is in the middle of the room and is very popular with locals. Not really the place for a romantic dinner. If you are going to charge $40-$50 per entree you should at least make sure that your customers can enjoy their dinner in a pleasant environment. I don't like super quiet restaurants, but in this case the noise was painful. Sadly, the food was not that enjoyable either. The portions are huge, but all the dishes are really heavy. We had two seafood dishes (lobster and seabass) and both were overcooked and did not taste good. The gnocchi appetizer had a delicious mushroom sauce, but the gnocchi were fried and overdone. Overall, very disappointing. There are better restaurants on that same block. read more
