We came to Roe on a recommendation by the amazing staff at the Westin Longbeach. We were here visiting from Boston and wanted to eat some really good seafood. What can I say? Unassuming, down to earth boho cool. Simple, really fresh food cooked to perfection. We had the sea bass and arugula salad with candied pecans and goat cheese, and it was oh-so good. The fish was perfectly cooked with a delciate sauce to compliment it.Our waiter Chase was knowledgable, easy going and was very helpful in picking our dinner selection. John the manager came to our table to make sure we were taken care of and also gave us a brief hisory of the art in the restaurant. I used to love this place. They changed their menu maybe their chef too because the food as good as it was. The cocktails were also not the same. The service was also pretty bad. Very slow and not friendly as in the past. Very disappointing. Sadly I don't think I will return and I used to go at least 3 times a month. It's been a few months since I have been and so much change not for the better unfortunately. I ordered a 13.00 dessert to go, I would have thought the dessert like most restaurants would have it packaged in a nice container as well considering the price. did not think i would like this place that much but glad we did. it was easy to get reservations on a sunday last minute. It's great for seafood and kids! They even had crayons for the kids to play with. The crayons didnt last long but it still a distraction!!! They also had a live band around 1PM and my daughter just loved listening to them! We got sushi rolls and they were just ok. So i would probably stick to the seafood/american dishes. We got poke and it was just drenched in their mayo, eeel sauce, etc... but still good flavors for the poke! They have such a good mimosa flight deal for $20. it's a whole bottle with a variety of different juices! The bloody mary is $10 and supposed to come with a crab claw but they didnt have it. This place hits on all cylinders if you young folk know what I mean ? It's got the best fish tacos, hands down anywhere...at least speaking for the blackened Mahi-mahi tacos on corn tortillas. I had flashbacks from the famously talked about 1980''s Baja Mexico fish tacos. They don't need anything but a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime and a fresh drink ! I would consider Roe a good option for dinner in this popular area of Long Beach. The advantages: - The space is pretty cute. The interior is decked with string lights and has live trees growing inside. - There is outdoor seating available both in the front as well as a back patio. - The food is good! I recommend sharing so you can try a couple of things. We enjoyed: The calamari (pretty standard but tasty), the ceviche (not fishy and easy to share), the pasta (fresh ingredients and well prepared), and the sea bass (good flavor combination with devious sides) The cons: - Parking can be very difficult here - The menu is on the pricey side - The service is just okay, we were seated very slowly although we were on time for a reservation and were a bit rushed with ordering etc - Unfortunately they are not allowing dogs on the back patio even though it is outside read more

Gillian, you continue to miss the point as your staff did that evening. None of this had anything to do with the fee let's be clear. What we did is inquire about the misunderstanding. Also I never told you I expected a discount, now you are flat out lying. After john came to our table screaming at us i said there were multiple ways he could have handled it and one was to offer to take one of the multiple 5 dollar cake fees off the tab. Unlike a corkage feee Gillian, that is a set fee, your restaurant charged 5 dollars per person which amounted to almost 50 dollars. Ridiculous. Made a reservation for 8 on Yelp and were seated promptly when we got there. They have a beautiful outdoor seating area in the back. Server was attentive and friendly. The fish and chips and fish burger were the biggest hit in our group, followed by the crustacean omelet. The Roe sauce went really well with the fish and chips. We will be back! read more

was so excited to try this place. long story short, the bill was not worth the experience. amazing seafood but the attention to detail and customer experience was lacking. sat at the bar and ordered 4 drinks, 5 appetizers. bill was nearing $300, not including tip. multiple bartenders waited on us, so no personalized service or customization to our dining experience at all. someone from marketing was taking taking photos for their instagram and we clearly felt in the way. their decorating and photo shoot was distracting. the bar top was 40% full when we arrived, by the time the time we got our drinks, the bar top had cleared completely. we felt like we were a hindrance, only mentioning this for the price we paid - a $300 appetizer and drink bar occasion should include some sort of worthiness by staff. staff was nice though, not rude but did not include any sort of checking in on our status or opinion, needs. the portions were small, more like aperitifs rather than appetizers. great food, and taste. never again for the price though. read more

Always loved Roe, always will. Everything I order has always been super fresh, staff is always so sweet and the drinks are pretty solid. Based on the various gushing Yelp reviews, I really wanted to like this place. I had lunch here with a client set for 12:00 noon. When I walked in, the place was nearly empty, which, at least in my experience, proved to be a red flag. Most of the places I've been to on 2nd street are humming at lunch time. I ordered the Chilled Soba Noodles & Seared Yellowfin Tuna, and our server told me, "great choice!" It was far from a "great choice." The seared Yellowfin (also known as Albacore) Tuna was one of the worst pieces of fish I've ever been served. I good portion of it as so fatty and full of gristle, if that's the right word, that it could not be cut with a table knife. Also, I expected the noodles to be chilled, but I did not expect the Tuna to be chilled/cold. In addition, the dish seemed to me to be greatly over-spiced and over-sauced. The cook must have known what he or she plated. I finished roughly half of it to be polite but declined the server's offer to box the remainder; that plate wasn't going to be any better a second go-round. As others have mentioned, the flies inside the restaurant were an annoyance. Who wants to swat flies when one is trying to eat and converse? I never complain about food or service when I'm dining with a client, unless the client speaks up, but I won't bring a client here again. read more

