I had never been there and the chicken fried steak breakfast looked good but I just didn't want the gravy and I wanted to try the chicken fried steak sandwich. Unfortunately it was a lot of breading and not a lot of meat it was more crunchy and not meaty! I was disappointed in that! I asked if the onion rings were homemade they are! But they were just very thick batter not much onions! Definitely would not order either one of those again! My friend got corned beef hash unfortunately it was mostly potato very very little corned beef it was little pieces kind of shredded and just didn't look honestly very appetizing. The other friend got the Monte Cristo sandwich and that looking incredible in fact I got a bite of it and it was really really good. That I would order again with a side of house potatoes like breakfast potatoes instead of french fries those were really good house potatoes seasoned well cooked well. Food and service are impeccable! My husband and I have been coming here for years now and we have always had consistent delicious food and friendly service. We love to bring our dog and sit on the relaxing patio, as they are always accommodating to the pups and give them little water bowls to enjoy. My track record shows I don't like to give 3 stars or less, especially for small businesses, but I am a bit surprised The Crooked Duck has 4. Been here a few times now during brunch and can't really say I'm impressed. Though they claim to bring innovative and sophisticated dishes, I don't see much evidence of it on their menu, photos, or the meals I've had. I looked over and over at the breakfast menu to find something different and new, but it was pretty standard (i.e., boring). Previously, I tried their avocado toast ($10), which was very similar to how I make it on thin, wheat bread; plain and basic, though micro greens make it presentable. I was taken aback to see their rendition of Huevos Rancheros ($13) with tortilla chips completely covered with a layer of tomato-paste-like salsa and cheese. It was still edible, and I was hungry, so I ate it and don't like to waste food. Today, I went for the Crooked Duck omelette ($14), which included their duck chili, breakfast potatoes and upgraded biscuits and gravy for $1.50. I'm pretty sure the meat was beef. It tasted, looked, and smelled like short rib-beef. I just had rabbit the other day too, so the texture and flavor of it was fresh in my memory. The oil used to sauté the potatoes was stale as well. The gravy and biscuits were average. He felt safe getting the Greek omelette ($13), which was okay, but on the salty side with the generous amounts of kalamata olives. The price point is great! But also reflects the quality and execution of the dishes. The service has generally been good. Today, we encountered what I think was a blip, and was remedied, so I won't get into the details. Regardless, it's the lackluster menu and dishes that are steering me away next time I'm in the area. read more

One star so I can at least post. I wish I had a good review to leave. Rang the buzzer, two employees passed by and said we'd be seated in a bit. 18 minutes later, we decided to leave. Why? There were not too many diners so plenty of available seating, we were the only ones in line, and what happened to getting "seated in a bit" at 1pm on a Thursday. Hellooo? I've been coming here with my wife for a few years now. The food here is so good! I usually get either their delicious buttery waffle, unlike any I've ever had, or their BLT which is simple but always on point! Today I had one of their specials: chile verde omelet. Wow was it good! The service is always top notch! We've brought our dog here before as it's very dog friendly, but sometimes we come out and sit at the bar when our dog doesn't feel social and love to talk to the friendly staff. Toni and Wil are really friendly, among other servers! Recommend to all for for some delicious brunch! Food is good enough but pricey for the portions. Staff is very friendly If you sit at the bar, you can watch the owner treat his staff with disrespect and be extremely rude to them. Watched him berat a waitress cause she punched a stapler too hard and could have broken it. (She did nothing wrong) We used to sit at the bar intentionally for his entertainment. Lots of options and variety, and there's mimosas and other mixed drinks as well to round out a solid meal. It is a little on the small side, so when my friends and I came on a Saturday, there was a 45 minute wait for a table. It was expected, but it didn't feel as long with how many tables were in front of us. They offered outdoor patio, inside and parking lot seating options, which was very plentiful given COVID social distancing. We chose to sit at a tented parking lot table. Service was professional and quick. Our server got us started with drinks right away, and made sure that our orders were taken within 5 minutes of being seated. Throughout brunch, she kept checking back to make sure we had waters refilled and all the condiments we could possibly ask for! The food was pretty great. We all got something off their brunch menu, and of course couldn't say no to the mimosa and mixed drinks to go along for a fun