I've always wanted to come here and tonight that time happened. I must say my desire to eat hear and the boiled up anticipation, did not disappoint. Everything was amazing. I sat in the back patio enjoying a nice glass of Le Crema Chard while perusing the menu. First, 1/2 dozen Baja Oysters. Yum! A delicious spicy salsa/horseradish cocktail sauce added the perfect amount of spice. Second, a cup (which was more like a bowl) of clam chowder. So many huge chunks of perfectly cooked clams made the soup perfect. They do not skimp!! Lastly, a delicious salad of baby greens, creamy anchovy dressing, polenta croutons and shredded parmigiana. Cute place but the food needs some work. Don't get the steak...they don't seem to know how to cook one worth their life...it was comped and even at the 3rd try, it came wrong. Anyways, so get their cocktails (what I came for). I enjoyed the tobacco one and the whisky sour. Note to the bar: Do keep your garnishes stocked. For example, your lavender cocktail looks like an AMF with a lemon slice...those are 2 very different drinks and at our age...dont want to be caught with an amf at hand...especially at this price. Ok..on with the review.. Do get their seafood tower...we got the small and it was nicely presented, however a few pcs of shell was inside the oysters. Good thing I'm a pro- oyster eater. Haha Most of the items on the tower were a little on the salty side so be aware. Take some sauce off. Do also get their seafood soup inside the bread bowl. Best thing on the menu! Do get the checkin offer- ceviche! Came on a friday night. Had resos but i think you can grab a spot as long as you're there by 7. Even from the outside Roe looks enticing, with its patio and large, bright sign. I was taken here for a birthday dinner and had a fantastic experience. The inside is gorgeous. It is open and contemporary with lots of wood, hanging lights, and even real trees growing through the floor. Service is professional but felt a little rigid where a bit more of a friendly approach would have felt warmer. Nonetheless, we were served well and never in want of anything. We started with the Ceviche, free with Yelp check-in. It was fresh and beautifully presented on a piece of lettuce with light tomatoes mixed in. I liked that it wasn't overpowered by them, and chips are served on the side. The menu has a large selection and a lot of it centers on a raw fish preparation. I need to return to try more but this time I went with the Sea Bass. It was perfectly cooked even down to the crunchy skin which I also ate. The fish is served atop a puree along with peas, beautiful mushrooms, and crisp bacon crumbles. I cleaned my plate! Everything at Roe from the decor to the presentation and taste of the food is top notch. Prices are on the high side but I felt that the quality warranted the price. Tons of compliments from our guests that "not one or two but ALL the dishes were epic", "the servers were helpful & good-humored", and "how did you find this gem?" & so forth... Special compliments to Gillian who pretty much planned the party (40+ guests) & is super detail-oriented & organized. Had such a lovely lunch at Roe. The atmosphere was so unique and beautiful with the live trees inside the building. They have an outside street seating, all open inside area, then out back is another seating area. I ordered the Mai Mai grilled tacos. It was very tasty. The fresh blue corn tortillas were soft and fresh. The fish was fresh and yummy. The slaw with the sauce was a nice surprise in my mouth.The homemade sauce for the chips had a hit of spice which along with the fresh tortilla chips were crispy and delicious. It was hot day and to have yummy fish tacos hit the spot. The menu has a great variety and the prices were good. The customer service was just lovely. Christopher was our server and very attentive. When I first opened the menu I am like wait this place has buttermilk biscuits, sushi rolls AND sea food? Yes, they can do it all and they do it well. When walking into the restaurant I was first struck by the decor. They have these beautiful trees in the restaurant which were adorned with ornaments and lights which created a great ambiance. Our table was seated under one of these trees and overlooking the patio. After we sat down, we immediately ordered the complimentary rockfish ceviche yelp offer. It was simple but what made crazy good was how fresh the ingredients were. We came just in time for happy hour so we enjoyed the crunchy shrimp roll, biscuits with maple butter, a dozen oysters, and pop corn chicken. Everything was so flavorful and made my tastebuds very happy. For my entree, I tried the Mexican Shrimp with polenta. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. Don't get me started on the polenta. That was the creamiest, perfectly cooked, delicious polenta I have ever had. We didn't have room for dessert but those sounded amazing as well. I give this place 5 stars for overall consistency, service and value. The cuisine isn't groundbreaking but it's very good, and considering what you can get charged for this sort of meal in the LA area it's a great deal. Seafood is always fresh- they have a little seafood market right next door. Cocktails are really nice. Servers are excellent. Eat out front if you like the street, or in the airy, open main room, or the spacious backyard. Even the salads are slammin.