time. Very hefty portions and taste for the prices! I got the Joe's Italian Sausage Scramble with potatoes, and subbed toast for biscuits & gravy. All my friends got either a omelet or two egg breakfast as well. For my food, it was heavy, spicy and flavorful goodness all on one plate. The portions definitely filled me up; the creamy and savory biscuits and gravy were just perfect. All in all, this was a great outdoor dining experience especially during COVID. Food was delicious. I got the breakfast Burger, side of fruit and a hibiscus (cranberry) mimosa. Burger to bun ratio was perfect. They even had a sliced pickle on the side. Burger also comes with some nice crispy bacon. My side of fruit did not have any "bad" or not ripe fruit. This is a major plus (most places will give you anything). This was my first time coming here but from what I seen the wait is always 10-20 mins for brunch. It is definitely worth it tho. Heads up the place is kinda small so that adds to the wait time. Customer service depends on the server it seems. I sat at the bar and it took at least 5 mins (3 servers) for the 3rd to ask me if someone came to take my order yet. There is only street parking. I was lucky to finding parking nearby as it was a weekday and we came around 8:30am. Seated right away and was helped immediately as I definitely needed coffee. They had iced coffee which was good and Im a coffee snob. I had the 3x3x3 which was just perfect. I swapped the flapjacks for waffle and I loved it. The waffle was fluffy and crispy at the same time. I hadn't been to The Crooked Duck in years, but my boyfriend and I decided to stop in the other weekend for a quick lunch after running some errands. We both ordered a hibiscus mimosa and were surprised how generous the pours are for the price! They were delicious. We also split a clam chowder (they only serve this on Fri/Sat I believe), which exceeded our expectations. It was so creamy and I think we tasted a hint of bacon. Delicious. For our mains, I ordered a tuna salad sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries and he ordered fish tacos. The tuna salad sandwich was nothing special, but I kinda liked it that way because I'm not a big lunch person so it didn't feel overly filling or unhealthy. My wife and I stopped in here while our daughter was visiting Long Beach State and it ended up being a really nice little restaurant with really good food and service. Even though we were from out of town, my wife was certain that she recognized the server who was just super smiley and friendly. It finally came to us that she had been the super smiley and friendly waitress from an old San Diego restaurant that we often went to called the Eggery. They serve beer and wine, and beer-based cocktails. Prices are reasonable, portions are large. They have ample indoor and outdoor seating. On a Saturday morning, the wait for a table was only about 10 minutes. Our waitress was genuinely friendly, and knowledgeable of the menu. I was excited to learn that they have an espresso machine, but somehow my Americano tasted like slightly burnt gas station coffee. I recommend the Cinnamon Banana French Toast. They make it with an egg bread that is sturdy enough not to get soggy, but porous enough to absorb all the flavors of the cinnamon egg wash. I wished the bananas were more caramelized, but it was still a good dish overall. My husband's Western Omelette was just okay. Overall, 6/10. read more

Used to love this place. Heartbreaking Man at the counter today was unbelievably rude. He was hiding inside and then begrudgingly came out to host today (1/7). He needs to be kinder to the guests who have been coming here for years. I've never seen him before and I've been an amazing customer for many years so it's disheartening to be met with this type of hostile treatment at a formerly nice and welcoming spot. It was freezing out and he told us to wait outside when there was no server or host helping us for 10+ minutes. It's horrible to stand there. He was patronizing and unkind. "Press a button" on an abandoned host stand on a curb isn't welcoming. It's some cruel, post-COVID nonsense. The only reason there's a button outside at the host stand far away from all the people and the warm restaurant is because...the *staff* doesn't want to stand there either. Remember when restaurants used to welcome you in? With a foyer, literally intended to be warm and inviting to guests? Well, this is the exact opposite of that. Stand outside shivering in the cold and wait ten minutes until someone who's warm and inside notices you. It's freezing out today, and they had only availability on an unheated patio. No warm textures, no inviting heaters. I won't be spending my money shivering on a balcony. At the end of the day, no food will outweigh being treated without kindness and respect, very poorly, and asked to go outside like a dog. Not coming back. My advice (as someone whose family runs a successful 60 year old restaurant): Make a welcoming host stand and be nice to your guests. Welcome them in, like they're dining at a restaurant, and don't force them outside in the cold when your own staff doesn't even want to stand there. It's not working. read more
